Inclusive π− distributions from 205-GeV/c pp interactions, covering the full range of longitudinal and transverse momenta, have been obtained using the 30-in. hydrogen bubble chamber at the National Accelerator Laboratory. These data provide new evidence for scaling in the fragmentation region and for a plateau in the central region of rapidity. The 90°-c.m. invariant cross section varies as exp[−(10±2)PT2] in the range PT2<~0.1 (GeV/c)2.

From analysis of V0 events observed in an exposure of the National Accelerator Laboratory 30-in. bubble chamber to 303−GeVc protons, we obtain these results: (1) 〈nπ0〉 rises approximately linearly with n-, implying strong coupling of neutral and charged pions, while 〈nKS0〉 is less coupled to n; (2) γ, KS0, and Λ0 production cross sections are approaching a scaling limit by 303 GeVc; (3) within the limited statistics, dσdy is flat in the central region for KS0 and low-multiplicity γ events.

In a 35 000-picture exposure of the Fermilab 30-in. hydrogen bubble chamber to a 300-GeV/c proton beam 1863 neutral V0's were measured. In an exposure of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory 30-in. bubble chamber to a beam of 205-GeV/c protons, we have determined total and differential cross sections for the inclusive reactions p+p→γ+X, π0+X, (K0K¯0)+X, Λ+X. Invariant distributions in x indicate that for γ, K0, Λ production, scaling has set in somewhere before 69 GeV. The γ differential cross sections are consistent with the relation dσdPu(π0)=12[dσdPu(π+)+dσdPu(π−)] for all Pu, where Pu=PL* or P⊥. The differential cross sections for Λ and K0 production indicate a break in the distribution at |t−tmin|=1.5(GeVc)2 and 0.5(GeVc)2, respectively. The Λ polarization is found to be - (0.25 ± 0.26), consistent with zero throughout the x region.

In an exposure of the Argonne National Laboratory 12-foot hydrogen bubble chamber to a beam of 12.4-GeV/c protons, we have measured the total and differential cross sections for the inclusive reactions p+p→γ+X, π0+X, K0+X, and Λ+X, as well as estimates for the inclusive η and Σ0 cross sections. We present the average number of π0, K0, and Λ as a function of the associated charge multiplicity. We observe that the average charge multiplicity in pp collisions is the same whether or not a π0, K0, or Λ is also produced in the interaction. Invariant cross sections are presented as a function of PT2 and x, the Feynman scaling variable. The π0 differential cross sections are consistent with the relation dσdP(π0)=12[dσdP(π+)+dσdP(π−)] for all pion momenta P. The differential cross section for Λ production indicates a break in the distribution of |t−tmin|=1.4 (GeV/c)2. The polarization of the Λ's is found to be consistent with zero for all values of x.

We have done an inclusive study of ϱ 0 production in π − p interactions at 15 GeV/ c . Evidence for two different production mechanisms, in addition to the known quasi two-body processes, is presented: production of ϱ 0 's in the central region of rapidity similar to the “pionization” region seen in the inclusive studies of pions; and forward production in the beam dissociation region of rapidity. Cross sections and rapidity distributions for the ϱ 0 are given inclusively and by topology, and the results are compared with similar studies at other energies and with other incident particles. The production of K S 0 , Λ and Λ is measured in π + p reactions at 16 GeV/ c . The total strange particle cross section is found to be 4.0 ± 0.3 mb, about 20% of the inelastic cross section. Cross sections for single strange particles and for strange particle pairs are determined, both inclusively and as functions of the charged multiplicity. Relative production rates for different strange particle combinations are compared with the prediction of the isospin statistical model. Inclusive spectra for single particles are studied and it is found the K S 0 are produced mostly in the forward hemisphere, most probably by fragmentation of the incident pion into K K π . The Λ are mostly backwards, probably deriving from fragmentation of the proton into ΛK pairs. The Λ tend to be produced forwards, but evidence is found for central Λ Λ production. Distributions in rapidity of the Λ particles from π + p interactions are compared in terms of the factorisation hypothesis. Results are given on the Λ transversal polarisation.

