A study of the A2+ mass spectrum in π+p interactions at 3.7 GeVc is presented. For a cut of t′=0.1−2.0 GeV2 and on eliminating the Δ++ we find that the three-pion mass spectrum in the A2+ region is fitted by the dipole formula with a confidence level of 53% and a single Breit-Wigner formula with a confidence level of 11%. Our result thus favors A2+ splitting although a single Breit-Wigner fit cannot be ruled out. We also report the A2+ decay branching fractions measured over all t′ values. They are 0.78 ± 0.05, 0.15 ± 0.04, 0.06 ± 0.03, and < 0.02 for ρπ, ηπ, KK¯, and η′π, respectively, in good agreement with other experiments.

Results are reported on K − -neutron interactions at c.m. energies near 2 GeV. The interactions are dominated by strong production of hyperon resonances, particularly Σ(1385), Λ(1405) and Λ(1520). Production cross sections and angular distributions are given for the Σ(1385), Λ(1405) and Λ(1520) and branching fractions to decay modes observed in the experiment are given for Σ(1385) and Λ(1520). The strong energy dependence of some features of the data suggests that s -channel effects are dominant.

The joint decay density-matrix elements have been measured for the ρ0Δ++ and ωΔ++ channels at 3.7 GeV/c. The data are presented as a function of momentum transfer in both the t-channel and s-channel coordinate systems. The presence of correlated decays is illustrated for both reactions by employing selective cuts on the decay angles of one resonance, and displaying the effects on the decay distribution of the opposing resonance. An amplitude analysis is performed with the data near 0° production angle, where we obtain a helicity decomposition of the scattering amplitude with no experimental ambiguity.

We have measured ρ0, ω (combined) and ϕ electroproduction over a range of virtual-photon four-momentum Q2 from 0.4 to 2.2 GeV2 and for photon energies ν from 2.7 to 8.6 GeV. We find that the slope of the t (momentum transfer) dependence of the ρ0 and ω forward peak decreases with increasing Q2 to less than half of the photoproduction slope.
The cross section for virtual photon are derived from E- P cross section bydividing on the virtual-photon flux factor.
Results are reported based on a study of 3114 π−p events at 205 GeV/c in the National Accelerator Laboratory 30-in. bubble chamber. The measured π−p total and elastic cross sections are 24.0 ± 0.5 and 3.0 ± 0.3 mb, respectively. The elastic differential cross section has a slope of 9.0 ± 0.7 GeV−2 for 0.03≤−t≤0.6 GeV2. We have measured ep, eπ+, and eπ− coincidences for scattered electrons in the range Q2=0.4 to 2.2 GeV2 and W=2 to 4 GeV. We find (a) that vector-meson production decreases with Q2 more rapidly than does the total virtual-photon-plus-proton cross section, more rapidly even than the prediction of simple vector dominance, (b) that the slope of the t distribution in ρ and ω production becomes flatter with increasing Q2 and seems to be at least approximately a function of the single variable xρ=(Q2+mρ2)2Mν, (c) that the fraction of final states containing a proton decreases with increasing Q2, (d) that in the central region of longitudinal momenta the inclusive π+ yield seems to increase relative to the π− yield as Q2 increases, and (e) that the average transverse momentum of π− is greater than of π+ in the central region of longitudinal momenta.

ALLOWING FOR 65 PCT BACKGROUND.
In a 48 000-picture exposure of the Fermilab 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber to a 205 GeV/ c π − beam, we have measured 169 events of the reaction, π − p → π − π + π − p, with a cross section of 635 ± 61 μ b. This reaction proceeds almost entirely via low mass π − → 3 π and p → p ππ dissociation. Factorization is satisfied for p → pππ dissociation in πp and pp interactions.

MEAN CHARGED MULTIPLICITY. ERRORS ARE STATISTICAL ONLY.
We have searched the mass region 3.2 to 5.9 GeV for evidence of narrow resonances in e+e−→hadrons. We find no evidence for any such resonances other than the ψ(3695) in this region with a sensitivity ranging from about 12 to 45% of the integrated cross section of the ψ(3695). The more stringent bounds apply to resonances of a few MeV width, while the looser bounds apply to resonances of up to 20 MeV width.

The differential cross section of π+p elastic scattering has been measured in two high-statistics bubble-chamber exposures at laboratory beam momenta of 3.7 and 7.1 GeV/c. The effective u-channel Regge trajectory computed for these two energies has a slope of 0.22 ± 0.26.

