The absolute p-d elastic-scattering differential cross sections were measured at 641.3 and 792.7 MeV beam energies over a range of c.m. angles from ∼35° to ∼115° and ∼35° to ∼140°, respectively. The longitudinally polarized (L-type) proton beam produced by the Lamb-shift ion source at LAMPF was used. The beam intensity was measured to high accuracy (∼0.1%) by a scintillator-beam particle-counting system designed and developed prior to the experiment. Typical uncertainties in the absolute cross sections were about 2–3% total, somewhat larger at back angles. The present results were compared with the existing measurements and the controversy about the previous data at 800 MeV was resolved. The present data can be fit with a relativistic multiple-scattering theory which uses off-mass-shell extrapolations of the nucleon-nucleon amplitudes suggested by the structure of derivative meson-nucleon couplings. Relativistic-impulse-approximation calculations do not fit these data at either energy.

Diffractive excitation of 14.6-GeV/nucleon, 60-GeV/nucleon, and 200-GeV/nucleon O-16 and 14.6-GeV/nucleon Si-28 nuclei in nuclear emulsion

Inspire Record 326259 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.26176

An angular method of identifying diffractive excitation (DE) events for interactions of a hadron beam in nuclear emulsion is applied to identifying DE events in interactions of heavy ions beams. The ‘‘apparent’’ mean free paths (MFP) of DE processes for O16 (28Si) beams are 1.00±0.12, 2.4−0.7+1.6, and 2.2±0.4 (1.5±0.2) m, respectively, at 200, 60, and 14.6 GeV/nucleon, which corresponds to 20–10% of the MFP for total inelastic interactions. Distinctive features of diffractively excited nuclei are discussed.

K+ elastic scattering from C and Li-6 at 715-MeV/c

Michael, R. ; Barakat, M.B. ; Bart, S. ; et al.
Phys.Lett.B 382 (1996) 29-34, 1996.
Inspire Record 328538 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.28355

Elastic differential cross sections for K + mesons scattered from nat C and 6 Li targets have been measured at an incident momentum of 715 MeV/c and at angles of 7° to 42° in the laboratory frame. The experimental cross sections agree, within errors, with two different parameter-free impulse approximation calculations. To reduce the effects of the systematic errors, the ratio of the experimental cross sections for nat C to 6 Li is compared to the theoretical values, and these ratios do not agree with theory. This discrepancy suggests either a density-dependent alteration of K + -nucleon amplitudes or a failure of the optical potential calculations to describe these nuclides adequately.

Determination of $alpha_{s}$ in second order {QCD} from hadronic $Z$ decays

Distributions of event shape variables obtained from 120600 hadronicZ decays measured with the DELPHI detector are compared to the predictions of QCD based event generators. Values of the strong coupling constant αs are derived as a function of the renormalization scale from a quantitative analysis of eight hadronic distributions. The final result, αs(MZ), is based on second order perturbation theory and uses two hadronization corrections, one computed with a parton shower model and the other with a QCD matrix element model.

n p elastic spin transfer measurements at 485-MeV and 635-MeV

Phys.Rev.C 46 (1992) 47-51, 1992.
Inspire Record 342389 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.26097

We have measured the spin-transfer parameters KLL, KSL, KLS, and KSS at 635 MeV from 50° to 178° c.m. and at 485 MeV from 74° to 176° c.m. These new data have a significant impact on the phase-shift analyses. There are now sufficient data near these energies to overdetermine the elastic nucleon-nucleon amplitudes.

An Experimental study of the process gamma gamma ---> pi+ pi-

Using the CELLO detector, we have measured cross sections for the processγγ→π+π− in the mass range 0.75–1.9 GeV/c2. A partial wave fit to the data indicates the presence of a sizeableS-wave amplitude with signs of resonant behaviour. Values for the γγ width of thef2(1270) are given, showing the model-dependence of this quantity. At higher dipion masses, the model of Brodsky and Lepage is found to give an order of magnitude description of the data.

Measurements at 0-degrees of negatively charged particles and anti-nuclei produced in collision of 14.6-A/GeV/c Si on Al, Cu, and Au targets

Phys.Rev.Lett. 69 (1992) 2345-2348, 1992.
Inspire Record 344921 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.19827

We report measurements of d¯, p¯, K−, and π− produced at 0° in collisions of 14.6A GeV/c Si28 on Al, Cu, and Au targets. A beam-line focusing spectrometer was used to identify particles at rigidities from -2 to -8 GV. The ratio of d¯/p¯ invariant cross sections at midrapidity (y=1.7) is (1±0.7)×10−5, larger than expected from a calculation of dd¯ direct production but smaller than predicted by a simple coalescence model. We also report limits on the production of exotic particles.

Charge changing cross-sections of the neutron rich isotopes Li-8, Li-9, Li-11

Inspire Record 333513 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.16579

Total charge-changing cross sections have been measured for8Li on C and Pb targets, for9Li on C, Al, Cu, Sn and Pb targets, as well as for11Li on C, Sn and Pb targets at about 80 MeV/nucleon. These data are compared to measured total reaction cross sections and Glauber-type calculations using Hartree-Fock density distributions. These comparisons allow to draw conclusions on the proton density distribution of the neutronrich lithium isotopes. The results show that even for the most exotic nucleus11Li the proton distribution is only very weakly influenced by the long tail in the neutron density distribution already established in several experiments.

Charged particle multiplicity distributions for fixed number of jets in Z0 hadronic decays

The DELPHI collaboration Abreu, P. ; Adam, W. ; Adami, F. ; et al.
Z.Phys.C 56 (1992) 63-76, 1992.
Inspire Record 334948 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.14533

The multiplicity distributions of charged particles in full phase space and in restricted rapidity intervals for events with a fixed number of jets measured by the DELPHI detector are presented. The data are well reproduced by the Lund Parton Shower model and can also be well described by fitted negative binomial distributions. The properties of these distributions in terms of the clan model are discussed. In symmetric 3-jet events the candidate gluon jet is found not to be significantly different in average multiplicity than the mean of the other two jets, thus supporting previous results of the HRS and OPAL experiments. Similar results hold for events generated according to the LUND PS and to the HERWIG models, when the jets are defined by the JADE jet finding algorithm. The method seems to be insensitive for measuring the color charge ratio between gluons and quarks.
