We report on a study of the reaction, $\gamma p \to p \pi^+\pi^+\pi^-\pi^-\pi^0$, at an incident photon energy of 19.3 GeV. The most significant feature of this reaction is $\Delta^{++}$ production which occurs with a cross section of $0.6\pm 0.1 \mu$b. An upper limit is set for the cross section for the reaction, $\gamma p \to \Delta^{++}b_1^-(1235)$, and a search is made for resonances decaying to $b_1^\pm\pi^\mp$.

We present a new measurement of the virtual photon proton asymmetry A 1 p from deep inelastic scattering of polarized muons on polarized protons in the kinematic range 0.0008 < x < 0.7 and 0.2 < Q 2 < 100 GeV 2 . With this, the statistical uncertainty of our measurement has improved by a factor of 2 compared to our previous measurements. The spin-dependent structure function g 1 p is determined for the data with Q 2 > 1 GeV 2 . A perturbative QCD evolution in next-to-leading order is used to determine g 1 p ( x ) at a constant Q 2 . At Q 2 = 10 GeV 2 we find, in the measured range, ∫ 0.003 0.7 g 1 P (x) d x=0.139±0.006 ( stat ) ±0.008 ( syst ) ±0.006( evol ) . The value of the first moment Г 1 P = ∫ 0 1 g 1 p (x) d x of g 1 p depends on the approach used to describe the behaviour of g 1 p at low x . We find that the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule is violated. With our published result for Γ 1 d we confirm the Bjorken sum rule with an accuracy of ≈ 15% at the one standard deviation level.

Charged particle multiplicity in e+ e- --> q anti-q events at 161-GeV and 172-GeV and from the decay of the W boson.

Phys.Lett.B 416 (1998) 233-246, 1998.
Inspire Record 449290 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.47398

The data collected by DELPHI in 1996 have been used to measure the average charged particle multiplicities and dispersions in q q ̄ events at centre-of-mass energies of s =161 GeV and s =172 GeV, and the average charge multiplicity in WW events at s =172 GeV. The multiplicities in q q ̄ events are consistent with the evolution predicted by QCD. The dispersions in the multiplicity distributions are consistent with Koba-Nielsen-Olesen (KNO) scaling. The average multiplicity of charged particles in hadronic W decays has been measured for the first time; its value, 19.23±0.74(stat+syst), is consistent with that expected for an e + e − interaction at a centre-of-mass energy equal to the W mass. The charged particle multiplicity in W decays shows no evidence of effects of colour reconnection between partons from different W's at the present level of statistics.

Results are presented on p + ω,ø and J/ψ production in p-W and 32S-W interactions at 200GeV/c/nucleon measured via the dimuon decay in a large kinematic region. The data are normalized to the charged particle multiplicity in the same rapidity interval. They have been collected using the HELIOS/3 muon spectrometer at the CERN SPS. The ratio Bσø/ (Bσρ + Bσω), where B is the relevant resonance µµ branching fraction, increases between proton and sulphur projectiles, and is somewhat enhanced going from peripheral to central S-W interactions. This results from an increase in the number of produced ø’s per charged particle. The ratio is measured in different intervals of pt and rapidity. It is not clearly dependent on pt, but is larger at higher rapidities. J/Ψ production, likewise normalized to charged multiplicity, is significantly lower in S-W compared to p-W interactions.

Measurement of the W boson mass and W+ W- production and decay properties in e+ e- collisions at s**(1/2) = 172-GeV

Eur.Phys.J.C 1 (1998) 395-424, 1998.
Inspire Record 448093 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.47403

