Multihadronic e+e− annihilation events at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV have been studied with both the original (PEP 5) Mark II and the upgraded Mark II detectors. Detector-corrected distributions from global shape analyses such as aplanarity, Q2-Q1, sphericity, thrust, minor value, oblateness, and jet masses, and inclusive charged-particle distributions including x, rapidity, p⊥, and particle flow are presented. These distributions are compared with predictions from various multihadron event models which use leading-logarithmic shower evolution or QCD matrix elements at the parton level and string or cluster fragmentation for hadronization. The new generation of parton-shower models gives, on the average, a better description of the data than the previous parton-shower models. The energy behavior of these models is compared to existing e+e− data. The predictions of the models at a center-of-mass energy of 93 GeV, roughly the expected mass of the Z0, are also presented.

Observation of the Decay $B \to$ F X

We present evidence for inclusive F-meson production in B-meson decay. The product branching fraction B(B→FX)B(F+→φπ+) is measured to be 0.0038±0.010. The F momentum spectrum indicates the presence of a large component of two-body final states in the decay B→FX.

We have measured the inclusive branching ratio for B→φX to be 0.023±0.006±0.005. The momentum distribution of the φ mesons is compared with that expected from the cascade decays B→F→φ and B→D→φ. .AE

Comparison of Light Quark and Charm Quark Fragmentation

Separate samples of charm quark and light quark (u, d, s) jets have been isolated in an experiment studying e + e − annihilations at s = 29 GeV . The results come from data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 111 pb −1 collected by the High Resolution Spectrometer. Differences were observed in charged multiplicities, momentum distributions, and rapidity of the size expected from the different fragmentation functions and leading particle decay properties of the two samples.

Light ion collisions with carbon target at 4.2 GeV/c/N are studied. Pion multiplicity distributions, momentum and angular spectra are analysed. These data are described in terms of models assuming independent interactions of nucleons from the projectile nucleus with the target.

Two-particle small-angle correlations between negative pions and between protons in carbon-carbon collisions atP=4.2 GeV/c per nucleon have been studied, both for an unbiased sample and for “central” events. A comparison of experimental π− π− andpp correlation functions with theoretical predictions has been made. A possible evidence for the existence of two fireballs in C+C interactions atP=4.2 GeV/c per nucleon is presented.

Exclusive Production of Hadron Pairs at Large Momentum Transfer in Photon-photon Interactions

Phys.Lett.B 137 (1984) 267-271, 1984.
Inspire Record 194772 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.30576

We report on the exclusive production of π, K and proton pairs from photon-photon interactions at momentum transfers | t |⩾1 GeV 2 . Using the PLUTO detector at the e + e − storage ring PETRA, we have observed 15 events in an integrated luminosity of 41.7 pb −1 . The data lie far below the expectations for point-like hadrons, and are in reasonable agreement with the QCD-based predictions of Brodsky and Lepage.

THIS METHOD OF ANALYSIS OF THE OBSERVED RATIO OF HADRON TO MUON PAIRS, IS TIED TO THE SPECIFIC DETECTOR ACCEPTANCE, BUT HAS THE ADVANTAGE OF BEING VIRTUALLY INDEPENDENT OF THE HADRON MASSES.

SEE COMMENT IN PREVIOUS TABLE.

THIS METHOD OF ANALYSIS OF THE CROSS SECTION AT 90 DEG IN THE CM AS A FUNCTION OF PCM IS MORE EASILY COMPARED WITH THEORETICAL PREDICTIONS BUT MORE DEPENDENT ON THE SPECIFIC HADRON MASSES.

Fragmentation of Heavy Quarks Produced in $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation

Inspire Record 189417 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.20548

Identification of muons in hadronic events from e+e− annihilation observed in the MAC detector at the storage ring PEP provides flavor tagging of heavy primary quarks. A sample enriched in events from bb¯ production is obtained and the b-quark fragmentation function is inferred from the momentum spectrum of the muons. The b quark is found to fragment predominantly with high values of z, with 〈zb〉=0.8±0.1, and to have an over-all semimuonic branching fraction of (15.5−2.9+5.4)%.
