Multiplicities of Secondary Hadrons Produced in Neutrino $p$ and Anti-neutrino $p$ Charged Current Interactions

In an experiment with the hydrogen bubble chamber BEBC at CERN multiplicities of hadrons produced in νp and v p interactions have been investigated. Results are presented on the multiplicities of charged hadrons and neutral pions, forward and backward multiplicities of charged hadrons and correlations between forward and backward multiplicities. Comparisons are made with hadronic reactions and e + e − annihilation. In the framework of the quark-parton model the data imply similar charged multiplicities for the fragments of a u- and a d-quark, and a larger multiplicities for the fragments of a uu- than for a ud-diquark. The correlation data suggest independent fragmentation of the quark and diquark for hadronic masses above ∼ 7 GeV and local charge compensation within an event.

Photoproduction of an Isoscalar 3$\pi$ Resonance at 1.67 GeV

A ϱπ enhancement with mass 1.67 ± 0.02GeV and width 0.16 ± 0.02GeV is observed in the channel γp→pπ + π − π 0 . Assuming an incoherent background, the cross section × branching ratio is 100 ± 20 nb. A spin-parity analysis favours J P = 1 − . The enhancement is most simply interpreted as a radial recurrence of the ω meson.

High $p_T$ Direct Photon Production at 11-degrees in $p p$ Collisions at $\sqrt{s}=63$-{GeV}

The production of direct photons has been measured relative to π 0 's in the rapidity range 2.00 < y < 2.75 in pp collisions at s = 63 GeV at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. The γ/π 0 ratio increases from ⪅2% at p T = 1.5 GeV/ c to ∼8% at p T = 4.25 GeV/ c , similar to the value observed near 90°. The results indicate no strong enhancement of single-photon production due to quark bremsstrahlung in this kinematic region.

Production of $\pi^0$ and Eta0 at 11-degrees in $p p$ Collisions at $\sqrt{s}=63$-{GeV}

The inclusive π0 production cross-section and the η/π0 ratio have been measured inpp collisions at\(\sqrt s= 63 GeV\) at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings in the rapidity range 2.00<y<2.75. The π0 cross-section exhibits a strongy-dependence and falls more steeply as a function ofpT, compared with the cross-section measured aty∼0. We find a value of 0.46±0.07 for the η/π0 ratio with no significantpT dependence over the range 2.0<pT<4.0 GeV/c.

INCLUSIVE K0(S) LAMBDA AND anti-LAMBDA PRODUCTION IN anti-p p INTERACTIONS AT 22.4-GeV/c

InclusiveKs0, Λ and\(\bar \Lambda\)-production has been investigated in\(\bar p\)p-interactions at 22.4 GeV/c. Total and topological cross sections and multiplicity characteristics of neutral strange particles have been determined. DifferentialKs0 and Λ-cross sections and also characteristics of annihilation processes with neutral kaon production have been studied. It is shown that the difference of the shapes of the invariantx-distributions forK-mesons in the fragmentation region for annihilation and non-annihilation processes can be described in the framework of the “dual” valon model, but not by considering the current (undressed) quark recombination mechanisms only. The polarization of Λ and\(\bar \Lambda\)-hyperons has been measured.

PARTICLE PRODUCTION IN THE TARGET RAPIDITY REGION FROM HADRON NUCLEUS REACTIONS AT SEVERAL GEV

Highly inelastic processes in hadron-nucleus reactions at several GeV have been studied by measuring multi-particle emission in the target-rapidity region. Events with no leading particle(s) but with high multiplicities were observed up to 4 GeV. Proton spectra from such events were well reproduced with a single-moving-source model, which implied possible formation of a local source. The number of nucleons involved in the source was estimated to be (3–5)A 1 3 from the source velocity and the multiplicity of emitted protons. In those processes the incident energy flux seemed to be deposited totally or mostly (>62;75%) in the target nucleus to form the local source. The cross sections for the process were about 30% of the geometrical cross sections, with little dependence on incident energies up to 4 GeV and no dependence on projectiles (pions or protons). The E 0 parameter in the invariant-cross-section formula E d 3 σ /d p 3 = A exp (− E / E 0 ) for protons from the source increases with incident energy from 1 to 4 GeV/ c , but seems to saturate above 10 GeV at a value E 0 = 60–70 MeV. Three components in the emitted nucleon spectra were observed which would correspond to three stages of the reaction process: primary, pre-equilibrium and equilibrium.

STRANGE PARTICLE PRODUCTION IN ANTI-P P ANNIHILATIONS AT 8.8-GEV/C

Results are presented from an experiment at the SLAC 40″ hybrid facility (SHF) using an 8.8 GeV/ c antiproton beam. Using external detectors and an on-line trigger, a sample of events enriched in p p annihilations was obtained. pp interactions taken under the same conditions enabled the annihilations to be identified. Cross sections and distributions for the inclusive production of K s 0 and K ∗± (890), and cross sections for exclusive channels with a pair of strange particles are presented.

MEASUREMENT OF n p ELASTIC SCATTERING AT HIGH-ENERGIES AND VERY SMALL MOMENTUM TRANSFERS

The np elastic differential cross section has been measured for incident neutron momenta 100–400 GeV/ c in the | t | range 6 · 10 −6 − 5 · 10 −1 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The np data of this experiment provide a first direct measurement of the hadronic amplitude for | t | < 10 −2 (GeV/ c ) 2 , which is consistent with the extrapolations from higher | t | values. Our data for | t | < 10 −4 (GeV/ c ) 2 are consistent with a rise which can be attributed to Schwinger scattering, caused by the interaction of the neutron magnetic moment with the proton.

ANALYZING POWER FOR THE P (polarized) P ---> D PI+ REACTION AT 0.8-GEV AND EFFECTS OF DIBARYON ADMIXTURES

A precision measurement of the angular distribution of the analyzing power of the reaction p + p → d + π + has been made at 0.8 GeV. It is shown that none of the existing theoretical calculations, including those which introduce resonant dibaryon amplitudes, reproduce even the qualitative features of the data. It is concluded that our data do not require dibaryon admixtures of the kind proposed for the interpretation of recent data on vector analyzing power, i T 11 (θ), of π− d elastic scattering at the same center of mass energy.
