Measurements are presented for several mixtures of the spin observables CSS,CSL=CLS, CLL, and CNN for neutron-proton elastic scattering. These data were obtained with a free polarized neutron beam, a polarized proton target, and a large magnetic spectrometer for the outgoing proton. The neutron beam kinetic energies were 484, 567, 634, 720, and 788 MeV. Combining these results with earlier measurements allows the determination of the pure spin observables CSS, CLS, and CLL at 484, 634, and 788 MeV for c.m. angles 25°≤θc.m.≤180° and at 720 MeV for 35°≤θc.m.≤80°. These data make a significant contribution to the knowledge of the isospin-0 nucleon-nucleon scattering amplitudes. © 1996 The American Physical Society.
Results for the pure spin observables. Statistical errors only. (Data for CSS and CNN at (172.5 to 177.5) and (167.5 to 172.5) degrees are uncertain because of the rapid angular dependence and possible errors in angle, and may be omitted from phase shift analyses.) The CNN data without errors are from a phase shift analysis of Arndt et al. (PR D45 (1992) 3395) [FA92] and were used to derive pure spin observables from the measured data.

The pp -> p K+ Y0 reaction has been studied for hyperon masses m(Y0)<1540 MeV/c2 at COSY-J\'ulich by using a 3.65 GeV/c circulating proton beam incident on an internal hydrogen target. Final states comprising two protons, one positively charged kaon and one negatively charged pion have been identified with the ANKE spectrometer. Such configurations are sensitive to the production of the ground state Lambda and Sigma0 hyperons as well as the Sigma0(1385) and Lambda(1405) resonances. Applying invariant- and missing-mass techniques, the two overlapping excited states can be separated unambiguously. The shape and position of the Lambda(1405) distribution, reconstructed cleanly from its Sigma0 pion0 decay, are similar to those found in other production modes and there is no obvious mass shift. This finding constitutes a challenging test for models that predict Lambda(1405) to be a two-state resonance.

We have studied inclusive KS0, Λ, and Λ¯ production and strange-resonance production in the reactions pp→(KS0, Λ, or Λ¯)+π±+anything at 405 GeV/c. The observed cross sections are 7.43 ± 0.45 mb for KS0, 4.01 ± 0.35 mb for Λ, and 0.63 ± 0.12 mb for Λ¯. From the analyses of the effective-mass distributions for the (KS0π±), (Λπ±), and (Λ¯π±) systems, the resonance production cross sections are determined as 4.1 ± 1.0 mb for K*+(890), 3.6 ± 1.0 mb for K*−(890), 3.4 ± 1.7 mb for K*±(1420), 0.67 ± 0.12 mb for Σ+(1385), 0.45 ± 0.09 mb for Σ−(1385), and 0.25 ± 0.08 mb for Σ¯±(1385). The inclusive total and differential cross sections are discussed in comparison with data at lower energies. The direct production cross sections for pseudoscalar, vector, and tensor K mesons are estimated to be 2.3 ± 1.2, 3.4 ± 1.0, and 1.7 ± 0.8 mb, respectively. Direct pseudoscalar-K-meson production accounts for less than one-third of the total inclusive kaon production. Evidence of vector-meson dominance in inclusive meson production at high energy is indicated.

Differential cross sections for $\gamma p \to K^+\Lambda(1405)$ and $\gamma p \to K^+\Sigma^0(1385)$ reactions have been measured in the photon energy range from 1.5 to 2.4 GeV and the angular range of $0.8<\cos(\Theta)<1.0$ for the $K^+$ scattering angle in the center-of-mass system. This data is the first measurement of the $\Lambda(1405)$ photoproduction cross section. The lineshapes of \LamS measured in $\Sigma^+\pi^-$ and $\Sigma^-\pi^+$ decay modes were different with each other, indicating a strong interference of the isospin 0 and 1 terms of the $\Sigma\pi$ scattering amplitudes. The ratios of \LamS production to \SigS production were measured in two photon energy ranges: near the production threshold ($1.5<E_\gamma<2.0$ GeV) and far from it ($2.0 <E_\gamma<2.4$ GeV). The observed ratio decreased in the higher photon energy region, which may suggest different production mechanisms and internal structures for these hyperon resonances.

