Charged Pion Production in 70-{GeV}/$c K^+ P$ Interactions

Inclusive charged pion production is studied in an exposure of BEBC, filled with hydrogen, to an incidentK+ beam of 70 GeV/c. Total cross sections for pion production and inclusive longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions of π−'s and of positive particles are presented and compared with data at lower energies. Earlier evidence for scaling in the fragmentation regions is confirmed. The central region π− cross section increases proportionally topLAB−1/4; positive particles show almost no energy dependence atx=0. Particle ratios π+/π− are studied as a function ofx andy* and a comparison with 70 GeV/cK−p data is made. Analysis of structure functions for (ππ) pairs and of particle production associated with π± triggers at large |x| in the context of quark/parton models, provides qualitative evidence for the diquark-quark structure of the proton.

Inclusive production of ϱ0,K*±(892), andf is studied in$\bar p$p interactions at 12 GeV/c. The inclusive cross sections for ϱ0,K*±(892), andf are found to be 6.7±0.3 mb, 1.0±0.2 mb, and 1.4±0.3 mb, respectively. The differential cross sections are presented as a function of c.m. rapidity, Feynmanx and square of the transverse momentumpT2. Comparison with the correspondingpp data shows some interesting differences which can be attributed to the$\bar p$p annihilation. The results are compared with the predictions of the quark fusion model.

Results on inclusive K s 0 production in e + e − annihilation at mean center-of-mass energies of 9.4, 12.0 and 30 GeV are presented. The ratio R (K 0 ) = 2 σ (K s 0 )/ σ μμ rises from 3.10 ± 0.75 at √ s = 9.4 GeV to 5.6 ± 1.2 at √ s = 30 GeV, corresponding to an approximately constant K 0 /charged-particle ratio of 0.12 ± 0.02. A similar ratio for K 0 / charged particle is observed for direct hadronic decays of the ϒ.

We report on inclusive K 0 production in the region of the upsilon resonances (9.4–10.6 GeV). The K 0 yield for the resonances and continuum below the B B threshold is found to be constant at 0.82 ± 0.10 K 0 per observed hadronic event. At the ϒ (4S), however, the K 0 yield is significantly higher, 1.58 ± 0.35. This increase in K 0 production and the differential cross section d σ /d p of kaons are consistent with B B decay of the ϒ (4S) resonance with the bottom quarks subsequently decaying primarily into charmed quarks.

The Fermilab hybrid 30-in. bubble-chamber spectrometer was exposed to a tagged 147-GeV/c positive beam containing π+, K+, and p. A sample of 3003 K+p, 19410 pp, and 20745 π+p interactions is used to derive σn, 〈n〉, f2cc, and 〈nc〉D for each beam particle. These values are compared to values obtained at other, mostly lower, beam momenta. The overall dependence of 〈n〉 on Ea, the available center-of-mass energy, for these three reactions as well as π−p and pp interactions has been determined.

Results on cross sections, longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions forKs/0, Λ and$\bar \Lambda $ production in 360GeV/cpp interactions are presented as obtained from EHS equipped with the Rapid Cycling Bubble Chamber (RCBC). The Λ and$\bar \Lambda $ polarizations are measured. The cross section for the diffractive components is given using the recoil spectrum. The data are discussed with respect to charm production.

Results onK0 and Λ production ine+e− annihilation at c.m. energies of 14, 22 and 34 GeV are presented. The shape of theK0 and Λ differential cross sections are very similar to each other and to those of π±,K± and$p(\bar p)$. Scaling violations are observed forK0 production. We obtain a value for the probability to produce strange quark-antiquark pairs relative to that to produce up or down quark-antiquark pairs of 0.35±0.02±0.05. The value ofRh=σ(e+e-→hX)/σµµ is shown to rise steadily with c.m. energy for all particle species. At 34 GeV we find 1.48±0.05K0 and 0.31±0.03 Λ per event. We have searched for possible Λ polarization. The production ofK0's and Λ's in jets is examined as a function ofpT2 and rapidity and compared to that of all charged particles; the yields in two and three jets are also investigated. Results are presented from events with two baryons$(\Lambda ,\bar \Lambda ,por\bar p)$ observed.
