We have measured the properties of Z 0 → b b decays using a sample of 944 inclusive muon events, corresponding to 18 000 hadron events obtained with the L3 detector at LEP. We measured the partial decay width of the Z 0 into b b , Γ b b =353±48 MeV , and we determined the vector coupling of the Z 0 to the b quark; g rmv 2 (b)=0.095±0.047. We measured the forward-backward charge asymmetry in e + e − → b b events at √ s ≈ M v , and obtained A b b =13.3±9.9% .
BOTTOM quark charge asymmetry measurement.
We have made a precise measurement of the cross section for e + e − →Z 0 →hadrons with the L3 detector at LEP, covering the s range from 88.28 to 95.04 GeV. From a fit to the Z 0 mass, total width, and the hadronic cross section to be M Z 0 =91.160 ± 0.024 (experiment) ±0.030(LEP) GeV, Γ Z 0 =2.539±0.054 GeV, and σ h ( M Z 0 )=29.5±0.7 nb. We also used the fit to the Z 0 peak cross section and the width todetermine Γ invisible =0.548±0.029 GeV, which corresponds to 3.29±0.17 species of light neutrinos. The possibility of four or more neutrino flavors is thus ruled out at the 4σ confidence level.

We have measured both the rates and the forward-backward asymmetry of ℓ + ℓ − from Z 0 →ℓ + ℓ − (where ℓ= μ , τ ) with the L3 detector. We obtained Γ ℓℓ =88±4±3 MeV and the vector neutral current coupling constant, g v =0.00±0.07 and the axial vector neutral current coupling constant, g A =−0.515±0.015.

We have measured the total e + e − hadronic annihilation cross section at the center of mass energies between 50.0 GeV and 61.4 GeV with the TOPAZ detector at TRISTAN. The full electroweak radiative corrections (up to O(α 3 )) were applied to the data which were analysed together with the published data from PEP and PETRA. We then determined the standard model parameters, M z (the mass of the Z), sin w 2 θ (the Weinberg angle) and Λ MS (the QCD scale parameter) by comparing the experimental data with the prediction of the standard model. The best fit values are M z = 89.2 −1.8 +2.1 GeV/c 2 , sin 2 θ w = 0.233 −0.025 +0.035 and Λ MS = 0.327 −0.206 +0.275 GeV. A constraint is obtained on the heavy top quark mass through the radiative corrections if we take the SLC value of M z (91.1 GeV / c 2 ).

We report the results of first physics runs of the L3 detector at LEP. Based on 2538 hadron events, we determined the mass m z 0 and the width Γ z 0 of the intermediate vector boson Z 0 to be m z 0 =91.132±0.057 GeV (not including the 46 MeV LEP machine energy uncertainty) and Γ z 0 =2.588±0.137 GeV. We also determined Γ invisible =0.567±0.080 GeV, corresponding to 3.42±0.48 number of neutrino flavors. We also measured the muon pair cross section and determined the branching ratio Γ μμ = Γ h =0.056±0.006. The partial width of Z 0 →e + e − is Γ ee =88±9±7 MeV.

Data are presented for the left-right asymmetry in inclusive production of π+, π−, and p with proton beams (polarized normal to the scattering plane) of 13.3 and 18.5 GeV/c incident on a LH2 target. At both energies the asymmetry in π+ production grows steadily to about 25% near the kinematic limit, whereas the π− and p asymmetries are consistent with zero over the measured range of pt, 1.1–2.2 GeV/c.

A measurement of direct photon production in pp collisions at a center of mass energy ∝ s =63 GeV is reported. Arrays of lead-glass calorimeters and multiwire proportional chambers were used as photon detectors. Data are presented in the transverse momentum range from 4.5 to 10 GeV/ c and compared with QCD predictions. The event structure of this sample is compared with that of a set dominated by high transverse momentum π O ́ ' s .

This paper reports cross-section measurements for the ρ0 and K*(890) vector mesons produced in e+e− annihilation at s=29 GeV. The data, which were taken with the High Resolution Spectrometer operating at the SLAC colliding-beam facility PEP, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 291 pb−1. The measured multiplicities for fractional momentum x>0.05 are Nρ0=0.79±0.04 and NK*0(890)=0.53±0.04. The measured fragmentation functions agree well with the predictions of the Lund model and when extrapolated to threshold, the corresponding total multiplicities are Nρ0=0.90±0.05 and NK*0(890)=0.59±0.05.

The production of neutral pions by the interaction of 200A·GeV p and16O projectiles with a Au target has been studied in the pseudorapidity range 1.5≦η≦2.1. Transverse momentum spectra have been measured between 0.4 GeV/c and 3.6 GeV/c and their dependence on the centrality of the collision has been investigated. The peripheral-collision spectra display a marked change of slope with a hard component starting at about 1.8 GeV/c, in contrast to central-collision data. The data are discussed in comparison to p+p and α+α data from the ISR.

We report new measurements of the production cross section for the reaction e+e−→τ+τ− at s=29 GeV, as well as the topological decay branching fractions of the τ lepton. The data were taken with the High Resolution Spectrometer at the SLAC e+e− colliding-beam facility PEP. The measured cross section yields Rττ=1.044±0.014±0.030 [where the first (second) error is statistical (systematic)], consistent with QED and corresponding to QED cutoff parameters of Λ+>129 GeV and Λ−>284 GeV at the 95% C.L. The fractions of τ decays into one and three charged particles are B1=0.864±0.003±0.003 and B3=0.135±0.003±0.003.
