pi--p Interactions at 683 MeV/c

Interactions of 683-MeV/c negative pions with protons were investigated using the BNL 14-in. hydrogen bubble chamber in a 17-kG field. Two thousand elastic scatterings were analyzed, yielding a cross section of 18.9±1.0 mb. No evidence for powers of cosθ higher than the second was observed in the elastic angular distribution. The angular distribution obtained was dσdω=(0.384±0.026)+(1.70±0.06)cosθ+(3.36±0.11)cos2θ mb/sr. The single-pion production reactions π−+p→π−+π0+p and π−+p→π−+π++n were studied in detail. A total of 441 π0 productions and 833 π+ productions were analyzed giving cross sections of 3.99±0.50 and 7.50±0.80 mb, respectively. The differential distributions for these inelastic processes are presented and compared with the predictions of the model of Olsson and Yodh. The distribution of events on the Dalitz plots for π0 production is accounted for by the model. However, for the π+ reaction, the model (so far developed) does not describe adequately the distribution of events on the Dalitz plot. In particular, the model fails to account for the enhancement at high (π+π−) effective masses in ππ mass distribution. The center-of-mass angular distributions for π0 and π+ production reactions are presented and compared with the model.

A 14-in. liquid-hydrogen-filled bubble chamber in a 17.5-kG magnetic field was exposed to a beam of negative pions produced by the Cosmotron at Brookhaven National Laboratory. About 26 000 pictures were taken and examined for the following final states: (1) elastic scattering (π−p); (2) π+ production (π−π+n); (3) π0 production (π−π0p); (4) neutrals. Values for the cross sections for these processes are σ(elastic)=17.56±0.43 mb, σ(π+)=7.14±0.23 mb, σ(π0)=4.65±0.17 mb. The elastic-scattering angular dependence in the c.m. system is fitted by a power-series expansion in cosθ and gives the following coefficients: a0=0.27±0.02, a1=1.48±0.11, a2=3.86±0.22, a3=−0.29±0.53, a4=−0.65±0.28, a5=1.69±0.52 (units: mb/sr). Cross sections for multiple-pion production were also measured: σ(π−π+π0n)=0.33±0.04 mb, σ(π−π+π−p)=0.08±0.02 mb. The total neutral cross section was σ(neutrals)=11.78±0.43 mb; the total charged events cross section was σ(charged)=29.76±0.69 mb; and the total cross section was σ(total)=41.54±0.82 mb. For single-pion production events, two-body mass distributions and angular distributions were compared with the predictions of the Olsson-Yodh isobar model.

Single-pion production has been studied in the reactions π−p→π−π+n and π−p→π−π0p at 790, 830, and 870 MeV. A total of 4193 events in these two channels, divided approximately equally between the three energies, have been identified. The most interesting feature of the data is the tendency for events to concentrate at high values of mππ and low values of four-momentum transfer. These effects are discussed in terms of conventional isobar models and a model involving two-pion exchange. Partial cross sections for the reactions studied are reported for each energy.

Small-angle differential cross sections are presented here for π−+p→π0+n charge-exchange scattering between 2.4 and 3.8 GeV/c. The differential cross section near t=0 displays two minima and one maximum in this momentum interval, reflecting the presence of the N32*(2420), N32*(2850), and N12*(2650) resonances; at larger t values, the cross sections fall off exponentially as a function of t, just as has been previously observed for charge-exchange scattering above 6 GeV/c. The pion-charge-exchange data reported here at 6 and 10 GeV/c extend out to large angles, showing a maximum near t=0, followed by an exponential falloff as e10t, a minimum near −t=0.6 (GeV/c)2, and then a second maximum near −t=1.0 (GeV/c)2. The π−+p→η0+n differential cross section shows a maximum near t=0, followed by an exponential falloff as e4t, much less steep than the π0 slope. These data are compared to our previously published data and to those of the Saclay-Orsay group.

About 3700 two-prong and 5600 four-prong events of 10-GeV/c pp interactions in the Saclay 81-cm hydrogen bubble chamber have been measured and analyzed. The reliability of the identification of the different final states has been checked using Monte Carlo-generated events. For the channels accessible to analysis, cross sections and invariant-mass distributions are given. The c.m. angular distributions and the mean values of the transverse momentum for all final-state particles are shown and discussed. Production of Δ++(1236) accounts for about 30% of the cross section σ(pp→pnπ+)=4.1±0.4 mb. About 50% of the cross section σ(pp→ppπ+π−)=2.4±0.2 mb can be accounted for by Δ++ production. Production of nucleon isobars at 1450, 1520, and 1730 MeV and their subsequent decay into pπ+π− are investigated. Their cross sections, t dependences, and branching ratios are determined, using a one-pion-exchange model (OPEM) for calculating the background distributions. The production of resonances decaying into pπ− at 1236, 1500, and 1690 MeV is seen, and cross sections are given. Resonance production in the ppπ+π−π0 and pnπ+π+π− reactions is studied using background curves calculated with a model based on simple parametrizations of the c.m. momentum distributions. The production of nucleon isobars accounts for nearly 100% of these reactions. For the reactions pp→ppω, ppη, and ppf0, the cross sections found are 0.16±0.03, 0.16±0.07, and 0.10±0.04 mb, respectively, corrected for unobserved decay modes. It is shown that most of the gross features of the pion-production reactions can be explained by the OPEM with the form factors of Ferrari and Selleri.

