The e + e − → p p cross section has been measured between 1925 and 2180 MeV. About 50 p p events were detected. The total cross section decreases from 1.31 ± 0.4 nb near 1937 MeV to 0.55 ± 0.2 nb near 2135 MeV. The proton form factors | G E | 2 and | G M | 2 , assumed identical, decrease from 0.15 ± 0.05 to 0.043 ± 0.015. They are an order of magnitude higher than predicted by the well-known dipole fit. The energy range has been scanned in steps of about 2 MeV. No significant structure was found in this p p sample.

High Statistics Measurement of Polarization in $\pi^- p \to K^0 \Lambda$ at 3-{GeV}/$c$ and 5-{GeV}/$c$

We have measured the polarization of the Λ hyperon produced in the reaction π−p→K0Λ at 3 and 5 GeV/c, for four-momentum transfers t′ out to 1.6 GeV2, by observing the parity-violating decay Λ→pπ−. With an increase in statistical power by a factor of 3 to 4 over the best previous experiments in this energy range, we confirm earlier observations that the polarization is small and positive below t′=0.4 GeV2, becoming large and positive for larger values of t′. In particular, at 5 GeV/c for all t′ between 0.8 and 1.6 GeV2 the polarization is consistent with a value of - 1.

In partial wave analyses of the ( π − π − π + ) system, substantial shape changes of the 1 + S ( ϱπ ) intensity as a function of t , and relative phase changes of ≈ 90°, provide compelling evidence for a resonant A 1 of mass ≈ 1280 MeV and width ≈ 300 MeV.

The J PC = 2 −+ partial wave intensities and their large phase changes prove the resonant nature of the A 3 meson (mass ≈ 1670 MeV, width ≈ 210 MeV). The decay modes are f 0 π , ϱ 0 π , and ϵ 0 π . Evidence is found for a further 2 − enhancement.

Observation of Charmed Baryon Production in e+ e- Annihilation

Phys.Rev.Lett. 44 (1980) 10, 1980.

A peak in the pK−π+ and p¯K+π− invariant-mass spectra at 2.285±0.006 GeV/c2 is observed, which is associated with the lowest-lying charmed baryon (Λc). A cross section times branching ratio of 0.037±0.012 nb at Ec.m.=5.2 GeV is measured with a substantial fraction of the events produced with an equal recoiling mass. New measurements of inclusive p and Λ cross sections are also presented, allowing an estimate of the branching ratio B(Λc→pK−π+)=0.022±0.010.

We present a measurement of the cross section for hadron production by e+e− annihilation in the vicinity of the previously observed resonance near 3.77 GeV. The data are used to determine the parameters of the ψ(3770) resonance. The values found are: mass, 3764±5 MeV/c2, total width, 23.5±5 MeV, and partial width to electron pairs, 276±50 eV.

The cross section for the process e + e − → multihadrons has been measured at the highest PETRA energies. We measure R (the total cross section in units of the point-like e + e - → μ + μ - cross section) to be 2.9 ± 0.7, 4.0 ± 0.5, 4.6 ± 0.4 and 4.2 ± 0.6 at s of 22, 27.7, 30 and 31.6 GeV, respectively. The observed average multiplicity, together with existing low energy data, indicate a rapid increase in multiplicity with increasing energy.

Direct Production of High $p_T$ Single Photons at the {CERN} Intersecting Storage Rings

Single photon production in pp collisions at 30 < √ s < 62 GeV has been measured with liquid-argon-lead calorimeters at the CERN ISR. This process remains approximately constant with increasing √ s . For fixed √ s , the single photon to π 0 ratio increases strongly with increase in p T . The γ π 0 ratio is about 0.2 for p T above 4.5 GeV/c.
