We have observed the decay h0(2040)→p¯p in the reaction π+n→p¯pp at 10 GeV/c detected in the large-aperture solenoid spectrometer at SLAC. We have measured the product of the cross section and branching ratio, σ(π+n→h0(2040)p)B(h0(2040)→p¯p), to be 0.84±0.17 μb. The moments of the angular distribution are consistent with the quantum numbers of the h0 meson being JPC=4++ and IG=0+.

First results on the measurement of the elastic and total cross section at the CERN pp̄ Collider are presented. Combining the measurement of elastic scattering at low momentum transfer with the rate of inelastic interactions, a value of the total cross section of 66 mb with a 10% statistical error was obtained.

Evidence for a New $K^* \bar{K}$ State at a Mass of 1530-{MeV} With Ij (Pc) = 1++ Observed in $K^- p$ Interactions at 4.2-{GeV}/$c$

Evidence is presented for a newK*\(\bar K\)+c.c. resonance with a mass of (1,526±6) MeV, a width of (107±15) MeV and quantum numbersIJPC=01++. We call itD′ meson. Initially it is observed as aK*\(\bar K\)+c.c. enhancement in the reactionsK−p→(Ks0K±π∓)Λ at 4.2 GeV/c. The isospin assignmentI=0 comes from its further observation in the reactionsK−p→(Ks0K±π∓)Σ0 andK−p→(Ks0K±π∓)Σ(1,385)0 but not inK−p→(K+K−π−)Σ+ orK−p→(Ks0K±π∓)Σ(1,385)+. A maximum likelihood analysis of the (K\(\bar K\)π) decay Dalitz plots in the reactionsK−p→(Ks0K±π∓) determines theJPC of theD′ meson to be 1++. A satisfactorySU(3) fit is obtained to a 1++ nonet composed of theI-1A1, theI=1/2QA with theD(1,285) and theD′(1,526) as theI=0 members having a mixing angle close to the magic one.

About 15 000 K − Φp events have been collected in the CERN Ω′ spectrometer. A partial-wave decomposition of the K − Φ system is performed. The 1 + SO + wave is dominant. The 0 − P0 + and 2 − P0 + waves are important and show resonant behaviour at ∼ 1.83 GeV (Γ ∼ 0.25 GeV) and ∼ 1.73 GeV (Γ ∼ 0.22 GeV) respectively. The first one can be interpreted as the second radial excitation of the kaon while the second one can be identified as one of the two L mesons.

Inclusive $\phi$ Production in $K^+ p$ Interactions at 70-{GeV}/$c$

We present results on inclusive φ meson production in K + p interactions at 70 GeV/ c in the kaon fragmentation x >0.2 region. Comparison with other data on φ meson production in K ± and p induced reactions provides evidence that the strange valence-quark fragmentation or recombination processes play the dominant role in the K ± → φ transitions. Arguments are presented that the kaon valence strange s -quark carries a much higher momentum fraction than the u-quark. Evidence for the previously observed narrow φπ + state at mass ∼2.1 GeV is discussed.