This paper describes the measurement of the W boson mass, M_W, and decay width, Gamma_W, from the direct reconstruction of the invariant mass of its decay products in W pair events collected at a mean centre-of-mass energy of sqrt{s} = 172.12 GeV with the OPAL detector at LEP. Measurements of the W pair production cross-section, the W decay branching fractions and properties of the W decay final states are also described. A total of 120 candidate W^+W^- events has been selected for an integrated luminosity of 10.36 pb^-1. The W^+W^- production cross-section is measured to be sigma_WW = 12.3 +/- 1.3(stat.) +/- 0.3(syst.) pb, consistent with the Standard Model expectation. The W^+W^- -> qq(bar) l nu and W^+W^- -> qq(bar)qq(bar) final states are used to obtain a direct measurement of Gamma_W = 1.30^{+0.62}_{-0.55}(stat.) +/- 0.18(syst.) GeV. Assuming the Standard Model relation between M_W and Gamma_W, the W boson mass is measured to be M_W = 80.32 +/- 0.30(stat.) +/- 0.09(syst.) GeV. The event properties of the fully-hadronic decays of W^+W^- events are compared to those of the semi-leptonic decays. At the current level of precision there is no evidence for effects of colour reconnection in the observables studied. Combining data recorded by OPAL at sqrt{s} ~ 161-172 GeV, the W boson branching fraction to hadrons is determined to be 69.8^{+3.0}_{-3.2}(stat.) +/- 0.7(syst.)%, consistent with the prediction of the Standard Model. The combined mass measurement from direct reconstruction and from the W^+W^- production cross-sections measured at sqrt{s} ~ 161 and sqrt{s} ~ 172 GeV is M_W = 80.35 +/- 0.24(stat.) +/- 0.07(syst.) GeV.

We report a new measurement of dijet production by color-singlet exchange in pp¯ collisions at s=1.8TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. In a sample of events with two jets of transverse energy ETjet>20GeV, pseudorapidity in the range 1.8<|ηjet|<3.5, and η1η2<0, we find that a fraction R=[1.13±0.12(stat)±0.11(syst)]% has a pseudorapidity gap within |η|<1 between the jets that can be attributed to color-singlet exchnage. The fraction R shows no significant dependence on ETjet or on the pseudorapidity separation between the jets.

We present a measurement of the differential cross section dσ/dΣETjet for the production of multijet events in pp¯ collisions where the sum is over all jets with transverse energy ETjet>ETmin. The measured cross section for events with ΣETjet>320GeV is compared to O(αs3) perturbative QCD predictions and QCD parton shower Monte Carlo predictions. The agreement between the O(αs3) predicted and observed event rates is reasonable for ETmin=100GeV, but poorer for ETmin=20GeV.

Asymmetries between the production of D(s)- and D(s)+ mesons from 500-Gev/c pi- nucleon interactions as functions of x(F) and p-transverse**2

This paper presents measurements of the production of Ds- mesons relative to Ds+ mesons as functions of x_F and square of p_t for a sample of 2445 Ds decays to phi pi. The Ds mesons were produced in Fermilab experiment E791 with 500 GeV/c pi- mesons incident on one platinum and four carbon foil targets. The acceptance-corrected integrated asymmetry in the x_F range -0.1 to 0.5 for Ds+- mesons is 0.032 +- 0.022 +- 0.022, consistent with no net asymmetry. The results, as functions of x_F and square of p_t, are compared to predictions and to the large production asymmetry observed for D+- mesons in the same experiment. These comparisons support the hypothesis that production asymmetries come from the fragmentation process and not from the charm quark production itself.

Measurement of inelastic J / psi photoproduction at HERA

Inspire Record 446830 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.44512

We present a measurement of the inelastic, non diffractive J/$\psi$ photoproduction cross section in the reaction $e^{+} p \to e^{+} {J}/\psi X$ with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The J/$\psi$ was identified using both the $\mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ and $e^{+}e^{-}$ decay channels and events were selected within the range $0.4<z<0.9$ ($0.5<z<0.9$) for the muon (electron) decay mode, where $z$ is the fraction of the photon energy carried by the J/$\psi$ in the proton rest frame. The cross section, the $p^2_T$ and the $z$ distributions, after having subtracted the contributions from resolved photon and diffractive proton dissociative processes, are given for the photon-proton centre of mass energy range $50<W<180$ GeV; $p^2_T$ is the square of the J/$\psi$ transverse momentum with respect to the incoming proton beam direction. In the kinematic range $0.4 < z < 0.9$ and $p^2_T > 1$ GeV$^2$, NLO calculations of the photon-gluon fusion process based on the colour-singlet model are in good agreement with the data. The predictions of a specific leading order colour-octet model, as formulated to describe the CDF data on J/$\psi$ hadroproduction, are not consistent with the data.
