The inclusive production of D ∗± mesons in single tagged photon-photon collisions is investigated using the JADE detector at PETRA. D ∗± mesons are reconstructed through their decay into D 0 +π ± where the D 0 decays via D 0 →Kππ 0 . The event rate and topology are compared to the expectations of c quark production in the quark-parton model: γγ→c c .

Results on hyperon production are reported for data accumulated at 10 GeV centre-of-mass energy with the ARGUS detector. Signals for both the octet states Λ, Σ 0 and Ξ − and the decuplet states Σ ± (1385), Ξ 0 (1530) and Ω − are observed 1 (references to a specific state are to be interpreted as also implying the charge conjugate state), some for the first time in e + e − annihilation. Baryon rates from γ dir (1S) decays are enhanced by a factor of about 3 over the continuum.

We have measured the total normalized cross section R for the process e + e − → hadrons at centre-of-mass energies between 14.0 and 46.8 GeV based on an integrated luminosity of 60.3 pb −1 . The data are well described by the standard SU(3) c ⊗SU(2) L ⊗U(1) model with the production of the five known quarks. No open production of a sixth quark with charge 2/3 or 1/3 occurs below a centre-of-mass energy of 46.6 or 46.3 GeV, respectively. A fitting procedure which takes the correlations between measurements into account was used to determine the electroweak mixing angle sin 2 θ w and the strong coupling constant α s ( S ) in second-order QCD. We applied this procedure to the CELLO data and in addition included the data from other experiments at PETRA and PEP. Both fits give consistent results. The fit to the combined data yields α s (34 2 GeV 2 ) = 0.165±0.030, and sin 2 θ w = 0.236±0.020. Fixing sin 2 θ w at the world average value of 0.23 yields α s (34 2 GeV 2 ) = 0.169±0.025.

We report measurements of two-particle correlations in rapidity space between a p¯ or Λ¯ and an additional p, p¯, Λ, or Λ¯. We find evidence for local conservation of baryon number, and for the first time observe a pronounced anticorrelation between baryons with the same value of baryon number. Such an anticorrelation is expected in fragmentation models where the rapidity order of particles closely reflects their ‘‘color order,’’ as is the case, for example, in recent versions of the Lund string model.

We have determined the double inclusive cross-section for opposite-side high-pT photons and away-side jets withθγ≈θjet≈90° produced inpp collisions at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings at\(\sqrt s= 63\) GeV. Under the assumption that these events arise predominantly from the QCD gluon Compton process we have calculated the gluon structure function in the range 0.15≦x≦0.30 at an average square of the four-momentum transfer of 40 GeV2/c2. The data favour a soft gluon distribution in the proton.

The charged particle multiplicity distributions for two-jet events ine+e− annihilation at 29 GeV have been measured using the High Resolution Spectrometer at PEP. A Poisson distribution describes the data for both the complete event and for the single jets. In addition, no correlation is observed between the multiplicities in the two jets of an event. For fixed values of the prong number of the complete event, the multiplicity sharing between the two jets is in good agreement with a binomial distribution. The rapidity gap distribution is exponential with a slope equal to the mean rapidity density. These observations, which are consistent with a picture of independent emission of single particles, are contrasted to the results from soft hadronic collisions and conclusions are drawn about the nature of clusters.
Charged Particle Multiplicity distributions for single jet and whole event from the two jet sample. The numerical values are given in the paper Derrick et al, PR D34 (86) 3304, and are coded in this database as (<a href=http://durpdg.dur.ac.uk/scripts/reacsearch.csh/TESTREAC/red+1437> RED = 1437 </a>).

Inelastic and elasticJ/ψ (3097) photoproduction on Li6 are measured at a mean γ energy of 90 GeV in an open spectrometer. TheJ/ψ are identified by their decays intoμ+μ− ore+e−. A signal of ψ′(3685) intoμ+μ− andJ/ψπ+π− is also seen. The inelastic cross-section withZ=Eψ/Eγ<0.9 is compared in shape and magnitude with the colour singlet model of photon-gluon fusion.

Data are presented on inclusive π0 production in the forward c.m. hemisphere (xF>0.025) in π+p,K+p andpp interactions at 250 GeV/c. These data are compared to results at other energies and interpreted in terms of quark-parton models.

We report Λ 0 -hyperon polarization measurements at the CERN intersecting storage rings from √ s of 31 to 62 GeV. P Λ 0 changes insignificantly, +(0.8±1.7)%, over this range of √ s . However, P Λ 0 is observed to grow with Feynman- x F and with transverse momentum. At an average p t of 1.1 GeV/ c , P Λ 0 depends linearly on x F and approaches −40% at x F =0.8.
