Particle production in proton-induced reactions at 14.6 GeV/c on Be, Al, Cu, and Au targets has been systematically studied using the E-802 spectrometer at the BNL-Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. Particles are measured in the angular range from 5° to 58° and identified up to momenta of 5, 3.5, and 8 GeV/c for pions, kaons, and protons, respectively. Mechanisms for particle production are discussed in comparison with heavy-ion-induced reactions at the same incident energy per nucleon.

Backward emitted protons with momentump>0.3 GeV/c in interactions of neutrino in the energy range 10–200 GeV with photoemulsion nuclei were investigated. Energy spectrum slope parameter of backward protons was measured to beT0=48.9±7.9 MeV. TheA-dependence power index of relative mean yield of backward protons was found to bea=0.68±0.12. A drop in the mean yield of backward protons at the four momentum squared over ∼15 (GeV/c)2 (the neutrino energy over ∼50 GeV) was observed.

Inclusive production ofK0 andK* (892)0 mesons inK+A-interactions (A=Be, Cu, Pb) at the energy 11.2 GeV has been investigated to study hadronisation of the leading\(\bar s\)-quark; the results are presented. Double differential cross sections d2σ/dxfdpt2 were measured in the region of incident particle fragmentation (0.4≦xf≦1,pt≦0.5 GeV/c). The experimental data obtained were analysed on the basis of the Lund model FRITIOF and a quark-gluon model that takes into account colour screening and hadron formation length effects. The experimental data confirm the picture of hadronisation of the leading\(\bar s\)-quark developed in the latter model.

Using the CELLO detector, we have measured cross sections for the processγγ→π+π− in the mass range 0.75–1.9 GeV/c2. A partial wave fit to the data indicates the presence of a sizeableS-wave amplitude with signs of resonant behaviour. Values for the γγ width of thef2(1270) are given, showing the model-dependence of this quantity. At higher dipion masses, the model of Brodsky and Lepage is found to give an order of magnitude description of the data.

Distributions of event shape variables obtained from 120600 hadronicZ decays measured with the DELPHI detector are compared to the predictions of QCD based event generators. Values of the strong coupling constant αs are derived as a function of the renormalization scale from a quantitative analysis of eight hadronic distributions. The final result, αs(MZ), is based on second order perturbation theory and uses two hadronization corrections, one computed with a parton shower model and the other with a QCD matrix element model.

Meson production in proton, oxygen and sulphur interactions with uranium targets at 200 GeV/nucleon is studied. We measure the inclusive meson cross-section d σ/dPT2 and its evolution fromp+U to S+U. The cross-section fitted with an exponential gives an inverse slopePT0 of the order of 210 MeV/c. As a function of the neutral transverse energy,PT0 values show a slight rise followed by a plateau. The normalized difference (σ+−σ−)/σ− between positive and negative meson cross-sections is found to increase withET.

Measurements are reported of inclusive production of η-mesons in the beam fragmentation region in γp, πp andKp collisions. Results include a small but significant departure from VMD, and a pronounced rise in theη/π0 ratio with increasingpT.

Differential cross sections for the neutral pion production reaction C12(p,π0)13Ng.s. have been measured at 153.5, 166.1, 186.0, and 204.0 MeV bombarding energy using recoil detection. The shape of the angular distribution agrees well with that of the mirror reaction C12(p,π+)13Cg.s.. Isospin invariance predicts for the ratio of the cross sections σ(p,π+)/σ(p,π0)=2. At 153.5, 166.1, and 186.0, MeV, where (p,π+) cross sections have been reported previously by other groups at the same reduced pion momentum η=pπ/mπc=0.34,0.55,0.78, the ratio of the total cross sections is 2.02±0.14, 3.14±0.12, and 2.12±0.16, respectively. The (p,π0) cross sections at 166 MeV is therefore 1.57±0.06 times larger than expected. For Tp<160 MeV, the experimental cross sections are larger than predicted by a phase space and Coulomb barrier penetration calculation that fits the higher-energy data. Differential cross sections were also obtained for the C12(p,π−)13O reaction, and upper limits set for differential cross sections for radiative capture to the ground state of N13.

Inclusive inelastic scattering spectra from C, Ca, Sn, and Pb were measured for 100-MeV pions at a number of angles. The observed ratios of the π− and π+ total inelastic cross sections for the different targets are explained in terms of a simple model which is based on the assumption that the scattered pion has interacted with only one nucleon. This model also accounts for the ratio between normal and charge-exchange scattering cross sections at 100 MeV.

Data collected in the experiment R704 at the CERN ISR are used to study the annihilation process p p → π 0 π 0 at several centre-of-mass energies between 2.97 and 3.56 GeV. A total sample of 7359 events has been identified, from which cross sections and angular distributions in the interval 0 < | cos θ ∗ | < 0.5 have been measured.