Observation of 16 μ + μ − pairs of invariant mass greater than 2.7 GeV/ c 2 in the reaction pp → μ + μ − + anything at s = 52 GeV at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR) is reported. These events can be interpreted as originating from J(3.1) decay into μ + μ − . Their p T distribution suggests a hadronic production. The cross section for J production is given and compared to the cross section for single lepton production. We conclude that J(3.1) production cannot fully account for single lepton production.

Inclusive production of Λ and Λ in K + p interactions is studied at incident momenta of 8.2 and 16.0 GeV/ c . Cross sections and single-particle distributions are presented, the correlation between longitudinal and transverse momentum is investigated, and the dependence of average charge multiplicity on missing mass measured. For Λ production, early scaling is observed in the target fragmentation region when the data are presented in terms of ( M 2 - M th 2 )/ s and t , where M th is the threshold value of the missing mass M . Furthermore, a triple-Regge analysis in these variable yields an effective exchange trajectory which passes through the K, Q and L mesons. There is evidence for beam fragmentation in Λ and Λ production, but the contributions seem not to be dominant in the fragmentation region. Nevertheless, the parameter values in a triple-Regge description are estimated, and together with those for target fragmentation in Λ production, provide a complete description of the fragmentation contributions to the two reactions. Integration of the resultant distribution functions over the complete Chew-Low plot yields fragmentation cross sections increasing approximately as log s ; in addition the observed features of the x , p L and p T 2 projections and of the p L - p T correlation are well-described in the fragmentation regions. Central production contributions are isolated by subtracting the calculated fragmentation distributions

The inclusive spectra for p p collisions at 22.4 GeV/ c are investigated. We show that the transverse momentum distributions resemble those in high-energy pp interactions and discuss the influence of annihilation processes on the p T 2 distributions. The invariant inclusive cross section for pions in the central region is found to be 28 ± 1 mb. A charge asymmetry is indicated by the y ∗ spectrum in the central region, the asymmetry parameter having the value 0.15 ± 0.01. Finally, we estimate the upper limit of the diffraction dissociation of the beam particle to be 3.68 −0.15 +0.45 mb.

The production of η(550) and ω(780) mesons is studied in π ± p interactions at 16 GeV/ c and K − p interactions at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . Cross sections for exclusive channels are presented, and for the π + p data differential cross sections are given for quasi-inclusive production where the η or ω is required to be accompanied by charged particles only. Close similarities are observed between η, ω and also ϱ 0 (770) production in terms of longitudinal and transverse variables. By a rough estimate, the η, ω and ϱ 0 inclusive yields are found to be in the ratio 0.32 : 0.85 : 1, respectively, for 16 GeV/ c π + p collisions. For non-peripheral production we estimate this same ratio to be 0.34 : 0.9 : 1.

At the CERN intersecting storage ring the inclusive differential cross section [dσdσ]y=1 has been measured for f0, g0, K*0(1420), and K¯*0(1420) production: We obtain 0.58±0.05 mb, 0.09±0.05 mb, 38±15 μb, and 26±13 μb, respectively. The corresponding total inclusive cross sections are estimated to be 2.62±0.26 mb, 0.40±0.22 mb, 154±60 μb, and 107±52 μb, respectively. We present results on inclusive Δ ++ (1236) production in 100 GeV/ c p p interactions. In the region | t | < 1 GeV 2 we find a cross section of 1.29 ± 0.15 mb. Comparisons with pp interactions at high energies show Δ ++ production in pp and p p interactions to be very similar. The decay angular distributions of the Δ ++ are consistent with production predominantly through pion-exchange and the properties of the system recoiling from the Δ ++ are similar to those of real π + p interactions. However, the p π + background is found to show qualitatively similar behaviour. In contrast to the indications of Δ ++ production through pion exchange we also find evidence that events proceeding through diffraction dissociation are more likely to contain Δ ++ than other events. We present results on the forward production of Δ ++ in association with Δ ++ and protons.

