Study of the Reaction $\bar{p} p \to \bar{\Lambda} \Lambda$ Near Threshold

Results are presented from a study of the reaction p p→ Λ Λ near threshold. Over 3000 events recorded at s values 14.6 and 25.5 MeV above the Λ Λ threshold (2231.2 MeV) have been analysed. Results for the production cross section, differential cross section, and the Λ and Λ polarization are given at both energies and are compared with recent theoretical calculations of this process.

Differential cross sections and polarisations in the reaction π + p→K + Σ + have been measured using the Rutherford Multiparticle Spectrometer at NIMROD. Data are presented at 26 momentum points at approximately 50 MeV/ c intervals in the range 1.282 to 2.473 GeV/ c with an order of magnitude more events than previous experiments. Legendre polynomial expansion coefficients have also been determined.

Measurements have been made of the polarisation parameters Σ , T and P for the process γ p → π + n in the photon energy range 520–2250 MeV at c.m. angles between 30° and 120°. These data were obtained in a double polarisation experiment, using the polarised photon beam from the Daresbury electron synchrotron incident on a polarised proton target. The data are compared with predictions from current theoretical analyses.

Polarization Parameters in Neutral Pion Photoproduction

The polarisation parameters Σ, P and T have been measured for the process γ p→ π 0 p in the photon energy range 1300–2100 MeV and c.m. angles between 30° and 110°, in an experiment with a polarised beam and polarised target. The results are compared with a recent theoretical analysis which fits data from threshold to 16 GeV. The new data are in general agreement with the analysis, but with some significant discrepancies in detail.

The reaction$\bar pp \to \bar \Lambda \Lambda $ has been studied in a bubble chamber experiment at eight incident momenta between 1.50 and 2.06 GeV/c. The differential cross-section, the polarization and the spin correlation coefficients have been measured. They have been compared with the prediction of two theoretical models: the K-meson conspiracy and the exchange of the K*K** degenerate trajectory associated with a Regge cut. The latter model gives the best representation of the data.

Proton Proton Elastic Scattering from 150-MeV to 515-MeV

The parameters D, R, R' and P for pp elastic scattering have been measured in the centre-of-mass angular range 13 degrees to 58 degrees with an accuracy of about +or-0.02 at 209, 324, 379, 425 and 515 MeV. These results are incorporated with earlier data into a phase-shift analysis. Phase-shifts are generally in agreement with the theoretical predictions of the Paris group, although the F-wave spin-orbit combination is rather stronger than predicted. The fitted value for the pi 0pp coupling constant in g02=14.06+or-0.65.
