Compton scattering from the free and bound proton at backward angles above pi threshold.

Differential cross sections for Compton scattering from the free proton at Θ γ ′ lab =130.7° in the energy region from 200 MeV to 410 MeV and for quasi-free Compton scattering from the proton bound in the deuteron at Θ γ ′ lab =148.8° in the energy region from 200 MeV to 290 MeV have been measured. The free proton data are in agreement with dispersion-theory predictions based on standard parameters. The difference of the proton polarizabilities has been extracted from the quasi-free data. Our result, α ̄ − β ̄ =[9.1±1.7( stat+syst )±1.2( mod )]×10 −4 fm 3 , is in reasonable agreement with the world average of the free proton data if the backward spin polarizability γ π is taken to be −37.6×10 −4 fm 4 as predicted by dispersion theory in agreement with many theoretical calculations. This implies that quasi-free Compton scattering may also be used to determine the electromagnetic polarizabilities of the neutron. No indication has been found of a recently suggested new contribution to γ π .

Measurement of the e+ e- --> gamma gamma (gamma) cross section at the LEP energies.

The total and the differential cross-sections for the reaction e + e − → γγ ( γ ) have been measured with the DELPHI detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies from 130 to 183 GeV for an integrated luminosity of 78.19 pb −1 . The results agree with the QED predictions. The lower limits (obtained including previously published results at the Z 0 energies) on the QED cutoff parameters are Λ + >253 GeV and Λ − >225 GeV and the lower bound on the mass of an excited electron with an effective coupling constant λ γ =1 is 231 GeV/ c 2 . All the limits are at the 95% confidence level.

Measurement of gamma p --> K+ Lambda and gamma p --> K+ Sigma0 at photon energies up to 2-GeV .

Associated strangeness production in the reactions γp → K + Λ and γp → K + Σ 0 was measured with the SAPHIR detector at the electron stretcher ring ELSA at Bonn. Data on total and differential cross sections and on hyperon polarizations are presented. The total cross section for Λ production shows a strong threshold enhancement whereas the Σ 0 data have a maximum at about E γ =1.45 GeV. Along with the angular decomposition of the differential cross section into polynomials, this suggests resonance production. However, the angular distributions of both hyperon polarizations vary only slightly with the photon energy. Λ and Σ 0 polarizations show opposite signs and change sign over the angular range.

Measurement of the exclusive D (p, e+ e-) He-3 and D (p, gamma) He-3 reactions at 98 and 176 MeV

A high resolution magnetic pair spectrometer for medium energy photons has been used for studies of the exclusive ( p , e + e − ) and ( p , γ) reactions on deuterium at 98 and 176 MeV. The ( p , e + e − ) cross sections, obtained at 40° and 80°, are compared with the corresponding data for the ( p , γ) reaction measured with the same apparatus. At small virtual photon masses the ( p , e + e − ) cross sections show significant enhancement over what is expected from model calculations, a behaviour which has earlier been observed also for the 11 B( p , e + e − ) 12 C reaction.

Longitudinal and transverse cross sections in the H-1(e,e' K+)Lambda reaction.

The 1H(e,e′K+)Λ reaction was studied as a function of the squared four-momentum transfer, Q2, and the virtual photon polarization, ɛ. For each of four Q2 settings, 0.52, 0.75, 1.00, and 2.00 (GeV/c)2, the longitudinal and transverse virtual photon cross sections were extracted in measurements at three virtual photon polarizations. The Q2 dependence of the σL/σT ratio differs significantly from current theoretical predictions. This, combined with the precision of the measurement, implies a need for revision of existing calculations.

Subthrehold K+ production in deuteron and alpha induced nuclear reactions.

Double differential cross sections have been measured for pi+ and K+ emitted around midraidity in d+A and He+A collisions at a beam kinetic energy of 1.15 GeV/nucleon. The total pi+ yield increases by a factor of about 2 when using an alpha projectile instead of a deuteron whereas the K+ yield increases by a factor of about 4. According to transport calculations, the K+ enhancement depends both on the number of hadron-hadron collisions and on the energy available in those collisions: their center-of-mass energy increases with increasing number of projectile nucleons.

Destructive interference of s and p waves in 180-degrees pi- p elastic scattering.

The differential cross section for π − p elastic scattering shows a pronounced dip at 180° and incident pion laboratory energies around 57 MeV. This is due to the cancellation of the real parts of the s - and p -wave hadronic scattering amplitudes. The first observation of this dip is reported and the potential of exploiting the destructive interference phenomenon is discussed.

Evidence for narrow baryons in inelastic p p scattering.

The reaction pp→pπ+N has been studied at three energies ( Tp=1520, 1805, and 2100 MeV) and six angles from 0° up to 17° (laboratory). Several narrow states have been observed in missing mass spectra at 1004, 1044, and 1094 MeV. Their widths are typically 1 order of magnitude smaller than the widths of N* or Δ. Possible biases are discussed. These masses are in good agreement with those calculated within a simple phenomenological mass formula based on color magnetic interaction between two colored quark clusters.

Observation of eta-prime and Phi meson production very close to threshold in the p d ---> He-3 X reaction

The production of η′ (958) and φ (1020) mesons has been studied very close to threshold in the inclusive p d → 3 He X reaction. The complicated phase space acceptance problem caused by rapidly changing kinematics close to threshold has been carefully treated. The measured averaged squared amplitudes | f | 2 at threshold are 0.9 and 2.4 nb/sr for the η′ and φ meso Our results are in remarkable agreement with predictions of a two-step model, which uses existing π − p → n X data as input. However the ratio of φ to ω production seems at variance with naïve expectations based on the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka rule.

Observation of multiple hard photon final states at s**(1/2) = 130-GeV to 140-GeV at LEP.

We have studied the process e+e → nγ (n ≥ 2) at an average center-of-mass energy of 133 GeV using the L3 detector at LEP. For an integrated luminosity of 4.95 pb−1 we find one γγγγ(γ) final state with only hard photons. The rates of both γγγ and γγ events are consistent with QED expectations. The cross section of the reaction e+e → γγ(γ) in the polar range 16° < θγ < 164° is measured to be 22.6 ± 2.2 pb. Decays into photons of narrow scalar resonances with masses between 90 and 130 GeV are not observed. The observation of the event with four energetic photons is consistent with QED although the kinematic configuration of the photons is atypical.
