Small momentum transfer pi+ production with linearly polarized photons

Previous measurements of the cross section asymmetry for single π + production on protons with linearly polarized photons of 3.4 GeV have been extended to momentum transfers within the forward peak, i.e. − = 0.0026, 0.006 and 0.01 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The results are in good agreement with pion exchange models.

ASYMMETRY IN pi+ PHOTOPRODUCTION FROM A POLARIZED TARGET AT 5-GeV AND 16-GeV

We have measured the asymmetry of the cross section for γp→π+n from a polarized target at 5 and 16 GeV. The range of four-momentum transfer was 0.02<~−t<~1.0 GeV2. The π+ mesons were produced in a polarized butanol target and detected with the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center 20−GeVc spectrometer. A sizable asymmetry was found at both 5 and 16 GeV, a typical value being -0.6 near −t=0.3 GeV2. A small amount of data on the asymmetry of other photoproduction processes was also obtained.

Measurements of the polarisation of the recoil proton in elastic electron proton scattering at q-squared=1.3, 1.5 and 1.9(gev/c)squared

An experiment has been carried out to determine the imaginary part of the two-photon exchange amplitude by measuring the polarisation of the recoil proton in elastic electron-proton scattering. The polirisation was found to be −0.006 ± 0.030 at q 2 = 1.3 (GeV/ c ) 2 , +0.052 ± 0.55 at 1.5 (GeV/ c ) 2 and +0.065 ± 0.087 at 1.9 (GeV/ c ) 2 .

pi--p Elastic Scattering at 310 MeV: Differential Cross Section and Recoil-Proton Polarization

The differential cross section and recoil-proton polarization in π−−p elastic scattering at 310-MeV incident-pion energy has been measured. The differential cross section was measured at 28 angles in the angular region 25<~θlab<~160 deg. The fractional rms errors were typically 3%. The reaction was observed by counting the scattered pions emerging from a liquid-hydrogen target with a counter telescope consisting of scintillation and Čerenkov counters. Simultaneously, the recoil-proton polarization was measured at four angles in the angular region 114<θc.m.<146 deg. The recoil protons from the liquid-hydrogen target were scattered from a carbon target and the left-right asymmetry was measured. Scintillation counters were used throughout to detect the particles.

Polarization of the Recoil Proton from the Neutral Photoproduction at 800 and 910 Mev

The measurements on the polarization of the recoil protons from the process γ+p→π0+p have been extended to higher γ-ray energies, at 90° in the center-of-mass system. We have found at 910 Mev a polarization, P=−0.45±0.07; at 800 Mev, P=−0.42±0.10. The rather high values of P agree with the hypothesis that the neutral photoproduction in the 500-1000 Mev range can be described by the well-known three resonant states, and strongly indicate that the second and third resonance have opposite parity. The probable quantum numbers are: T=12, J=32, D pion wave for the second resonance; T=12, J=52, F wave for the third resonance.
