MEASUREMENT OF THE XI- P ELASTIC CROSS-SECTION AT 102-GEV/C AND 135-GEV/C

TheΞ-p differential elastic cross section has been measured in the SPS hyperon beam at 102 and 135 GeV/c. In the range 0.01<−<0.42(GeV/c)2, thet distributions are found to be compatible with the formA exp(Bt) whereB is 7.7±0.4(GeV/c)−2 at 102 GeV/c and 8.2 ±0.5(GeV/c)−2 at 135 GeV/c. The corresponding total elastic cross sections areσel=4.9±0.7 mb andσel=5.6±0.9 mb, respectively. These results are compared with the predictions of phenomenological models.

EXISTENCE OF XI RESONANCES ABOVE 2-GEV

Ξ*− production was studied in the reaction K−+p→K+slow+X− at 5 GeV/c. The slow K+ was electronically detected, while the X− was observed as a missing mass, thus allowing for observation of all Ξ* independent of decay mode. The observed Ξ states were Ξ(1320), Ξ(1530), Ξ(1820), Ξ(2030), Ξ(2250), Ξ(2370), and Ξ(2500). These data establish and confirm the existence of Ξ(2250) and indicate a peculiar production-cross-section behavior for the Ξ*(2370).

Measurement of the Rate of Increase of Neutrino Cross-Sections with Energy

The energy dependence of the cross section for neutrino- and antineutrino-nucleon charged-current interactions has been determined from data taken in Fermilab's dichromatic neutrino beam. σνE=(0.669±0.003±0.024)×10−38 cm2/GeV and σν¯E=(0.340±0.003±0.02)×10−38 cm2/GeV are found. These results are higher than some previous measurements.

The branching fraction for the decay of the ϒ(1S) into τ paris has been measured to be (3.4±0.4±0.4)%. This result agrees with the previously measured branching ratio of the decay into muon pairs.

A Measurement of the Leptonic Branching Ratios of the $\Upsilon$ (1s), $\Upsilon$ (2s), and $\Upsilon$ (3s)

Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, the authors have measured the leptonic branching fractions, Bμμ, of the ϒ(1S), ϒ(2S), and ϒ(3S) to be 2.7±0.3±0.3%, 1.9±1.3±0.5%, and 3.3±1.3±0.7%, respectively. Combining these values of Bμμ with previous measurements of the leptonic widths of these resonances, the authors find the total widths of the ϒ(1S), ϒ(2S), and ϒ(3S) to be 48±4±4, 27±17±6, and 13±4±3 keV.

Inclusive production of (D0, D¯0) and D± mesons have been observed in e+e− annihilation at 29 GeV. The signals correspond to R values of R(D0+D¯0)=3.25±1.2 and R(D++D−)=1.35±0.6. D*± production is also observed via the process D*+→D0π+ and its charge conjugate. The D and D* production rates are compared.

Elastic Scattering of $\pi^{\pm}$ and $K^{\pm}$ on Protons at 100-GeV/c and 200-GeV/c

Data are presented on elastic πp and Kp scattering for values of −t up to 2.5 and 3.5 (GeV/c)2 at incident momenta of 100 and 200 GeV/c, respectively. All of the cross sections are found to be nearly identical, although there is some momentum dependence of the π+p data; a small systematic difference observed between pion and kaon data cannot be explained by geometrical scaling.

CHARACTERISTICS OF NEUTRAL CURRENT INTERACTIONS INDUCED BY NEUTRINOS

The ratio of neutral-current to charged-current interactions is measured to be 0.30±0.03 for isoscalar targets, in good agreement with the results of previous experiments. Two independent methods are employed for isolating neutral-current events, one based on hadronic interactions, and the other on the momentum transverse to the hadron shower. The ratio of neutral-current interactions on neutrons to those on protons is measured to be 1.08±0.19.

STUDY OF A2 PRODUCTION IN THE REACTION PI- P ---> K0 K- P AT 50-GEV/C, 100-GEV/C, AND 175-GEV/C

The reaction π−p→K0K−p has been measured from 50 to 175 GeV/c. The production characteristics of the A2 have been analyzed. We find spin and t dependence similar to lower energies, but the cross section falls rapidly with energy. In a Regge description of π−p→A2−p our data imply a rather small Pomeron-exchange component.
