We have measured the inclusive production properties of D and D messons produced from pp interactions at s =27.4 GeV . The differential production cross section is well represented by the empirical form d 2 σ d x F d P 2 T = 1 2 [σ ( D / D )(n+1)b](1−|x F |) n exp (−bp 2 T ) with n=4.9 ± 0.5, b=(1.0±0.1)( GeV /c) −2 , and the inclusive D / D cross section σ ( D / D ) is (30.2±3.3) ωb. The QCD fusion model predicts D / D production which is in good agreement with our data except for the magnitude of the cross section which depends sensitively on the assumed mass of the charm quark.

Results of fitting the differential distributions in x F and p T 2 of D mesons produced in 400 GeV/ c p-p interactions to the form d 2 σ d x F d p T 2 ∝(1−x F ) n exp [−(p T 2 /〈p T 2 〉)] are discussed. The D + distribution is found to be relatively hard [ n =3.1±0.8〈 P t 2 〉=1.32±0.27 (GeV/ c ) 2 ] and the D̄ 0 distribution relatively soft [ n =8.1±1.9,〈 p T 2 〉=0.62±0.14 (GeV/ c ) 2 ] compared to the average for all D's [ n =4.9±0.5,〈 p T 2 〉=0.99±0.10 (GeV/ c ) 2 ]. It is suggested that these distributions could reflect contribution of leading di-quarks in pp collisions. Comparison is made with evidence for leading quarks in charm production in 360 GeV/ cπ − p interactions.
The invariant (C=INV) and non-invariant (C=NON-INV) distributions are fitted to (1-XL)**POWER. Pt distribution is fitted to EXP(-PT**2/SLOPE).
We report evidence for the production of the charged D ∗ mesons in pp̄ collisions at s = 540 GeV . The search was confined to the charged particle fragments of hadronic jets, which are expected to be predominantly gluon jets in this experiment. The fragmentation function and production rate for D ∗ in jets of average transverse momentum of 28 GeV/ c are given.
THE D*'S ARE CONSIDERED AS ARISING ONLY FROM FRAGMENTATION OF HADRONIC JETS ('GLUON' JETS). HERE THE <PT> OF THE JET IS AROUND 28 GEV THE DEFINITION OF Z IS P(D*).P(JET)/(P(JET))**2.
We have searched for resonance production in the reaction γγ→Ks0Kπ. No signal was found for theηc and an upper limit for the radiative with\(\Gamma _{\gamma \gamma }^{\eta _c } \) keV (95% c.l.) is obtained. For the glueball candidate η(1440) (previouslyi) the upper limit\(\Gamma _{\gamma \gamma }^{\eta (1440)} B(\eta (1440) \to K\bar K\pi )< 1.2keV(95\% c.l.)\) is derived. In the tagged data sample resonance formation of a spin 1 state at 1420 MeV is observed, which is absent in the untagged data. The mass and width of this state are consistent with those of thef1(1420); an analysis of decay angular distributions favours positive parity.

The cross sections for Ξ− and Ω− inclusive production in Ξ− Be collisions at 116 GeV/c have been measured in the kinematic domain [0.1<xF<0.9, 0<pT<1.7 GeV/c]. The integrated cross sections per nucleon are found to be about twice as large as in Ξ−p collisions. The invariant cross sections increase by a factor of 70 for the Ξ−s and of 100 for the Ω−s between the central region (xF∼0.2) and the projectile fragmentation region (xF∼0.8). In the central region, they have about the same magnitude as the ones for Ξ− and Ω− inclusive production inp nucleon collisions. The Ξ− and Ω− polarisations have been measured over the same kinematic domain and are found to be compatible with zero.

Inclusive distributions of ρ0 and ω mesons have been measured in deep inelastic μ-p interactions at 280 GeV/c. A comparison of the ρ0 cross sections with other leptoproduction experiments is presented. The ω results represent the first observation of this inclusive channel in high energy leptoproduction. The ρ0 and ω yields are found to be equal as may be expected from the available density of states in isospin space. This contrasts with spin angular momentum where the vector to pseudoscalar meson ratio is suppressed relative to the available number of spin states.

