In the reaction p p → 3π + 3π − 2227 events, and in the reaction p p → 3π + 3π − π 0 6578 events have been analyzed. The general characteristics of the reactions, such as total cross sections, angular and momentum distributions, the production of ϱ, f, ω and η mesons, and angular correlations are presented.

The doubly-differential cross sections for the pp → ppη and pd → ηX reactions have been measured at incident proton energies of 1.3 and 1.5 GeV. The ratio of the pd to pp -induced cross sections varies from about 8–10 at 1.3 GeV to 4.5–6 at 1.5 GeV in the η kinetic energy interval 100 MeV ⩽ T η ⩽220 MeV. Information on the pn → ηX reaction has been extracted from these measurements within the framework of a simple folding model.

The total cross section of the pp→ pp η reaction has been measured at incident proton energies of 1.265, 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5 GeV by detecting the two photons from the η decay in the PINOT spectrometer. The data are compared with other near-threshold measurements and with the predictions of existing theoretical calculations.
Value given at 1263 MeV assumes energy 2 MeV lower than nominal value. This uncertainty only affects this lowest energy point.
The differential elastic p−p scattering cross section was measured at 6 GeV/c at the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron in the range P⊥2=0.60−1.0 (GeV/c)2 using a 65% polarized target and a 75% polarized proton beam of intensity 3 × 109 protons/pulse. The polarization of the recoil proton was simultaneously measured with a well calibrated carbon-target polarimeter. All three polarizations were measured perpendicular to the horizontal scattering plane. Our results indicate that P and T invariance are both obeyed to good precision even at our largest P⊥2. Parity invariance implies that the eight single-flip transversity cross sections are zero, so our data gives the magnitudes of the eight remaining pure spin cross sections where all spins are measured. We find that the four double-flip transversity cross sections are nonzero.

THE FIVE INDEPENDENT PURE FOUR-SPIN CROSS SECTIONS AS DERIVED FROM THE EIGHT MEASURED THREE-SPIN CROSS SECTIONS ASSUMING P AND T INVARIANCE. THE ABSOLUTE DIFFERENTIAL CROSS SECTION VALUES ASSUME THAT THE SPIN-AVERAGED D(SIG)/DT IS 2.25, 1.17, 0.365 AND 0.167 MB/GEV**2 FOR EACH VALUE OF PT**2 RESPECTIVELY.

The spin-transfer parameter K n 00 n of the p p↑ → n ↑n charge exchange reaction has been measured for the first time at the CERN Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR), at 875 MeV/ c p momentum, in the centre-of-mass scattering-angle range from 45° to 78°. To measure the transverse polarisation of the n 's, a thick scintillator counter hodoscope was used as live target, and the elastic n p scattering on the hydrogen of the scintillator was used as analysing reaction of the n transverse polarisation. Its so far unmeasured analysing power is taken as linear in momentum transfer, A n p = α·q , and results are given for α · K n 00 n . The values one obtains for K n 00 n , estimating α from N N potential models, are less than 0.25, in agreement with the predictions.

We have remeasured the total cross section for proton-proton scattering at 2-6 GeV/c in the spin states ↑↑ and ↑↓ perpendicular to the beam direction. With the reduced errors significant differences were found between the two cross sections.

We have measured the asymmetry of the cross section for γp→π+n from a polarized target at 5 and 16 GeV. The range of four-momentum transfer was 0.02<~−t<~1.0 GeV2. The π+ mesons were produced in a polarized butanol target and detected with the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center 20−GeVc spectrometer. A sizable asymmetry was found at both 5 and 16 GeV, a typical value being -0.6 near −t=0.3 GeV2. A small amount of data on the asymmetry of other photoproduction processes was also obtained.

Analysing powers and differential cross sections for p p → π − π + and p p → K − K + have been measured over the full angular range using a polarised target at LEAR at 20 beam momenta from 360 to 1550 MeV/ c . Discrepancies in the normalisation of earlier d σ/ d Ω data at low momenta are clarified. Above 1000 MeV/ c , A 0N results confirm values close to +1 over most of the angular range for both reactions, in excellent agreement with earlier data of lower statistics. Below 1000 MeV/ c , where the analysing power is measured for the first time, large variations of A 0N with energy and angle are present.

The reaction K − n → K − π + π − n has been studied in the SLAC 82″ liquid deuterium bubble chamber with a beam momentum of 12 GeV/ c . Although the kinematic fit for this final state has only one constraint, nonetheless a reasonably pure sample has been obtained. The cross section for the reaction is 1.02 ± 0.10 mb. The process K − n → K ∗0 890 Δ − is observed with cross section 36 ± 9 μ b and t -slope of 10 ± 2 (GeV/ c ) −2 . A kaon diffraction dissociation sample has been obtained, although the Q-signal is not so strong as in experiments with proton targets. Neutron dissociation into n π + π − is also observed with similar properties to those of proton dissociation into p π + π − , but with a broader t -distribution.

Inclusive production of ifπ ± , K ± and p has been studied near charm threshold for c.m. energies between 3.6 and 5.2 GeV. Differential and scaling cross sections together with particle multiplicities have been determinated. By comparing data below and above charm threshold the charm contribution to if π ± and K ± production has been extracted. A comparison has been made between inclusice p production and inelastic electron-proton scattering. To study differences between three-gluon annihilation and two-quark production of the spectra from J/ decay and from non-resonant production at 3.6 GeV has been compared.
