Measurement of neutron-proton charge exchange scattering at 8, 19 and 24 gev/c

The t -dependence of the differential cross-section for elastic neutron-proton charge exchange scattering has been measured at 8, 19.2 and 24 GeV/ c . The extremely narrow peak in the forward direction, previously observed for momenta up to 8 GeV/ c , presists at the higher momenta, and the t -dependence shows practically no change with energy. Approximate values of the absolute cross-section were also determined for these momenta.

Further evidence for the decay mode x(0) ---> gamma gamma and determination of the branching ratio x(0) ---> gamma gamma/ x(0) ---> total

41 ± 8 events of the type X 0 → γγ have been observed in a study of the reaction π − p → n(X 0 → γγ ) at 1.6 GeV/ c incident π -momentum. This provides further evidence to our previous observation of this new X 0 decay mode and allows the determination of the branching ratio Γ(X 0 →γγ) Γ(X 0 → total =(1.7 ± 0.4)%. The theoretical implications of this result are discussed.

π − p → π 0 n and π − p → η n differential cross sections have been measured in nine nuclei ranging from hydrogen to lead at a 7.82 GeV/ c beam momentum and in a range of t going from 0 to −2 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The results can be understood in the framework of the Glauber theory which allows in addition a determination of the π 0 and η total cross sections on nucleons.

The annihilation process p anti-p ---> 2pi+ 2pi- pi0 at 2.5 gev/c

Substantial production of the resonances ϱ, f and ω has been observed in this reaction. In contrast with the channel p p → 2π + 2π − , associated production of resonances was found to occur. The behaviour of the associated production of ω-mesons with other resonances is shown to be consistent with some very simple assumptions. Alternative methods of displaying data for p p → ππω are discussed; it is shown that the longitudinal phase plot for this reaction is unlike that obtained for any previously reported reaction. Reasonable agreement for the behaviour of this channel is found with the multiperipheral model of Chan, Łoskiewicz and Allison.

Joint decay distributions have been studied in the reaction K + p → K ∗o (1420)Δ ++ at 5.0 GeV/ c in the transversity spin reference frame. Two alternative spin-parity assignments 2 + and 3 − for the K ∗ resonance have been considered and a comparison with the quark-model predictions has been made. The predictions of the quark model are equally well satisfied by the experimental results for both the 2 + and 3 − spin-parity assignments.

Coherent k- d interactions at 12.6 gev/c

We report on coherent interactions in a 2.5 event/μb K − d exposure. The predominant channel studied is K − d → K − π + gp − d (415 events). We find strong Q- and L-production in the (K ππ ) system. The production mechanism determines I = 1 2 for both enhancements and a spin-parity in the series 0 − , 1 + ,2 − … . A spin-parity analysis shows the Q to be a 1 + object, while the L is 1 + or 2 − , although a higher spin cannot be excluded. The cross sections for Q and L production and other final states are presented.

K- p elastic scattering at 10-GeV/c

Results are presented on elastic scattering of 10.1 GeV/ c K − mesons on protons, based on a sample of 16 261 kinematically-fitted bubble-chamber events. The differential cross section is given over the | t |- range of 0.06 to 2.5 GeV 2 and is fitted with the expressions a e bt , A e Bt + Ct 2 and ( P e Qt + Re St ) over various intervals of t . The results are compared with those of other experiments at nearby energies. Upper limits of | α | < 0.28 and σ B < 0.4 μ b (both at a 90% confidence level) are given for the ratio of real to imaginary part of the forward-scattering amplitude and the backward-elastic-scattering cross section, respectively.

Lambda p interactions in momentum range 300 to 1500 mev/c

A sample of approximately 250 Λp interactions has been obtained in the Λ-hyperon momentum range of about 300 to 500 MeV/ c . An enhanced Λ-hyperon production rate was obtained by exposing an internally-mounted platinum target to the incident 1.5 GeV/ c meson beam. Cross sections and angular distributions are obtained for the reactions: Λ p → Λ p, Λ p → Σ o p and Λ p → Λ p π o . In the elastic channel, no strong evidence is seen near the Σ o p threshold for the presence of a 3 S 1 resonance, which has been reported, although there is some evidence for a small enhancement in this mass region. There is evidence for the presence of P-waves and probably also D-waves above about 800 MeV/ c , but not below this momentum.

A study of k pi pi states produced in 10 gev/c k+ p interactions

We present an analysis of the K ππ system produced in 10 GeV/ c K + p interactions. We show that the low-mass enchancement between 1.2 and 1.4 GeV/ c 2 on the K ππ mass spectrum is predominantly 1 + throughout, give the relative amplitudes for the decay of this system into K ∗ (890) π and K ρ , and offer new evidence for the presence of two 1 + resonances in this mass region.