Coherent photoproduction of ϱ 0 and ω at E γ = 4.3 GeV is observed. The ratios ϱ 0 d/ ω d and ϱ 0 d/ ϱ 0 p are discussed and compared with theoretical predictions. By comparing our data with total photoabsorption cross sections we determine the direct vector meson-photon coupling to be γ ϱ 2 /4 π = 0.29 ± 0.06. With this value we find the VDM relations between photoproduction and Compton scattering well satisfied.

Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II e+e− storage ring at DESY, we have obtained evidence for a new charmed resonance which decays into D*±(2010)π∓. The observed mass and width are 2420±6 MeV/c2 and 70±21 MeV/c2, respectively. The fragmentation function is found to be hard, as expected for a state containing a leading charm quark produced by nonresonant e+e− annihilation.

The reactions p¯p→π+π− and K+K− have been studied at 390, 490, 590, 690, and 780 MeV/c. An enhancement of about 150 μb has been observed in the cross sections of both reactions at the same beam momentum of 490 MeV/c. If this structure is interpreted as a meson resonance, it has a mass of 1940 ± 20 MeV and a width of less than 40 MeV.

Accurate measurements of the left-right asymmetry in π−p→γn at pπ=427−625 MeV/c with a transversely polarized target are reported. Results are compared with the predictions from the Arai and Fujii single-pion photoproduction partial-wave analysis and with data on the inverse process measured with a deuterium target. The agreement is poor, casting doubt on the correctness of the value for the radiative-decay amplitude of the neutral Roper resonance now in use.

We have measured the deuteron magnetic form factor B(q2) for values of the momentum transfer squared between 7 and 28 fm−2. The data are compared with relativistic and nonrelativistic predictions including meson-exchange-current contributions. Significant disagreement is found for large momentum transfers.

High-statistics data on the reaction π−p→ηπ+π−n at 8.06 GeV/c were obtained. An isobarmodel partial-wave analysis was performed for the ηππ system. The η(1275) meson was confirmed as a narrow IJPC=00−+ resonance. It decays through both δπ and εη. A narrow state with IJPC=00−+ was found in an ηππ decay channel at 1.42 GeV. It has a prominent peak in a δπ decay mode. No significant E(1420) signal with IJPC=01++ was found near the mass region of 1.42 GeV.

Interaction cross sections (σI) for all known Li isotopes (Li6-Li11) and Be7, Be9, and Be10 on targets Be, C, and Al have been measured at 790 MeV/nucleon. Root mean square radii of these isotopes as well as He isotopes have been deduced from the σI by a Glauber-type calculation. Appreciable differences of radii among isobars (He6-Li6, He8-Li8, and Li9-Be9) have been observed for the first time. The nucleus Li11 showed a remarkably large radius suggesting a large deformation or a long tail in the matter distribution.

This paper describes measurements of the semileptonic weak-neutral-current reactions νpμ→νpμ and ν¯pμ→ν¯pμ which yield the absolute differential cross sections dσ(νpμ)dQ2 and dσ(ν¯pμ)dQ2. The weak-neutral-current parameter, sin2θW, is determined to be sin2θW=0.220±0.016(stat.)(syst.)−0.031+0.023.

Large-angle cross sections for γd→π0d are systematically measured in the photon energy range between 500 and 1000 MeV. A good fit is obtained by use of a Glauber-model calculation which includes the dibaryon resonances F33(2.26) and G41(2.51), but the fit has an unusual nature in the role of resonance and nonresonance contributions.

Evidence is presented for a narrow state, called ξ, in the decay modes J/ψ→γξ, ξ→K+K−, and ξ→KS0KS0. In the K+K− mode, the ξ has a mass of 2.230±0.006±0.014 GeV/c2, a width of Γ=0.026−0.016+0.020± 0.017 GeV/c2, a product branching ratio of (4.2−1.4+1.7±0.8)×10 −5, and a statistical significance of ∼4.5 standard deviations. In the KS0KS0 mode, it has a mass of 2.232±0.007±0.007 GeV/c2, a width of Γ=0.018−0.015+0.023± 0.010 GeV/c2, a product branching ratio of (3.1−1.3+1.6±0.7)×10 −5, and a statistical significance of ∼3.6 standard deviations. Limits on ξ decay to other final states are presented.

