Inclusive and semi-inclusive production of Λ and\(\bar \Lambda\) inK+p interactions is studied at an incident momentum of 70 GeV/c. Cross sections and single particle distributions are presented and compared with data at lower energies. Scaling is observed between 32 and 70 GeV/c in the Feynmanx variable in the target and the beam fragmentation regions for Λ and\(\bar \Lambda\) inclusive production respectively. An increase of Λ (\(\bar \Lambda\)) production is observed in the beam (target) fragmentation regions, whereas the data at 70 and 32 GeV/c are reasonably close in the central region. The dependence of the Λ(\(\bar \Lambda\)) polarization as a function ofx is measured and found to be in general agreement with the results at 32 GeV/c. The (Λ\(\bar \Lambda\)) pair production cross section increases significantly from 32 to 70 GeV/c. The Λ and\(\bar \Lambda\) production associated with an identified proton is also studied.

Results are reported concerning the charged-particle multiplicity distribution obtained in an exposure of the high-resolution hydrogen bubble chamber LEBC to a beam of 800 GeV protons at the Fermilab MPS. This is the first time that such data have been available at this energy. The distribution of the number n ch of charged particles produced in inelastic interactions obeys KNO-scaling. The average multiplicity is 〈 n ch 〉 = 10.26±0.15. For n ch ⩾8 the data can be well fitted to a negative binomial. The difference between the overall experimental multiplicity distribution and that resulting from the latter fit is in agreement with the contribution expected from diffractive processes.

We present the results of a search for charm F mesons in 360 GeV/ c π − p interactions. Several methods have been used; all yield no evidence for the F and are interpreted as 90% confidence level cross section upper limits.

The inclusive cross sections for forward D meson production at s =26 GeV in π − p interactions have been measured to be: σ(π − p → D 0 / D 0 + X ) x F >0 = (10.1±2.2)μ b , σ(π − p → D ±+ X ) x F >0 = (5.7±1.6)μ b . The distribution in x F for all D and for x F >0 has the form d σ/ d x F =107 −37 +39 (1−x F ) 7.5 −1.7 +2.5 +5.4 −3.8 +6.0 (1−x F ) 0.7 −0.7 1.0 μ b , with evidence for leading D production. The p T 2 distribution is exponential with slope parameter [−1.18 −0.16 +0.18 ]( GeV / c) −2 . The data are compared with predictions from first-order quark/gluon fusion calculations.

Theπ0 andη0 production is studied inπ−p interactions at 360 GeV/c. The cross section forπ0 production in the forward hemisphere (X>0) isσ(π0)=(49.7 ± 1.0 ± 1.1) mb and for η withX>0.1,Nch>2,σ(η0)=(3.1 ± 0.5) mb. The ratio of theπ0 toη0 cross section forX>0.1,Nch>2 isσ(π0)/σ(η0). Results on FeynmanX andpT distributions are presented. The elastic and inelastic\(\bar p\)p cross sections at 70 GeV/c have been determined in an experiment performed at CERN using BEBC equipped with a TST. The topological cross sections were measured and the moments of the inelastic multiplicity distribution are 〈nc〉=6.16±0.09, 〈nc〉/D=2.04±0.05 andf2cc=2.97±0.03. The average number of Dalitz pairs per inelastic event is (3.12±0.09)×10−2. Assuming that these all arise from π0 decay the average π0 multiplicity is\(\langle n_{\pi ^0 } \rangle= 2.71 \pm 0.14\). The\(\bar p\)p−pp cross section differences lead to an annihilation cross section σA = 4.42±0.41 mb and the moments of the annihilation multiplicty distribution are 〈nA〉=8.0±0.3, 〈nA〉/D=2.5±0.2 andf2A−−=−1.4±0.3. An independent check of σA was made by investigating fast forward charged and neutral secondary interactions in the TST and in the surrounding neon-hydrogen mixture, and gives a value σA = 5.0±1.6 mb. The ratio of fast\(\bar n\) to\(\bar p\) production in non-annihilation interactions at 70 GeV/c is found to be 0.45±0.11.

Inclusive charged pion production is studied in an exposure of BEBC, filled with hydrogen, to an incidentK+ beam of 70 GeV/c. Total cross sections for pion production and inclusive longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions of π−'s and of positive particles are presented and compared with data at lower energies. Earlier evidence for scaling in the fragmentation regions is confirmed. The central region π− cross section increases proportionally topLAB−1/4; positive particles show almost no energy dependence atx=0. Particle ratios π+/π− are studied as a function ofx andy* and a comparison with 70 GeV/cK−p data is made. Analysis of structure functions for (ππ) pairs and of particle production associated with π± triggers at large |x| in the context of quark/parton models, provides qualitative evidence for the diquark-quark structure of the proton.
