A study of τ-lepton production in the CMS energy region from 14 to 46.8 GeV at PETRA is reported. The cross section, the decay branching ratio into μν ν , and the electroweak parameters are determined with a total integrated luminosity of 115 pb −1 .
Total cross section calculated from measured channel cross section assuming BR(tau-mu) = 17.6 pct. SIG(Q=MU) is the QED point cross section.

MULTIPLICITIES OF PI0 WAS OBTANED FROM MULTIPLICITIES OF GAMMAS: MULT(PI0)=MULT(GAMMA)/2.
PI- NUCLEON= (PI- P + PI- N)/2.
PI- NUCLEON= (PI- P + PI- N)/2.
We use the reaction e+e−→μ+μ−, in the Mark J detector at the DESY high-energy e+e− collider PETRA, to test the standard electroweak theory and find good agreement. We also set limits on the parameters of several extended gauge theories.
CROSS SECTION MEASUREMENT RELATIVE TO PREDICTED QED CROSS SECTION.
FORWARD-BACKWARD ASYMMETRY. THE SYSTEMATIC ERROR IN THE ASYMMETRY IS <0.5 PCT.

Results are presented on the charge exchange reaction\(\bar pp \to \bar nn\) and\(\bar np\) annihilations from bubble chamber exposures to antiproton beam of momenta 700 and 760 MeV/c. The differential cross section of\(\bar pp \to \bar nn\) shows a forward spike followed by a clear dip bump structure. Total annihilation cross section of\(\bar np\) for average\(\bar n\) momentum of 700 MeV/c has been evaluated to be 55.4±2.2 mb. The multiplicity, Feynmanx andpT2 distributions for inclusive charged pions in\(\bar pp\) and\(\bar np\) annihilations are found to be similar. The emission of charged pions from\(\bar np\) annihilations are found to be consistent with thermodynamic models with temperature ∼110 MeV.

Light ion collisions with carbon target at 4.2 GeV/c/N are studied. Pion multiplicity distributions, momentum and angular spectra are analysed. These data are described in terms of models assuming independent interactions of nucleons from the projectile nucleus with the target.

DATA ARE CORRECTED FOR TWO-PHOTON AND TAU PRODUCTION EFFECTS, ACCEPTANCE AND QED RADIATIVE EFFECTS UP TO ORDER ALPHA**3. THERE IS ALSO A 6 PCT NORMALISATION ERROR NOT INCLUDED. THE OVERALL AVERAGE VALUE OF R FROM THIS DATA IS 3.88 +- 0.04 +- 0.22.

With use of the MARK-J detector at s=34.7 GeV 21 000 e+e−→hadron events have been collected. By measurement of the asymmetry in angular energy correlations the strong coupling constant αs=0.13±0.01 (statistical)±0.02 (systematic) is determined, in complete second order, and independent of the fragmentation models and QCD cutoff values used.

The measurement of the nonelectromagnetic forward-backward charge asymmetry in the reaction e+e−→μ+μ− at s∼34.6 GeV and in the angular region 0<|cosθ|<0.8 is reported. With a systematic error less than 1%, we observe an asymmetry of (-8.1±2.1)%. This is in agreement with the standard electroweak theory prediction of (-7.6±0.6)%. The weak-current coupling constants are also reported.
