Charged particle production in S S collisions at 200-GeV/c per nucleon

Charged particle production in central S-S collisions at 200 GeV/ c per nucleon has been studied by the WA94 experiment at the CERN-SPS. Particle identification has been provided by the Omega RICH, while a silicon telescope in the Omega spectrometer and an array of MultiWire Proportional Chambers have been used to trace particles through the RICH detector. Production ratios and transverse mass spectra for π ± , K ± and p( p ) at central rapidity and p T > 1.3 GeV/ c are presented.

Investigation of pion absorption in heavy ion induced subthreshold pi0 production

We present results from an experimental study of reabsorption effects in subthreshold π0 production in the reaction Xe129+197Au at 44 MeV/nucleon. Within the picture of pion generation in nucleon-nucleon scattering we deduce, from our data and from a comparison with the systematics of production cross sections available for lighter reaction systems, information on the π0 absorption length in nuclear matter. For the π0 kinetic-energy range ≃5–100 MeV the energy-averaged λabs and its momentum dependence are obtained, and compared with optical-model calculations.

Exclusive $\rho^0$ and $\phi$ Production in Deep Inelastic Muon Scattering

Data are presented on exclusive ρ0 and ϕ production in deep inelastic muon scattering from a target consisting mainly of nitrogen. The ratio of the total cross sections for ρ0 and ϕ production is found to be 9∶(1.6±0.4) at 〈Q2〉=7.5 GeV2, consistent with theSU(3) prediction of 9∶2. Thet dependence for exclusive ρ0 production is found to become shallover asQ2 increases and, for largeQ2, thet dependence is typical of that for a hard scattering process. Furthermore, the ratio of the cross sections for coherent: incoherent production from nitrogen is found to decrease rapidly withQ2. Such behaviour indicates that even for exclusive vector meson production the virtual photon behaves predominantly as an electromagnetic probe.

Evidence for Narrow States Decaying Into ($\Lambda \bar{p}$ Pions) at 3.1-{GeV}/$c^2$ With Charges +1, 0 and -1

Evidence for narrow states produced by Σ − interactions in beryllium, and decaying into ( Λ p + pions ), has been obtained in an experiment at the CERN SPS hyperon beam. At 3.1 GeV/ c 2 , the ( Λ p π + π + ), ( Λ p π + π + π − ) and ( Λ p π + π − ) effective mass distributions show an excess of 45, 19 and 62 events above a background of 50, 28 and 187, respectively. The possibility that these three signals are statistical fluctuations is remote. The observed widths of the signals are compatible with the mass resolution of the apparatus, 24 MeV/ c 2 FWHM. We have not been able to find an interpretation of the quantum numbers of the final states, which are baryon number 0, strangeness −1 and charge +1, 0 and −1.

MEASUREMENT OF THE XI- P ELASTIC CROSS-SECTION AT 102-GEV/C AND 135-GEV/C

TheΞ-p differential elastic cross section has been measured in the SPS hyperon beam at 102 and 135 GeV/c. In the range 0.01<−<0.42(GeV/c)2, thet distributions are found to be compatible with the formA exp(Bt) whereB is 7.7±0.4(GeV/c)−2 at 102 GeV/c and 8.2 ±0.5(GeV/c)−2 at 135 GeV/c. The corresponding total elastic cross sections areσel=4.9±0.7 mb andσel=5.6±0.9 mb, respectively. These results are compared with the predictions of phenomenological models.

The reactions p p → Λ Λ, Λ Σ 0 or Σ 0 Λ, Σ + Σ + are studied at an incident momentum of 3.6 GeV/ c in a 35.4 event/μb experiment performed in the CERN 2m HBC. Total and differential cross sections are presented. The polarization of the hyperons is measured as a function of t and for the reaction p p → Λ Λ the complete spin correlation matrix is given.

Observation of the *forbidden* double charge exchange reaction anti-p p ---> antisigma- sigma- at 3.6 gev/c

Data are presented which firmly establish the existence of the double charge exchange reaction p p → Σ − Σ − at 3.6 GeV/ c . The forward cross section was found to be (5.9 ± 1.1) μb and the ratio of the “forbidden” to “allowed” forward cross section is R = σ( Σ − Σ − σ( Σ + Σ + ) = 0.09 ± 0.02 .