Cross sections for inelastic scattering of electrons from hydrogen were measured for incident energies from 7 to 17 GeV at scattering angles of 6° to 10° covering a range of squared four-momentum transfers up to 7.4 (GeV/c)2. For low center-of-mass energies of the final hadronic system the cross section shows prominent resonances at low momentum transfer and diminishes markedly at higher momentum transfer. For high excitations the cross section shows only a weak momentum-transfer dependence.

Measurements on large-angle photoproduction of π+ mesons from hydrogen have been made at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center for photon energies between 5 and 15.5 GeV and u values from +0.05 to -1.8 (GeV/c)2. The measured cross section decreased with energy approximately as k−3, showing no shrinkage in this range of u values. Furthermore, it had a smooth u dependence with no sign of a dip at u≃−0.15 (GeV/c)2 as would be expected from nucleon exchange. π−Δ++ production was measured at 5 GeV and shows a rapid decrease with increasing |u|.

Electron-proton elastic scattering cross sections have been measured at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center at four-momentum transfers squared (q 2 ) of 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5and 3.75 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The angular distributions at q 2 = 2.5 and 3.75 (GeV/ c ) 2 are sufficient to provide values of the ratio G E / G M independent of the results from other laboratories. Our results are compatible with scaling, G E (q 2 ) = G M (q 2 )/ μ , within the experimental errors.

Electron scattering cross sections for carbon and oxygen between q = 1 fm −1 and 4 fm −1 are given. The data are analysed in terms of a phenomenological charge distribution and new information concerning the tail and the center of the charge distribution are obtained. The presence of dispersion effects appears to be necessary to explain the cross sections in the first diffraction minimum. The effect of a finite potential and short range correlations on the form factor are discussed.

COMPTON SCATTERING FROM HYDROGEN BETWEEN 5-GeV AND 17-GeV

Measurements have been made on Compton scattering for photon energies between 5 and 17 GeV and t values from -0.06 to -1.1 (GeVc)2. The data were obtained by performing a coincidence between the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center 1.6-GeVc spectrometer and a Lucite shower counter. The scattering appears diffractive out to high t values, but the cross sections seem not to be in good agreement with the prediction of a strict vector-meson-dominance model.

The differential cross sections at 180° for the reactions γ+p→π++n and γ+n→π−+p were measured using a magnetic spectrometer to detect π± mesons. In order to reduce the spread of energy resolution due to the nucleon motion inside the deuteron, a photon difference method was employed with a 50-MeV step for the reaction γ+n→π−+p. The data show structures at the second- and the third-resonance regions for both reactions. A simple phenomenological analysis was made for fitting the data, and the results are compared with those of previous analyses.

Total and differential cross sections are presented for the reactions K − p → K − p and K − p → K o n at 13 points in the c.m. energy range 1915–2168 MeV. An energy-dependent partial-wave analysis is carried out on these data together with the polarisation measurements of Daum et al. [1] and the total cross section measurements [2] within this energy range. The well known Σ(1915), Σ(2030) and Λ(2100) are observed and their resonance parameters measured. Structure is also found in the D 05 and F 07 waves. An SU(3) analysis of the 5 2 + octet, 7 2 + decuplet and 7 2 − singlet gives generally good agreement between theory and experiment except that the elasticity of the Σ(1915) is experimentally rather larger than predicted.

Inelastic electron-Proton Scattering at Large Momentum Transfers

Phys.Rev.D 5 (1972) 528, 1972.
Inspire Record 67123 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.22355

Differential cross sections for electrons scattered inelastically from hydrogen have been measured at 18°, 26°, and 34°. The range of incident energy was 4.5 to 18 GeV, and the range of four-momentum transfer squared was 1.5 to 21 (GeVc)2. With the use of these data in conjunction with previously measured data at 6° and 10°, the contributions from the longitudinal and transverse components of the exchanged photon have been separately determined. The values of the ratio of the photoabsorption cross sections σSσT are found to lie in the range 0 to 0.5. The question of scaling of 2MpW1 and νW2 as a function of ω is discussed, and scaling is verified for a large kinematic range. Also, a new scaling variable which reduces to ω in the Bjorken limit is introduced which extends the scaling region. The behavior of σT and σS is also discussed as a function of ν and q2. Various weighted sum rules of νW2 are evaluated.

We have completed measurements of the differential cross section for γ+p→π0+p, and the asymmetry with polarized photons, for incident photon energies from 4 to 18 GeV and momentum transfers between t=−0.1 and −1.4 (GeV/c)2. The experiment was performed at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, using the SLAC 1.6-GeV/c spectrometer to analyze protons recoiling from a hydrogen target. For the cross-section measurements a normal collimated bremsstrahlung beam was used. For the asymmetry measurements the polarized photons were produced by coherent bremsstrahlung from a diamond crystal, and a coincidence was required between the recoil proton and one of the π0 decay photons in a shower counter.