The reaction e + e − → τ + τ − has been studied at centre of mass energies between 14.0 and 46.8 GeV with the CELLO detector at the PETRA e + e − collider. We present results for the cross section σ τ and the charge asymmetry A τ . The results are in good agreement with the standard model. We have also measured the topological decay rates BR 1 , BR 3 and BR 5 for the inclusive decay of the τ lepton into one, three and five charge particles. The results confirm and improve earlier CELLO measurements at other energies. We find for the combined values at all energies BR 1 = (84.9 ± 0.4 ± 0.3)%, BR 3 = (15.0 ± 0.4 ± 0.3)% and BR 5 = (0.16 ± 0.13 ± 0.04)%.

Symmetric three-jet events are selected from hadronic Z0 decays such that the two lower energy jets are each produced at an angle of about 150° with respect to the highest energy jet. In some cases, a displaced secondary vertex is reconstructed in one of the two lower energy jets, which permits the other lower energy jet to be identified as a gluon jet through anti-tagging. In other cases, the highest energy jet is tagged as a b jet or as a light quark (uds) jet using secondary vertex or track impact parameter and momentum information. Comparing the two lower energy jets of the events with a tag in the highest energy jet to the anti-tagged gluon jets yields a direct comparison of b, uds and gluon jets, which are produced with the same energy of about 24 GeV and under the same conditions. We observe b jets and gluon jets to have similar properties as measured by the angular distribution of particle energy around the jet directions and by the fragmentation functions. In contrast, gluon jets are found to be significantly broader and to have a markedly softer fragmentation function than uds jets. For the k⊥ jet finder with ycut=0.02, we find $${«ngle n^{⤪ ch.}»ngle {⤪ gluon}⩈er «ngle n^{⤪ ch.}»ngle {⤪ b} {⤪ quark}}=1.089pm 0.024 ({⤪ stat.})pm0.024 ({⤪ syst.})$$ $${«ngle n^{⤪ ch.}»ngle {⤪ gluon}⩈er «ngle n^{⤪ ch.}»ngle {⤪ uds} {⤪ quark}}=1.390pm 0.038 ({⤪ stat.})pm0.032 ({⤪ syst.})$$ as the ratios of the mean charged particle multiplicity in the gluon jets compared to the b and uds jets. The energy distribution of inclusive hadrons produced by 280 GeV muons on hydrogen and deuterium targets are compared. The sum of the scaled energy distributions of the positive and negative hadrons is found to be the same for the two targets. The difference of these distributions is observed to factorise inx andz and thez-dependence is found to be independent of the target type and have a form (1−z)2.1±0.2. The net charge of the hadronic jet is positive at highx even in the case when the scattering takes place on the neutron. These results are in good agreement with the expectations of the Quark Parton Model.

The fragmentation functions of u-quarks into positive and negative pions are determined from an analysis of identified pions produced in deep inelastic muon-deuterium scattering. The method adopted is not sensitive to the knowledge of the primary quark distribution functions. The fragmentation of u quarks to positive pions is found to fall less steeply in z than that to negative pions as expected in the quark parton model.

The cross sections for J ψ production have been measured in interactions of 280 GeV μ + on hydrogen and deuterium (H, D) and also in interactions of 250 GeV μ + on iron. The single-nucleon cross sections in iron are found to be larger than those in H, D. The mean ratio of the iron to H, D photoproduction cross sections in the range 60 < v < 200 GeV is 1.45 ±0.12 (statistical) ±0.22 (systematic error). Within the framework of the photon-gluon fusion model, this indicates that the gluon density per nucleon is ∼45% larger in iron than in H, D in the range 0.026 < x < 0.085, on a mass scale Q 2 eff ∼M 2 J ψ .

We present a measurement of the total cross section for γγ→hadrons, with one photon quasireal and the other a spacelike photon of mass squared −Q2. Results are presented as a function of Q2 and the γγ center-of-mass energy W, with the Q2 range extending from 0.2 to 60 GeV2, and W in the range from 2 to 10 GeV. The data were taken with the TPC/Two-Gamma facility at the SLAC e+e− storage ring PEP, which was operated at a beam energy of 14.5 GeV. The cross section exhibits a gentle falloff with increasing W. Its Q2 dependence is shown to be well described by an incoherent sum of vector-meson and pointlike scattering over most of the observed W range. Agreement at high Q2 is improved if a minimum-pT cutoff (motivated by QCD) is imposed on the pointlike contribution.

