Using the colliding beam machine, VEPP-2, the excitation curve of the ø-meson resonance was investigated in the three main decay modes. The resonance parameters obtained are the width, the total cross-section and the branching ratios. Namely: Γ = (4.67 ± 0.42) Mev B ( K + K − ) = (54.0 ± 3,4) % σ o = (3.96 ± 0.35) μB B ( K o s K O L ) = (25.7 ±3,0) % B ( e + e − = (2,81 ± 0.25) × 10 −4 B ( π + π − π o ) = (20.3 ± 4,2) %

Using the electron-position storage ring VEPP-2 an experiment has been performed in which the cross-sections of the reactions e + e − → π + π − and e + e − →K + K − were measured in the energy regi on 1.18–1.34 GeV. The experimental values of the formfactors lie higher than curves extrapolated from the ϱ- and ϕ-meson region.

We report on a measurement of the ratio of the differential cross sections for W and Z boson production as a function of transverse momentum in proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. This measurement uses data recorded by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron in 1994-1995. It represents the first investigation of a proposal that ratios between W and Z observables can be calculated reliably using perturbative QCD, even when the individual observables are not. Using the ratio of differential cross sections reduces both experimental and theoretical uncertainties, and can therefore provide smaller overall uncertainties in the measured mass and width of the W boson than current methods used at hadron colliders.

The Indiana Silicon Sphere 4π detector has been used to measure light-charged particles and intermediate-mass fragments (IMFs) emitted in the 18–4.8 GeV He3+natAg, Au197 reactions. Ejectile multiplicity and total event kinetic energy distributions scale systematically with projectile energy and target mass, except for the Agnat target at 3.6 and 4.8 GeV. For this system, a saturation in deposition energy is indicated by the data, suggesting the upper projectile energy for stopping has been reached. Maximum deposition energies of ∼950 MeV for the Agnat target and ∼1600 MeV for the Au197 target are inferred from the data. The results also demonstrate the importance of accounting for fast cascade processes in defining the excitation energy of the targetlike residue. Correlations between various observables and the average IMF multiplicity indicate that the total thermal energy and total observed charge provide useful gauges of the excitation energy of the fragmenting system. Comparison of the experimental distributions with intranuclear cascade predictions shows qualitative agreement. © 1996 The American Physical Society.

Charged jet evolution and the underlying event in proton - anti-proton collisions at 1.8-TeV

The growth and development of “charged particle jets” produced in proton-antiproton collisions at 1.8 TeV  are studied over a transverse momentum range from 0.5 GeV/c to 50 GeV/c. A variety of leading (highest transverse momentum) charged jet observables are compared with the QCD Monte Carlo models HERWIG, ISAJET, and PYTHIA. The models describe fairly well the multiplicity distribution of charged particles within the leading charged jet, the size of the leading charged jet, the radial distribution of charged particles and transverse momentum around the leading charged jet direction, and the momentum distribution of charged particles within the leading charged jet. The direction of the leading “charged particle jet” in each event is used to define three regions of η−φ space. The “toward” region contains the leading “charged particle jet,” while the “away” region, on the average, contains the away-side jet. The “transverse” region is perpendicular to the plane of the hard 2-to-2 scattering and is very sensitive to the “underlying event” component of the QCD Monte Carlo models. HERWIG, ISAJET, and PYTHIA with their default parameters do not describe correctly all the properties of the “transverse” region.

The production of\(\bar D\) mesons in neutroncarbon interactions at 40–70 GeV/c has been investigated. The\(\bar D\) mesons were detected via the hadronic decay modes\(\bar D^0\to K^{* + } (892)\pi ^ -\) andD−→K*+(892)π−π−. In the kinematical regionxF>0.5 andpT<1 GeV/c the following inclusive cross sections were measured:\(\sigma _{\bar D^0 }= (28 \pm 14)\mu b\) and\(\sigma _{D^ -}= (28 \pm 13)\mu b\) per carbon nucleus. The invariant longitudinal momentum spectra can be described by (1−x)N with\(N_{\bar D^0 }= 1.1 \pm 0.5 \pm 0.4\) and\(N_{D^ -}= 0.8 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.4\) The transverse momentum spectra were parametrized by exp (−BpT2) with\(B_{\bar D^0 }= (1.2_{ - 0.9}^{ + 1.1} )({{GeV} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{GeV} c}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} c})^{ - 2} \) and\(B_{D^ -}= (1.8_{ - 1.0}^{ + 1.3} )({{GeV} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{GeV} c}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} c})^{ - 2} \).