Differential cross sections have been measured for nucleon-isobar production and elastic scattering in p−p interactions from 6.2 to 29.7 GeVc in the laboratory angle range 8<θsc<265 mrad. N*' s at 1236, 1410, 1500, 1690, and 2190 MeV were observed. Computer fits to the mass spectra under varying assumptions of resonance and background shapes show that conclusions on t and s dependence are only slightly affected despite typical variations in absolute normalization of ± 35%. Logarithmic t slopes in the small- |t| range are ∼15 (GeVc)−2 for the N*(1410), ∼5 (GeVc)−2 for the N*'s at 1500, 1690, and 2190 MeV, and ∼9 (GeVc)−2 for elastic scattering. Also for the small- |t| data, cross sections for N*'s at 1410, 1500, 1690, and 2190 MeV and for elastic scattering vary only slightly with Pinc consistent with the dominance of Pomeranchuk exchange and with diffraction dissociation. A fit of N*(1690) total cross sections to the form σ∝P−n gives n=0.34±0.06, while for elastic scattering n=0.20±0.05. For the N*(1690) the effective Regge trajectory has the slope αeff′(0)=0.38±0.17. When compared with N* production in π−, K−, and p¯ beams these data also agree with approximate factorization of the Pomeranchuk trajectory. N*(1236) cross sections are consistent with other measurements at similar momenta. For −t>1 (GeVc)−2, elastic scattering cross sections decrease approximately as Pinc−2, and they and N*(1500)− and N*(1690)− production cross sections have t slopes consistent with 1.6 (GeVc)−2.

Electron-proton elastic-scattering cross sections have been measured at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center for four-momentum transfers squared q 2 from 1.0 to 25.0 (GeVc)2. The electric (GEp) and magnetic (GMp) form factors of the proton were not separated, since angular distributions were not measured at each q 2. However, values for GMp were derived assuming various relations between GEp and GMp. Several theoretical models for the behavior of the proton magnetic form factor at high values of q 2 are compared with the data.

Total cross sections for both of the reactions were found to be 51.2 ± 1.6 mb and 9.1 ± 0.6 mb, respectively. Differential cross sections are well explained by the phenomenological theory given by Bryan and Phillips.

We have measured the differential cross section for small angle p−p scattering from 25 to 200 GeV incident energy and in the momentum transfer range 0.015<|t|<0.080 (GeVc)2. We find that the slope of the forward diffraction peak, b(s), increases with energy and can be fitted by the form b(s)=b0+2α′ lns, where b0=8.3±1.3 and α′=0.28±0.13 (GeVc)−2. Such dependence is compatible with the data existing both at higher and lower energies. We have also obtained the energy dependence of the p−p total cross section in the energy range from 48 to 196 GeV. Within our errors which are ± 1.1 mb the total cross section remains constant.

We report our first measurements of the polarization in the elastic scattering of negative pions from polarized protons at an incident pion momentum of 40 GeV/ c . The momentum-transfer region covered was 0.08 < | t | < 1.3 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The angular distribution of the polarization exhibits a first minimum of ∼ − 5% and the well-known zero around t ≈ − 0.6 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The energy variation of the first minimum (at around t = − 0.2) may be expressed in a simple form, P avr = −(0.48±0.06) s −0.52±0.05 .

The π−+p→π0+n differential cross section at 180° has been measured for 52 values of π− momentum from 1.8 to 6.0 GeV/c using a constant-geometry detection system. The average statistical uncertainty is ∼5% and the systematic uncertainty is ∼10%. The details of the experiment and the data analysis are discussed. The data are compared with those of other experiments with which they are generally in agreement. One set of data disagrees with those presented here and a possible reason for this is discussed. A five-parameter fit of the predictions of a dual-resonance model to our data gave excellent agreement. The differential cross sections at 180° for π±p elastic scattering have been compiled and the moduli and relative phase of the T=12 and T=32 pion-nucleon s- and u-channel amplitudes (|A12|, |A32|, and cosδ) have a minimum at u=0.4 GeV/c and, in the s channel, a corresponding minimum at s=2.2 GeV/c.

The polarization of recoil protons from proton Compton scattering has been measured at an angle of 90° c.m.s. in the region of the second nucleon resonance. The scattered photons were detected by a telescope which consisted of a lead plate converter, scintillation-counter hodoscopes and a Ćerenkov counter, The angles and momenta of recoil protons were analyzed by a magnet with four spark chambers. The polarization of protons was obtained from the asymmetry in the elastic scattering of protons on carbon in a spark chamber.

The polarization of scattered antiproton in\(\bar pp\) elastic scattering has been measured at the kinetic energy of 220MeV by means of double scattering in a bubble chamber. The polarizations obtained are 0.28±0.11, 0.46±0.12, 0.51±0.19 and 0.38±0.31 at the scattering angles 28°, 42°, 56° and 73° in the c.m. system, respectively.