The reactions p p → K ∗ (890) X , p p →Σ ± (1385) X and p p → S ∗ (993) X at 12 GeV/ c incident momentum have been studied using 19 000 events with a visible V 0 decay in BEBC. We present new data on charged particle production in p p interactions at 100 GeV/ c . Comparisons are made between p p annihilations (estimated by differences) between corresponding p p and pp data samples) and e + e − annihilation into hadrons. A technique for separating the inclusive proton and pion spectra is described and the resulting pion spectra are studied in terms of Feynman x , rapidity and p T . Comparison with pp data allows us to estimate the pion spectra in p p annihilations and we find agreement with predictions of Mueller-Regge theory. We also present results on semi-inclusive π ± and proton production, give updated topological cross sections and describe further attempts to isolate effects due to annihilations. Finally we investigate the diffractive excitation of the antiproton into low-mass states by studying events with a slow recoil proton.

We have measured charged-particle production in neutron-nucleus collisions at high energy. Data on positive and negative particles produced in nuclei [ranging in atomic number (A) from beryllium to lead] are presented for essentially the full forward hemisphere of the center-of-mass system. A rough pion-proton separation is achieved for the positive spectra. Fits of the form Aα to the cross sections are presented as functions of transverse momentum, longitudinal momentum, rapidity, and pseudorapidity. It is found that α changes from ∼0.85 to ∼0.60 for laboratory rapidities ranging from 4 to 8. Trends in the data differ markedly when examined in terms of pseudorapidity rather than rapidity. Qualitatively, the major features of our data can be understood in terms of current particle-production models.

Hadron production by e + e − annihilation has been studied for c.m. energies W between 13 and 31.6 GeV. As a function of 1n W the charged particle multiplicity grows faster at high energy than at lower energies. This is correlated with a rise in the plateau of the rapidity distribution. The cross section s d σ /d x is found to scale within ±30% for x > 0.2 and 5 ⩽ W ⩽ 31.6 GeV.

We have studied inclusive KS0, Λ, and Λ¯ production in π+d interactions at 24 GeV/c. The observed cross sections are 2.5±0.13 mb for KS0, 1.62±0.09 mb for Λ, and 0.12±0.02 mb for Λ¯. Longitudinal- and transverse-momentum distributions of the produced particles are presented. The average charged multiplicities of the system associated with a KS0 or with a Λ are presented and discussed. A nonzero average Λ polarization (-0.10±0.03) is observed. The x distribution of the backward (forward) KS0 and Λ produced in the reaction are in agreement with the x distribution of valence quarks in nucleons in nuclear target (pion beam), as predicted by the quark-recombination model of particle production applied to nuclear targets.

New data on the inclusive production of the non-strange resonances ϱ0(770), ω(783), ϕ(1020) andf(1270) inK− p interactions at 32 GeV/c are presented. The inclusive production cross sections are equal to (4.32±0.72) mb, (3.7±1.4) mb, (0.65±0.10) mb and (0.91±0.35) mb respectively. Estimates of the topological cross sections are also obtained. The invariant and non-invariantx-distributions for the vector mesons ϱ0 and ϕ indicate the prevalence of forward resonance production in the c.m. system. For the tensorf-meson the rapidity andx-distributions are presented. Thet′-distributions for ϱ0, ϕ, andf have exponential slopes of 0.6±0.1 GeV−2, 1.2±0.2 GeV−2, and 0.8±0.5 GeV−2 respectively. The exponential slope ofpT2-distribution of thef-meson is equal to (2.3±0.5) GeV−2.

Inclusive production of ϱ0,f, andg0 mesons and ofKs0,K*0 (892), ϕ andK*0(1430)mesons has been measured at <y>∼2.6 and <pT>∼1.1 GeV/c in proton-proton interactions at\(\sqrt s= 52.5\) GeV. The negative particle from the two-body decays of these resonances were identified by a threshold Cerenkov counter and used for triggering. Starting from the measured differential cross section, total inclusive cross sections for the vector and tensor mesons were determined using various parametrizations for they andpT dependence of the differential cross section. The experimental results are discussed in the framework of production models based on the parton picture. The strangeness suppresion factor λ=(0.30±0.10) due toSU(3) symmetry breaking of the quark sea is derived.
