Properties of Hadron Final States in e+ e- Annihilation at 13-GeV and 17-GeV Center-Of-Mass Energies

We have observed e + e − hadrons at C.M. energies of 13 GeV and 17 GeV at PETRA using the TASSO detector. We find R (13 GeV) = 5.6 ± 0.7 and R (17 GeV) = 4.0 ± 0.7. The additional systematic uncertainty is 20%. Comparing inclusive charged hadron spectra we observe scaling between 5 GeV and 17 GeV for x = p / p beam > 0.2; however the 13 GeV cross section is above the 17 GeV cross section for smaller x . This may be due to copious bb̄ production. The events become increasingly jet like at high energies as evidenced by a shrinking sphericity distribution with increasing energy.

The inclusive production of π 0 at large values of p T in pp collisions at the ISR has been studied. In this experiment the two photons are resolved and separately measured for p T values of up to 6 GeV/ c , giving confidence that the desired signal has been separated from various backgrounds.

NEUTRAL PARTICLE PRODUCTION IN PI P INTERACTIONS AT 147-GeV/c AND COMPARISON TO CHARGED PARTICLE PRODUCTION

The production of KS, Λ, Λ¯, and γ in π−p collisions at 147 GeV/c is analyzed. Cross sections, rapidity, Feynman-x, and pT2 distributions are presented and compared to charged-particle production. The energy dependence of multiplicities in π−p and pp collisions is shown. A new scaling form for the correlation of neutral- and charged-particle multiplicities is presented for compilations of πp and pp data.

GENERAL FEATURES OF CHARGED PARTICLE PRODUCTION IN ANTI-P P INTERACTIONS AT 100-GEV/C

We present new data on charged particle production in p p interactions at 100 GeV/ c . Comparisons are made between p p annihilations (estimated by differences) between corresponding p p and pp data samples) and e + e − annihilation into hadrons. A technique for separating the inclusive proton and pion spectra is described and the resulting pion spectra are studied in terms of Feynman x , rapidity and p T . Comparison with pp data allows us to estimate the pion spectra in p p annihilations and we find agreement with predictions of Mueller-Regge theory. We also present results on semi-inclusive π ± and proton production, give updated topological cross sections and describe further attempts to isolate effects due to annihilations. Finally we investigate the diffractive excitation of the antiproton into low-mass states by studying events with a slow recoil proton.

COMPARISON OF DIRECT PHOTON PRODUCTION IN P P COLLISIONS AT S**(1/2) = 30.6-GEV AND 53.2-GEV

We present data obtained at the ISR, on the determination of the ratio R = γ π 0 at s = 30.6 GeV and we compare the results with our previous measurement at s = 53.2 GeV. The ratio R = γ π 0 integrated over the interval 0.1 ⩽ χ T ⩽ 0.2 is (1.6 ± 0.5) × 10 −2 and we obtain an indication of a universal χ T dependence.

CHARGED AND NEUTRAL PARTICLE PRODUCTION FROM 400-GEV/C P P COLLISIONS

Charged- and neutral-particle production from 400-GeV/c pp collisions are measured simultaneously using the Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber. The π0 and K0 cross sections are rising at Fermilab energies, while the Λ0 cross section remains fairly constant. Similarly, the average number of π0's and K0's increases as a function of the number of negative particles in an event, yet no such dependence is noted for the Λ0's. The ratio of average number of π0 to average number of π− per inelastic collisions is found to be constant at Serpukhov and Fermilab energies (40 to 400 GeV/c) and equal to 1.22±0.02. Cross sections for Σ0 and Σ¯0 production are measured and limits are found for η0 and ω0 production. Neutral- and charged-pion correlations are compared with five pion-production models.

STUDY OF INCLUSIVE REACTIONS K- P ---> ANTI-K0 X AND K- P ---> LAMBDA0 X AT 6.5-GeV/c

Inclusive V0 production in 6.5-GeV/c K−p interactions is studied using the ANL 12-ft-diameter hydrogen bubble chamber. The total cross sections for inclusive K¯0 and Λ0 production are σ(K¯0)=7.98±0.49 mb and σ(Λ0)=3.94±0.24 mb. Semi-inclusive differential cross sections are determined as functions of Feynman x and transverse momentum squared of the V0's and of four-momentum transfer to the V0. The average charge multiplicity, the ratio 〈nc〉D, and the correlation function f2cc for the neutrally charged hadronic system recoiling from the V0 are determined as functions of the mass of the recoiling system. Results are used to examine universal aspects of multiparticle production.

PRODUCTION OF PHOTONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE PSI BY 217-GEV/C PI- MESONS

Dimuon production is studied in 217-GeV/c π−-hydrogen and π−-beryllium collisions with a lead-glass array to detect photons associated with the ψ. The ψ−γ mass spectrum shows a 2.6-standard-deviation excess of events above background at ∼3.5 GeV. This excess, if attributed to the decay χ(∼3.5)→ψγ, implies that 0.70±0.28 of the ψ's are produced via radiative decay of one of the χ states.

Spectra of p, d, and t from relativistic nuclear collisions

Inclusive energy spectra of protons, deuterons, and tritons were measured with a telescope of silicon and germanium detectors with a detection range for proton energies up to 200 MeV. Fifteen sets of data were taken using projectiles ranging from protons to Ar40 on targets from Al27 to U238 at bombarding energies from 240 MeV/nucleon to 2.1 GeV/nucleon. Particular attention was paid to the absolute normalization of the cross sections. For three previously reported reactions, He fragment cross sections have been corrected and are presented. To facilitate a comparison with theory the sum of nucleonic charges emitted as protons plus composite particles was estimated and is presented as a function of fragment energy per nucleon in the interval from 15 to 200 MeV/nucleon. For low-energy fragments at forward angles the protons account for only 25% of the nucleonic charges. The equal mass Ar40 plus Ca systems were examined in the center of mass. Here at 0.4 GeV/nucleon Ar40 plus Ca the proton spectra appear to be nearly isotropic in the center of mass over the region measured. Comparisons of some data with firestreak, cascade, and fluid dynamics models indicate a failure of the first and a fair agreement with the latter two. In addition, associated fast charged particle multiplicities (where the particles had energies larger than 25 MeV/nucleon) and azimuthal correlations were measured with an 80 counter array of plastic scintillators. It was found that the associated multiplicities were a smooth function of the total kinetic energy of the projectile.