We have observed an azimuthal asymmetry in inclusive hadron production by e+e− annihilation at the center-of-mass energy s=7.4 GeV. The asymmetry is caused by the polarization of the circulating beams in the storage ring and allows separate determination of the transverse and longitudinal structure functions. We find that transverse production dominates for x>0.2 where x is the scaling variable 2ps.

Most of these events are detected at or above a center-of-mass energy of 4 GeV. Results on K 0 and Λ production in p↑p interactions at 6 GeV are presented. The data are from an exposure of the Argonne 12 ft bubble chamber to a 60% transversely polarized proton beam. Results include data on Λ and K 0 inclusive production, and on the reactions p↑p → p Λ K + (p Σ 0 K + ). The beam asymmetry parameter for p ↑ p → K 0 ( K 0 ) + X is determined to be (−0.52 ± 0.12).

The total cross section of hadron photoproduction on C, Cu and Pb nuclei is measured for six energy values in the range 12–30 GeV. The obtained cross-section values for C and Cu nuclei have a weak energy dependence at high energies (above 20 GeV). The cross section for the Pb nucleus is somewhat higher in comparison with that expected, and energy dependence is not observed. The A -dependence of the effective number of hadrons agrees with VDM predictions.

The inclusive production of antiprotons and Λ's in e+e− annihilation has been measured as a function of the c.m. energy in the range 3.7-7.6 GeV. We find that the baryon cross section has a behavior different from the total hadronic production. Our results show a rapid rise in the ratio σp¯σμμ between 4.4 and 5 GeV, consistent with what would be expected from charmed baryon production. Λ¯ production is 10-15% of p¯ production at all energies.

The joint decay distribution statistical tensors for the reaction π + p→ ϱ 0 Δ ++ have been measured as a function of t at 3.75 GeV/ c . From this data the amplitude components of the reaction were extracted using both t -independent and t -independent methods. The magnitudes of the amplitudes obtained from both methods are found to agree and appear to be insensitive to the fitting methods. The phases are not well determined in the t -independent method. A comparison is made with a similar analysis done at 7.1 GeV/c.

A peak in the pK−π+ and p¯K+π− invariant-mass spectra at 2.285±0.006 GeV/c2 is observed, which is associated with the lowest-lying charmed baryon (Λc). A cross section times branching ratio of 0.037±0.012 nb at Ec.m.=5.2 GeV is measured with a substantial fraction of the events produced with an equal recoiling mass. New measurements of inclusive p and Λ cross sections are also presented, allowing an estimate of the branching ratio B(Λc→pK−π+)=0.022±0.010.

The expected momentum distribution for direct photons calculated to lowest order in quantum chromodynamics is qualitatively different from that observed in the data.
INCLUSIVE PHOTON AND PI0 MOMENTUM DISTRIBUTION.
We present a measurement of the cross section for hadron production by e+e− annihilation in the vicinity of the previously observed resonance near 3.77 GeV. The data are used to determine the parameters of the ψ(3770) resonance. The values found are: mass, 3764±5 MeV/c2, total width, 23.5±5 MeV, and partial width to electron pairs, 276±50 eV.

These observations are consistent with known properties of the N¯N(1897). A 3σ dip is present at ∼0.43 GeV/c mainly due to pp¯ annihilation. This dip cannot be understood in terms of a single resonance at N¯N(1897) and the S(1935). Our cross sections are ∼10-20% higher than the recent measurements of Hamilton et al.

We have used the ratio between the production rates of $K^0$'s and $π^−$'s in antineutrino-nucleon interactions in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber to measure the size of the SU (3) symmetry violation in the production of quark-antiquark pairs to be 0.27 ± 0.04. This value is significantly larger than the value obtained from a recent ep experiment. There is no apparent dependence of the $K^0$/$π^−$ ratio with $W^2 , Q ^2 , x_b$ or $p_T^2$ .

We have measured the asymmetry parameter A and the spin correlation parameter A nn in pp elastic scattering, using the Argonne ZGS polarized proton beam and a polarized proton target. Angular distributions of A and A nn for | t | ≳ 0.2 (GeV/ c ) 2 were obtained at eight momenta between 1.10 and 2 if 2.75 GeV/ c . We find significant structure in both the energy and t -dependence of A nn at these energies. At p lab ≈ 1.34 GeV/ c A nn reaches a very large value of about 0.8–0.9 near θ cm = 90°.