Momentum spectra of protons from the (γ, p) reaction have been measured at θp=30° for H1, H2, He4, Be9, C12, and O16 with a tagged photon beam with energies from 187 to 427 MeV. By analysis of these inclusive proton spectra, cross sections for the pion photoproduction from the quasifree nucleon in the target nucleus and those for the photodisintegration of the quasifree two-nucleon system have been obtained as a function of the photon energy and of the target mass number.

The neutron longitudinal and transverse asymmetries $A^n_1$ and $A^n_2$ have been extracted from deep inelastic scattering of polarized electrons by a polarized $^3$He target at incident energies of 19.42, 22.66 and 25.51 GeV. The measurement allows for the determination of the neutron spin structure functions $g^n_1 (x,Q^2)$ and $g^n_2(x,Q^2)$ over the range $0.03 < x < 0.6$ at an average $Q^2$ of 2 (GeV$/c)^2$. The data are used for the evaluation of the Ellis-Jaffe and Bjorken sum rules. The neutron spin structure function $g^n_1 (x,Q^2)$ is small and negative within the range of our measurement, yielding an integral ${\int_{0.03}^{0.6} g_1^n(x) dx}= -0.028 \pm 0.006 (stat) \pm 0.006 (syst) $. Assuming Regge behavior at low $x$, we extract $\Gamma_1^n=\int^1_0 g^n_1(x)dx = -0.031 \pm 0.006 (stat)\pm 0.009 (syst) $. Combined with previous proton integral results from SLAC experiment E143, we find $\Gamma_1^p - \Gamma_1^n = 0.160 \pm 0.015$ in agreement with the Bjorken sum rule prediction $\Gamma^p_1 - \Gamma ^n_1 = 0.176 \pm 0.008$ at a $Q^2$ value of 3 (GeV$/c)^2$ evaluated using $\alpha_s = 0.32\pm 0.05$.

We report measurements of the ratios K+π+, pπ+, K−π−, p¯π−, π−π+, K−K+, and p¯p for hadrons with 0.19<xt<0.62 produced in p−Be and p−W collisions at s=38.8 GeV. The K+π+ ratio at high xt gives the fragmentation-function ratio DuK+Duπ+ at high z. The high-xt K−π− ratio gives an upper limit for DdK−Ddπ− at high z. The pt dependence of pπ+ suggests that scattered constituent diquarks are the primary source of protons with pt<6 GeV/c. We also present species correlations in high-mass h+h− pairs. Strong K+K− and pp¯ correlations were observed.

Experimental results on the production of dimuons by 800-GeV protons incident on a copper target are presented. The results include measurements of both the continuum of dimuons and the dimuon decays of the three lowest-mass ϒ S states. A description of the apparatus, data acquisition, and analysis techniques is included. A comparison of the results with data taken at lower incident energies indicates a scaling behavior of the continuum dimuon yields.

The cross section for γp→π−Δ++(1236), measured at 5, 8, 11, and 16 GeV from nearzero momentum transfer to -1 GeV2 (-2 GeV2 at 16 GeV), rises from small t to a maximum near −t=mπ2, then falls as e12t out to −t≈0.2 GeV2, after which it becomes roughly equal in slope and magnitude to the single π+ photoproduction cross section (e3t). At fixed t, the cross section varies as k−2, where k is the laboratory photon energy. The results do not agree well with the simple vector-dominance model.

The differential cross sections at 180° for the reactions γ+p→π++n and γ+n→π−+p were measured using a magnetic spectrometer to detect π± mesons. In order to reduce the spread of energy resolution due to the nucleon motion inside the deuteron, a photon difference method was employed with a 50-MeV step for the reaction γ+n→π−+p. The data show structures at the second- and the third-resonance regions for both reactions. A simple phenomenological analysis was made for fitting the data, and the results are compared with those of previous analyses.

We have studied the ratio R=[dσ(γd→π−pp)dt][dσ(γd→π+nn)dt]−1 at 8 and 16 GeV for momentum transfers |t| from about 0.001 to 1.3 GeV2. R is close to unity for |t|<mπ2, but falls very rapidly with increasing |t|, passing through ½ near |t|=0.1 GeV2 and having a minium value of about 13 near |t|=0.4 GeV2; it slowly increases at larger momentum transfers. These results are similar to those obtained in other laboratories at 3.4 and 5 GeV. This implies considerable interference between the isoscalar and isovector photon amplitudes.
