3600 two-pronged events, obtained in p−p interactions at 2 Bev in the BNL 20-in. hydrogen bubble chamber, have been analyzed. Cross sections have been measured for elastic scattering, for the two modes of single-pion production, p+p→p+n+π+, p+p→p+p+π0, and for strange-particle production. The branching ratio for the two one-pion production reactions is σ(pnπ+)σ(ppπ0)=4.17±0.25. Momentum distributions and Q values indicate that single-pion production proceeds almost entirely through the (32, 32) resonant state. The data have been considered in terms of the extended isobar model and also a one-pion exchange model for production. The branching ratio and momentum distributions can be explained by including a small effect from the I=12 resonant state in addition to the dominant I=32 resonance. The c.m. angular distribution of the nucleons in single-pion production shows very marked backward-forward peaking indicating a one-pion exchange mechanism. Absolute differential cross sections as a function of laboratory kinetic energy have been calculated from Selleri's equation for the pnπ+ reaction. There is good agreement with the data for low four-momentum transfers [q2<0.15(Bev/c)2], but for higher momentum transfers the theoretical cross sections are larger than the experimental cross sections.

Multiple Meson Production in Proton-Proton Collisions at 2.85 Bev

Measurements have been made on 753 four-prong events obtained by exposing the Brookhaven National Laboratory 20-in. liquid hydrogen bubble chamber to 2.85-Bev protons. The partial cross sections observed for multiple meson production reactions are: pp+−(p+p→p+p+π++π−), 2.67±0.13; pn++−, 1.15±0.09; pp+−0, 0.74±0.07; d++−, 0.06±0.02; four or more meson production, 0.04±0.02, all in mb. Production of two mesons appears to occur mainly in peripheral collisions with relatively little momentum transfer. In cases of three-meson production, however, the protons are typically deflected at large angles and are more strongly degraded in energy. The 32, 32 pion-nucleon resonance dominates the interaction; there is some indication that one or both of the T=12, pion-nucleon resonances also play a part. The recently discovered resonance in a T=0, three-pion state appears to be present in the pp+−0 reaction. Results are compared with the predictions of the isobaric nucleon model of Sternheimer and Lindenbaum, and with the statistical model of Cerulus and Hagedorn. The cross section for the reaction π0+p→π++π−+p is derived using an expression from the one-pion exchange model of Drell.

pi--p Interactions at 604 MeV

Vittitoe, C.N. ; Riley, B.R. ; Fickinger, W.J. ; et al.
Phys.Rev. 135 (1964) B232-B240, 1964.
Inspire Record 46855 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.594

The interactions of 604 MeV π− mesons in a hydrogen bubble chamber have been systematically analyzed. In 33 000 pictures a total of 8052 usable events were found, corresponding to cross sections of 18.9±1.3 mb for σ(elastic), 4.98±0.54 mb for σ(π−pπ0), 7.87±0.91 mb for σ(π−nπ+), 14.0±1.0 mb for σ(neutrals), with σ(two−pionproduction)<0.2 mb, for a total cross section of 45.9±1.9 mb at this energy. The angular distribution for elastic scattering was fitted with a fifth-order polynomial in cosθ which gave a value of dσdΩ(0°) consistent with dispersion theory. The pion-pion effective-mass distributions for both single-pion-production channels showed pronounced peaking at high mass values, strongly inconsistent with simple isobar-production kinematics. Simple one-pion exchange does not appear to play a significant role.

Single and Multiple Pion Production in pi+n and pi-p Interactions at 1.7 GeV/c

Bacon, T.C. ; Fickinger, W.J. ; Hill, D.G. ; et al.
Phys.Rev. 157 (1967) 1263-1278, 1967.
Inspire Record 52416 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.26582

Meson production in π−p and π+n interactions at 1.7 GeV/c has been studied in two bubble-chamber exposures. Combined results are presented with emphasis on single-pion production (4300 events) which is dominated by the formation of the ρ0 meson in peripheral interactions, and on double-pion production (1100 events) which shows strong formation of the ω meson. These data are compared with the predictions of particle-exchange models, including absorption, and the effects of competing channels are discussed. Evidence for a two-pion decay mode of the ω is examined quantitatively. Processes with higher meson multiplicities are described.

pi+p Interactions at 900 MeV

Metzger, W.J. ; Forman, B. ; Melissinos, A.C. ; et al.
Phys.Rev. 164 (1967) 1680-1692, 1967.
Inspire Record 944947 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.26565

We report the results of the investigation of 18 500 frames of π+p interactions in the Brookhaven 20-in. bubble chamber at an incident energy of 900 MeV. It is found that single-pion production proceeds almost entirely through formation of the N33* isobar. The production mechanism of the N33* is analyzed in terms of its spin density matrix. Comparison is made with Stodolsky and Sakurai's ρ-exchange model and with the absorptive peripheral model.

Differential cross sections as a function of momentum are presented for the production of K+ mesons in p−p collisions at incident proton energies of 2.54, 2.88, and 3.03 GeV. The measurements were made at 20°, 30°, and 40° relative to the direction of the internal proton beam of the Princeton-Pennsylvania accelerator. At 2.54 GeV, the results follow closely the predictions from phase space (with 60% K+ΣN and 40% K+Λp in the final state). At 2.88 and 3.03 GeV, however, there is a definite disagreement with phase space. The data are compared to the predictions of three models: (1) a model based on the assumption that K's are produced via p+p→K++X+, where X+ is a B=2, S=−1 resonance which decays into a nucleon+hyperon; (2) the isobar model; and (3) the one-pion-exchange model. Model (1) is found to be inconclusive, model (2) is inadequate, and model (3) is partly successful in predicting total cross sections, but not in interpreting the detailed experimental observations.

Phys.Rev. 177 (1969) 2036-2047, 1969.
Inspire Record 55654 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.70773

K−−p interactions in the Columbia-BNL 30-in. hydrogen bubble chamber were studied at nine momenta from 594 to 820 MeVc. The results for elastic-scattering and zero-prong-plus-V0 events are presented here. Differential cross sections are given for the K−p, K¯0n, and Λπ0 final states. A fit to the K¯N channels was obtained which shows the effects of a 32− resonance at 1701 MeV. This energy is appreciably displaced from the peak in the inelastic cross section.

We present an analysis of the K ππ system produced in 10 GeV/ c K + p interactions. We show that the low-mass enchancement between 1.2 and 1.4 GeV/ c 2 on the K ππ mass spectrum is predominantly 1 + throughout, give the relative amplitudes for the decay of this system into K ∗ (890) π and K ρ , and offer new evidence for the presence of two 1 + resonances in this mass region.

A2+ mass spectrum in pi+ p interactions at 3.7 gev/c

A study of the A2+ mass spectrum in π+p interactions at 3.7 GeVc is presented. For a cut of t′=0.1−2.0 GeV2 and on eliminating the Δ++ we find that the three-pion mass spectrum in the A2+ region is fitted by the dipole formula with a confidence level of 53% and a single Breit-Wigner formula with a confidence level of 11%. Our result thus favors A2+ splitting although a single Breit-Wigner fit cannot be ruled out. We also report the A2+ decay branching fractions measured over all t′ values. They are 0.78 ± 0.05, 0.15 ± 0.04, 0.06 ± 0.03, and < 0.02 for ρπ, ηπ, KK¯, and η′π, respectively, in good agreement with other experiments.