A study of the fragmentation properties of charm and bottom quarks intoD mesons is presented. The fractional decay widths\(\Gamma {{(Z^0\to {D \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {D {\bar D}}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {\bar D}}X)} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{(Z^0\to {D \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {D {\bar D}}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {\bar D}}X)} {\Gamma _h }}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {\Gamma _h }}\) are determined, and first results are presented for the production ofD mesons from\(c\bar c\) and\(b\bar b\) events separately. The average energy fraction ofD*± in charm quark fragmentation is found to be 〈XE(D*)〉c=0.487±0.015 (stat)±0.005 (sys.). Assuming that the fraction ofDs and charm-baryons produced at LEP is similar to that around 10 GeV, theZ0 partial width into charm quark pairs is determined to beΓc/Γh=0.187±0.031 (stat)±0.023 (sys). The probability for ab quark to fragment into\(\bar B_s \) orb-baryons is inferred to be 0.268±0.094 (stat)±0.100 (sys) from the measured probability that it fragments into a\(\bar B^0 \) orB−.

We have determined the strong coupling αs from measurements of jet rates in hadronic decays of Z0 bosons collected by the SLD experiment at SLAC. Using six collinear and infrared safe jet algorithms we compared our data with the predictions of QCD calculated up to second order in perturbation theory, and also with resummed calculations. We find αs(MZ2)=0.118±0.002(stat)±0.003(syst)±0.010(theory), where the dominant uncertainty is from uncalculated higher order contributions.

We have used data from the OPAL detector at LEP to reconstruct D ∗ mesons and secondary vertices in jets. We have studied the hemispheres of the events opposite these jets and obtain values of the hemisphere charged particle multiplicity in Z 0 → u u , d d , s s , Z 0 → c c and Z 0 → b b events of n uds = 10.41 ± 0.06 ± 0.09 ± 0.19 ; n c = 10.76 ± 0.20 ± 0.14 ± 0.19 ; n b = 11.81 ± 0.01 ± 0.12 ± 0.21 where the first errors are statistical, the second systmatic and the third a common scale uncertainty. We find the difference in total charged particle multiplicity between c and b quark events and light (u, d, s) quark events to be δ cl = 0.69 ± 0.51 ± 0.35; δ bl = 2.79 ± 0.12 ± 0.27. Ratios of the Psi' over the J/psi production cross sections in the dilepton channel for C, Ti and W targets have been measured in 920 GeV proton-nucleus interactions with the HERA-B detector at the HERA storage ring. The Psi' and J/psi states were reconstructed in both the mu+mu- and the e+e- decay modes. The measurements covered the kinematic range -0.35 < x_F < 0.1 with transverse momentum p_T < 4.5 GeV/c. The Psi' to J/psi production ratio is almost constant in the covered x_F range and shows a slow increase with p_T. The angular dependence of the ratio has been used to measure the difference of the Psi' and J/psi polarization. All results for the muon and electron decay channels are in good agreement: their ratio, averaged over all events, is R_psi'(mu)/R_psi'(e)=1.00+-0.08+-0.04. The reactions e + e − →γγγ and e + e − →γγγγ have been studied at center-of-mass energies between 35 and 46.8 GeV with an integrated luninosity of about 130 pb −1 accumulated with the CELLO detector at PETRA. The measurements are compared to QED calculations up to third and fourth orders of perturbation theory. Excellent agreement is observed.

The two-photon production of the η meson has been observed, and a value has been determined for the two-photon η decay width by a measurement of the cross section σ(e+e−→e+e−η) where η→γγ. The measurement was made with the TPC/Two-Gamma facility at the SLAC e+e− collider PEP, with an accumulated data sample of 64.5 pb−1. The η→γγ events were both triggered and detected by the pole-tip calorimeter. The measured two-photon η decay width is Γη→γγ=0.64±0.14 (statistical) ±0.13 (systematic) keV, in agreement with earlier similarly determined values.