We present a study of the decay properties of charmed D mesons produced near the peak of the ψ′′(3770) resonance in e+e− annihilation. Branching fractions for nine Cabibbo-favored and three Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes are presented along with upper limits on one additional Cabibbo-favored and four additional Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes. A study of Kππ-decay-mode Dalitz plots reveals a large quasi-two-body pseudoscalar-vector component for the D0 decays and an apparent nonuniform population on the Dalitz plot for the D+ decay into K−π+π+. Using tagged events, we measure the charged-particle multiplicity and strange-particle content of D decays. A measurement of the D+ and D0 semileptonic decay fractions indicates that the D+ has a significantly longer lifetime than the D0.
INCLUSIVE CROSS SECTIONS UNCORRECTED FOR RADIATIVE EFFECTS.
The results of a study of strange particle production in charged current $\bar{\nu}_{\mu} N$ interactions in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber filled with a heavy $Ne-H_2$ mixture are presented. Production rates and average multiplicities of $K^0$'s and Λ's as functions of W 2 and Q 2 are given. The experimental data agree well with the quark-parton model predictions if a yield of 0.06 ± 0.02 of $K^0$'s and Λ's from charm production is included. Upper limits for D-meson production are given and the shape of the charmed quark fragmentation function is discussed. Inclusive production of the K ∗ (890) and Σ(1385) resonances is measured and it is shown that only about 5% of the K 0 mesons and Λ hyperons results from resonance decays. Relative production rates of neutral strange particles on proton and neutron targets are studied.

We present results of a detailed analysis of inclusive direct photon production at the ψ(3095). The direct-photon momentum distribution for x>0.4 is presented and compared with the leading-order quantum-chromodynamic prediction. The total production rate is found to be consistent with theoretical expectations, but the observed momentum distribution is considerably softer. Results of an analysis of some inclusive properties of the hadronic system recoiling against the direct photon are presented. The mean charged-particle and Ks multiplicities are presented as functions of the invariant mass of the hadronic system. These data agree well with the corresponding mean multiplicities measured in e+e− annihilations at center-of-mass energies comparable to the invariant mass of the hadronic system.

We present results on inclusive particle production in the antineutrino charged current induced hadron jets observed in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber. Fractional energy distributions, particle ratios and average multiplicities of the hadrons in the jets are measured. Ratios between the inclusive production rates of different mesons in the jets are studied to seek evidence for the d-quark origin of the observed hadrons. Good over-all agreement with the hypothesis of d-quark fragmentation with universal fragmentation functions obeying isospin systematics is established.

We present a measurement of the cross section for the reaction e + e − → e + e − π + π − π + π − at SPEAR. This channel is found to be large and dominated by the process γγ → ϱ 0 ϱ 0 → π + π − π + π − . The cross section, which is small just above the four-pion threshold, exhibits a large enhancement near the ϱ 0 ϱ 0 threshold.

We present results on the experimental study of inelastic charged-current antineutrino-nucleon scattering in the energy range of 10–200 GeV. The data sample, consisting of about 6500 antineutrino-induced events, was obtained in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber filled with a heavy neon-hydrogen mixture. The differential cross sections for ν μ N interactions are presented in terms of scaling variables x and y . The structure functions F 2 ν and xF 3 ν have been evaluated as functions of x and E ν . A deviation from the scaling hypothesis, similar to those found in other experiments on inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering, has been observed. The data are interpreted in the framework of the quark-parton model. Quark and antiquark distributions and their energy dependences are presented.

The first observation of μ + e + events produced in antineutrino interactions using the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber is reported. The relative yield of μ + e + events is (4.8 −3.2 +5.3 ) × 10 −4 of all charged-current events with antineutrino energy greater than 10 GeV. The observed V 0 rate is 1.0 −1.0 +1.2 per μ + e + event. Possible sources of these events are discussed.

We report a measurement of the cross section for the process γγ → π + π − at invariant masses 500 MeV/ c 2 < m ππ <2000 MeV/ c 2 . A value for the radiative width of the f(1270) tensor meson Γ f→ γγ = 3.6 ± 0.3 ± 0.5 KeV (helicity λ = 2) has been obtained from a fit to the observed ππ mass spectrum.

The cross section for η′ production by the reaction e+e−→e+e−η′ has been measured at beam energies from 2.0 to 3.7 GeV. The radiative width Γγγ(η′) has been determined to be 5.8±1.1 keV (±20% systematic uncertainty). Upper limits on the radiative widths of the f(1270), A2(1310), and f′(1515) tensor mesons have been determined. A search has been made for production of the E(1420) by γγ collisions, but no signal is observed.
