Search for new physics in the $\tau$ lepton plus missing transverse momentum final state in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt s $ = 13 TeV

A search for physics beyond the standard model (SM) in the final state with a hadron- ically decaying tau lepton and a neutrino is presented. This analysis is based on data recorded by the CMS experiment from proton-proton collisions at a center-of- mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. The transverse mass spectrum is analyzed for the presence of new physics. No significant deviation from the SM prediction is observed. Limits are set on the production cross section of a W′ boson decaying into a tau lepton and a neutrino. Lower limits are set on the mass of the sequential SM-like heavy charged vector bo- son and the mass of a quantum black hole. Upper limits are placed on the couplings of a new boson to the SM fermions. Constraints are put on a nonuniversal gauge interaction model and an effective field theory model. For the first time, upper lim- its on the cross section of t-channel leptoquark (LQ) exchange are presented. These limits are translated into exclusion limits on the LQ mass and on its coupling in the t-channel. The sensitivity of this analysis extends into the parameter space of LQ models that attempt to explain the anomalies observed in B meson decays. The limits presented for the various interpretations are the most stringent to date. Additionally, a model-independent limit is provided.

The transverse mass distribution of $ au$ leptons and missing transverse momentum observed in the Run-2 data (black dots with statistical uncertainty) as well as the expectation from SM processes (stacked histograms). Different signal hypotheses normalized to 10 fb$^{-1}$ are illustrated as dashed lines for exemplary SSM W$\prime$ boson, QBH and EFT signal hypotheses. The ratios of the background-subtracted data yields to the expected background yields are presented in the lower panel. The combined statistical and systematic uncertainties in the background are represented by the grey shaded band in the ratio panel.

Bayesian upper exclusion limits at 95% CL on the product of the cross section and branching fraction of a W$\prime$ boson decaying to a $\tau$ lepton and a neutrino in the SSM model. For this model, W$\prime$ boson masses of up to 4.8 TeV can be excluded. The limit is given by the intersection of the observed (solid) limit and the theoretical cross section (blue dotted curve). The 68 and 95% quantiles of the limits are represented by the green and yellow bands, respectively. The $\sigma \mathcal{B}$ for an SSM W' boson, along with its associated uncertainty, calculated at NNLO precision in QCD is shown.

Bayesian 95% CL model-independent upper limit on the product of signal cross sections and branching fraction for the $\tau+\nu$ decay for a back-to-back $\tau$ lepton plus $p_{T}^{miss}$ topology. To calculate this limit, all events for signal, background, and data are summed starting from a minimum $m_{T}$ threshold and then divided by the total number of events. No assumption on signal shape is included in this limit. The expected (dashed line) and observed (solid line) limits are shown as well as the 68% and 95% CL uncertainty bands (green and yellow, respectively).

Proton Compton Effect for 300-MeV Photons

The scattering of photons by protons has been measured with a spark-chamber technique using 335-MeV bremsstrahlung. The experimental values obtained at 90° and 135° are compared with those calculated by Contogouris using dispersion relations. The agreement is reasonable except for a persistently low point for 310 MeV at 90°.

Total cross sections of the charge exchange reaction (pi+,pi0) on H-2, He-3, and He-4 across the Delta(1232) resonance.

Results from a 4π solid angle measurement of the inclusive reaction (π+,π0) on 2H, 3He, and 4He at incident pion energies of Tπ+=70, 118, 162, 239, and 330 MeV are presented. The single charge exchange total cross sections were determined, and are compared to previous results and simple models of π–few-nucleon interactions. On the helium isotopes a strong damping of the cross sections in the Δ(1232) energy region is observed. Total cross sections of the breakup reaction π++2H →π+pn are also given.

Total and partial pion absorption cross sections on He-4 in the Delta resonance region.

This paper presents a large solid angle measurement of the positive pion absorption cross section on 4He and its decomposition into partial channels. The total absorption cross sections at incident pion kinetic energies of Tπ+=70, 118, 162, and 239 MeV are 35±5, 52±4, 51±5, and 27±2 mb, respectively. These values are lower than those reported in some previous experiments. At all pion energies a large fraction of the absorption cross section is due to multinucleon channels.

Results from a 4π solid angle measurement of the reactions 3He(π+,ppp) and 4He(π+,ppp)n at incident pion energies of Tπ+=70, 118, 162, 239, and 330 MeV are presented. For 3He the total absorption cross sections and their decomposition into two-proton and three-proton components are evaluated; for 4He the three-proton absorption cross sections are given. The differential distributions of the three-proton multinucleon absorption mode of both nuclei are analyzed and compared to each other by making use of a complete set of variables. The data are investigated for signatures of initial and final state interactions: it is found that more than half of the three-proton yield cannot be accounted for by cascade mechanisms. The remaining strength shows dependence on the incident pion angular momentum, but also structures that are not explained by simple semiclassical models.

Proton compton effect

The elastic scattering of photons by protons has been measured for 100 MeV to 290 MeV photons at 90° c.m.s. and 139° c.m.s. scattering angles. The expected large increase in cross-section is observed at energies approaching that of (3/2, 3/2) pion-nucleon resonance. The scattering can be qualitatively explained by the ordinary Thomson amplitude combined with that of the (3/2, 3/2) resonance. A more detailed examination of the cross-section in the region just above the photo-meson threshold has shown that it is sensitive to the π0 photon coupling. From the experimental data, one may conclude that the π0 mean life should be between 10−16 and 10−18 s.

Production of Charged Hadron Pairs With Large Symmetric Transverse Momenta in $p p$ Collisions at 70-{GeV}

We measured the cross sections of hadron pair production (π, K, p) with symmetric momenta produced back-to-back in the c.m.s. in pp collisions in the range 0.45 ⩽ P T ⩽ 1.99 GeV/ c . Particle correlations showing dependence on quantum numbers and transverse momentum are presented. The data are discussed in the framework of parton models.