We have searched for the annihilation of e+e− into the exclusive channels e±τ∓ and μ±τ∓ at √s =29 GeV, using 226 and 133 pb−1, respectively, of data taken with the Mark II detector at the SLAC storage ring PEP. The resulting candidate sample is compatible with the expected background from τ pair production. Our analysis yields 95%-C.L. cross-section limits of σeτ/σμμ<1.8×10−3 and σμτ/σμμ<6.1×10−3, where σμμ is the QED cross section for production of a lepton pair. This is the first high-Q2 test of lepton-flavor conservation involving τ leptons.

We have searched for signatures of polarization in hadronic jets from $Z~0 \rightarrow q \bar{q}$ decays using the ``jet handedness'' method. The polar angle asymmetry induced by the high SLC electron-beam polarization was used to separate quark jets from antiquark jets, expected to be left- and right-polarized, respectively. We find no evidence for jet handedness in our global sample or in a sample of light quark jets and we set upper limits at the 95\% C.L. of 0.063 and 0.099 respectively on the magnitude of the analyzing power of the method proposed by Efremov {\it et al.}
Polarized E- beam. Events were classified as being of light or heavy flavors based on impact parameters of charged tracks measured in the vertex detector. Jet handedness are measured for helicity-based and chirality-based analysis (seetext). C=95PCT CL indicates the upper limits at the 95 PCT C.L. on the magnitudes.
Differential cross section data of the CELLO experiment on pair production of muons, taus, and heavy quarks ine+e−-annihilation are presented and analysed, together with our data on Bhabha scattering, in terms of compositeness effects characterized by the mass scale Λ. We discuss difficulties in the combination of limits Λ from different experiments. The appropriate parameter to combine different results turns out to be ɛ=±1/Λ2, which is in contrast to Λ Gaussian distributed.

A study is made of the ωπ 0 system produced near threshold in the reaction γ p→ π + π − π 0 π 0 p. A spin-parity analysis shows that the ωπ 0 enhancement is consistent with predominant 1 + B(1235) production, with ∼20% J P = 1 − background.

Results are presented on inclusive production of resonant and non-resonant particle systems produced inK+p interactions at 32 GeV/c. We compareK*+(892),\(\bar \Sigma ^{ *- } \)(1385), Σ*±(1385), and ϱ0 inclusivex-spectra with the ones of non-resonantKs0π±,\(\bar \Lambda \pi ^ -\), Λπ± and π+π− pairs at the same effective mass. Resonance-particle pairsK*+π±, Σ*+π−, and\(\bar \Sigma ^{ *- } \pi ^ -\) are also studied together with non-resonant tripletsKs0π±, Λπ+π−,\(\bar \Lambda \pi ^ -\pi ^ -\). The invariantx-spectra of resonant particle pairs decrease less rapidly withx then the corresponding non-resonant pairs. Comparison with quark-recombination predictions indicates that the particles, resonances and multiparticle systems are probably created off a single valence quark or diquark instead of carrying all possible valence-quarks.

The K π − system produced in the reaction K p → K 0 π − p at 4.2 GeV/ c is studied using high-statistics bubble-chamber data. The spin-parity structure is analysed as a function of the K 0 π − mass up to 1.52 GeV. Production of K ∗ (890) and K ∗ (1420) is observed in helicity-0 and helicity-1 states. Contributions of natural and unnatural parity exchange are present. Considerable S-wave production is observed over the whole mass region considered. We also study the t ′ dependence of the K ∗ (890) and K ∗ (1420) amplitudes. A comparison of our results on K ∗ (890) production with the results of an analysis of charge-exchange K ∗ (890) production, allows the separation of I = 0 and I = 1 exchange amplitudes. Some qualitative remarks are made concerning K ∗ (1420) production.

A study of b quark fragmentation at LEP is presented using a sample of semileptonic B decays containing a fully reconstructed charm meson. The data are compared to several theoretical models for heavy quark fragmentation; the free parameters in these models are fitted and the sensitivity of the model parameters to the rate of P-wave B meson production is studied. The mean scaled energy fraction of B 0 and B + mesons has been determined to be < x E > = 0.695 ± 0.006 ± 0.003 ± 0.007, where the errors are statistical, systematic and model dependence respectively. This result is consistent with previous, less direct measurements from inclusive leptonic B decays. Also presented is a model independent fit to the shape of the energy distribution of weakly decaying B mesons at LEP.
