Angular distributions of the analyzing powers for π+p→ and π−p→ elastic scattering have been measured in a single-scattering experiment employing a polarized proton target. Measurements were obtained for pion energies of 98, 139, 166, 215, and 263 MeV. The addition of these data to the existing πp database significantly reduces the uncertainties in all S and P phase shifts for πp reactions over the delta resonance.
Measured values of the analyzing power for PI+ P elastic scattering at incident kinetic energy 98 MeV.
Measured values of the analyzing power for PI+ P elastic scattering at incident kinetic energy 139 MeV.
Measured values of the analyzing power for PI+ P elastic scattering at incident kinetic energy 166 MeV.
The reaction pp→p f (K + K − K + K − )p s in which the K + K − K + K − system is centrally produced has been studied at 300 GeV/ c . φφ production has been observed and the ratio σ (φK + K − )/ σ ( φφ ) is 1.0±0.3. The cross section for central production of φφ is found to be the same at 300 GeV/ c and 85 GeV/ c . An angular analysis of the φφ system favours J P =2 + over 0 − .

Results are presented of an analysis of the reaction pp→p f (K S 0 K ± π ∓ )p s at 300 GeV/ c . Clear f 1 (1285) and f 1 (1420) signals are seen. A spin-parity analysis shows that both are consistent with being 1 ++ states. The f 1 (1420) is found to decay only to K ∗ K and no 0 −+ or 1 +− waves are required to describe the data. The production of the f 1 (1285) as a function of energy is not the same as that for the f 1 (1420) whose cross section is found to be constant with energy.

The analyzing power for elastic pd scattering at 3.5 GeV has been measured in the region 0.1⩽−t⩽1.5 (GeV/ c ) 2 , using the polarized proton beam at KEK. The angular distribution shows a behavior similar to that in the lower energy region. It is reproduced fairly well by the predictions of a multiple scattering model based on the Glauber theory.

The total cross section for e + e − annihilation into hadrons has been measured for CM energies ranging from 50 to 57 GeV. We fit the predictions of the standard model to these measurements and those at lower energies. The mass of the Z 0 boson, M Z , and the QCD scale parameter, Λ MS , are derived from the fit. The results are M Z =88.6 −1.8 +2.0 GeV/ c 2 , and Λ MS =0.15 −0.11 +0.16 GeV .

Central collisions of 800-GeV protons with the heavy components of nuclear emulsion, Ag107 and Br80, have been investigated to determine the characteristics of small-impact-parameter collisions and, by comparison with the analysis of inclusive proton-emulsion inelastic interactions and inelastic proton-nucleon collisions, to study the dependence of the interaction process on the mean number of intranuclear collisions 〈ν〉. The data are also compared with the results obtained in proton-emulsion collisions, both central and inclusive, at 200 GeV. The variations in the secondary-particle multiplicities and the normalized pseudorapidity density correlate with 〈ν〉 and demonstrate that proton-nucleus interactions, both central and inclusive, can be described adequately by the incoherent superposition of proton-nucleon collisions.

We report measurements from elastic photoproduction of ω's on hydrogen for photon energies between 60 and 225 GeV, elastic φ photoproduction on hydrogen between 35 and 165 GeV and on deuterium between 45 and 85 GeV, elastic photoproduction on deuterium of an enhancement at 1.72 GeV/c2 decaying into K+K−, and elastic and inelastic photoproduction on deuterium of pp¯ pairs.

The polarization of the recoil proton in π+p and π−p elastic scattering using a liquid-hydrogen target has been measured for backward angles at 547 and 625 MeV/c. The scattered pion and recoil proton were detected in coincidence using the large-acceptance spectrometer to detect and analyze the momentum of the pions and the JANUS polarimeter to identify and measure the polarization of the protons. Results from this experiment agree with other measurements of the recoil polarization, with analyzing-power data previously taken by this group, and with predictions of partial-wave analyses.

We present the results of a study of muon pairs with invariant masses greater than 4.05 GeV/c2 produced in high-energy pion-nucleon interactions. The production cross section together with the inferred pion and nucleon structure functions are reported and compared with other experiments and with QCD predictions. The transverse-momentum distributions are also presented. Finally, the full angular distribution in cosθ and φ is given as a function of mass, Feynman x, and transverse momentum. Longitudinal photon polarization is seen in the lower portion of the mass range at high xπ. This result is compared with a higher-twist model.

Measurements of inclusive transverse-momentum spectra for KS0 mesons produced in proton-antiproton collisions at s of 630 and 1800 GeV are presented and compared with data taken at lower energies. The ratio, as a function of pT, of the cross section for KS0 to that for charged hadrons is very similar to what is observed at lower energies. At 1800 GeV, we calculate the strangeness-suppression factor λ=0.40±0.05.
Estimated effective cross sections for events which pass the trigger and selection criteria. The uncertainties in these represent the principal source of error in the overall normalisation of the results.
