A measurement of ΔσL(np), the difference between neutron-proton total cross sections for pure longitudinal spin states, is described. Data were taken at LAMPF for five neutron beam kinetic energies: 484, 568, 634, 720, and 788 MeV. The statistical errors are in the range of 0.64–1.35 mb. Various sources of systematic effects were investigated and are described. Overall systematic errors are estimated to be on the order of 0.5 mb and include an estimate for the uncertainty in the neutron beam polarization. The ΔσL results are consistent with previous results from PSI and Saclay. These data, when combined with other results and fitted to a Breit-Wigner curve, are consistent with an elastic I=0 resonance with mass 2214±15 (stat) ±6 (syst) MeV and width 75±21±12 MeV. Because of a lack of ΔσT(np) data between 500 and 800 MeV, it is not possible to differentiate between a singlet or coupled-triplet partial wave being responsible.

The reactions γp→K+ Λ and γp→K+ Σ0 have been measured with the multiparticle detector system SAPHIR at ELSA in Bonn. Besides the differential cross sections the Λ polarization and, for the first time, the Σ0 polarization have been determined in a photon induced reaction. All data are presented as functions of the photon energy (from threshold up to 1.47 GeV) and of the kaon production angle (0°–180°). The polarization of both Λ and Σ0 is substantial at all energies and varies strongly with the production angle.

Measurement of the double spin asymmetry A-LL for inclusive multi gamma pair production with 200-GeV/c polarized proton beam and polarized proton target

The invariant double-differential cross section, E 1 E 2 d 6 σ / d p 3 1 d p 3 2 , and the double-spin asymmetry, A LL , for inclusive multi-γ pair production in which γ-rays came from neutral mesons were measured with a 200 GeV / c longitudinally-polarized proton beam and a longitudinally-polarized proton target. Most of the multi-γ pairs comes from two-jet type events which are sensitive to partonic interaction. The A LL values were found to be consistent with zero. The invariant double-differential cross section for inclusive π 0 π 0 production was also measured. These measured cross sections are consistent with LUND Monte Carlo simulations. Using the LUND Monte Carlo simulation package with the Carlitz-Kaur model of spin dependent distribution functions of valence quarks, the A LL values have been compared with theoretical predictions of gluon polarization, ΔG / G . The results put restrictions on the size of ΔG / G in the region of 0.05 ⪅ x ⪅ 0.35.

We study the polarization with respect to the normal to the production plane for a very clean sample of 27217 Λ 0 / Λ 0 hyperons produced in 230 GeV/ c π −  Cu interactions. In general we find P(Λ 0 ) ≈ P( Λ 0 ap; 0 except for x F > 0, p T > 1GeV/ c where P ( Λ 0 ) = −0.28±0.09(stat.)±0.02(syst.).

Polarization of $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ Produced by 800 GeV Protons

We have measured the polarization of Λ and Λ hyperons produced by 800 GeV protons on a Be target at a fixed targeting angle of 4.8 mrad. Comparison with previous data at 400 GeV production energy and twice the targeting angle shows no significant energy dependence for the Λ polarization. This is in striking contrast to the energy dependence found for σ + and Ξ − polarizations. We find no evidence for Λ polarization at 800 GeV.

We utilize the angle and momentum resolution of our apparatus to study the polarization of 375 GeV/c Σ+ hyperons produced by 800 GeV/c protons incident on a Cu target. By examining in detail two of our high statistics data samples, we find evidence for structure in the pt dependence of Σ+ polarization and are able to extract the xF dependence of the Σ+ polarization and compare it with xF behavior in the Λ0 and Ξ− systems.

Polarization of $\Sigma^+$ and $\bar{\Sigma^-}$ Hyperons Produced by 800-GeV/c Protons

We have mesured the polarization of 375-GeV/c Σ+ and Σ¯ − hyperons produced by 800-GeV/c protons incident on a Cu target. We find that the Σ+ polarization rises with increasing pt to a maximum of 16% at pt=1.0 GeV/c and then decreases to 10% at pt=1.8 GeV/c. We compare this Σ+ polarization with data at lower energies. The Σ¯ − polarization has been measured for the first time. It has the same sign as the Σ+ but smaller magnitude in a similar kinematical region.

Polarization transfer in quasifree (p, n) reactions at 495 MeV

Inspire Record 369336 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.26026

A complete set of polarization-transfer observables has been measured for quasifree (p→,n→) reactions on H2, C12, and Ca40 at a bombarding energy of 495 MeV and a laboratory scattering angle of 18°. The data span an energy-loss range from 0 to 160 MeV, with a corresponding momentum transfer range of qc.m.=1.7–1.9 fm−1. The laboratory observables are used to construct partial cross sections proportional to the nonspin response and three orthogonal spin responses. These results are compared to the transverse spin response measured in deep inelastic electron scattering and to nuclear responses based on the random phase approximation. The polarization observables for all three targets are remarkably similar and reveal no evidence for an enhancement of the spin-longitudinal nuclear response relative to the spin-transverse response. These results suggest the need for substantial modifications to the standard form assumed for the residual particle-hole interaction.

First measurement of the depolarization parameter D(onon) of the anti-p p ---> anti-n n charge exchange reaction

Birsa, R. ; Bradamante, F. ; Bressan, A. ; et al.
Phys.Lett.B 302 (1993) 517-522, 1993.
Inspire Record 354498 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.28944

The depolarization parameter D 0 n 0 n in the charge-exchange reaction p p ↑→ n n ↑ has been measured for the first time at the CERN Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) at 875 MeV/ c antiproton beam momentum, in the forward hemisphere. The measured values of D 0 n 0 n are always smaller than ±0.3, indicating that the two-spin amplitudes dominate the scattering matrix as suggested by the meson exchange potential models.
