This paper reports the results of a study of hadron production in e+e− collisions at c.m. system energies of 33, 35, and 35.8 GeV. Production of a new quark flavor has been sought. The measured values of the total cross section, the thrust distributions, and the study of inclusive muon production show no evidence for the production of a new charge-23e quark near threshold. In addition, during an energy scan in the region 29.9<~s<~31.6 GeV, no hadron resonance indicating the existence of a bound state composed of charge-23e quarks has been found.

This report reviews the experimental investigation of high energy e + e − interactions by the MARK J collaboration at PETRA, the electron-positron colliding beam accelerator at DESY in Hamburg, Germany. The physics objectives include studies of several purely electromagnetic processes and hadronic final states, which further our knowledge of the nature of the fundamental constituents and of their strong, electromagnetic and weak interactions. Before discussing the physics results, the main features and the principal components of the MARK J detector are discussed in terms of design, function, and performance. Several aspects of the on-line data collection and the off-line analysis are also outlined. Results are presented on tests of quantum electrodynamics using e + e − → e + e − , μ + μ − and τ + τ − , on the measurement of R , the ratio of the hadronic to the point-like muon pair cross section, on the search for new quark flavors, on the discovery of three jet events arising from the radiation of hard noncollinear gluons as predicted by quantum chromodynamics, and on the determination of the strong coupling constant α s .

EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF HEAVY CHARGED LEPTONS AT PETRA

Data from the MARK-J detector on the reactions e+e−→μ+μ−, τ+τ− in the center-of-mass energy range from 12 to 36.7 GeV are presented. The μ, τ radii are shown to be <10−16 cm. A search has been made for the production of a new heavy lepton and for the production of spin-0 supersymmetric partners of the muon. 95%-confidence-level lower limits of 16 GeV for the mass of a new charged heavy lepton and 15 GeV for the mass of the scalar partners of the muon are obtained.

A PRODUCTION IN K- P INTERACTIONS AT 32-GeV/c. FRANCE-SOVIET UNION AND CERN-SOVIET UNION COLLABORATIONS

Lambda production is studied in K − p interactions at 32 GeV/ c . The total Λ cross section is 2.31±0.03 mb . Using the measured Λγ combinations we find that (31±4)% of all Λ's are produced via the Σ 0 → Λγ decay. About 60% of the Λ's are associated with either a N N or K K pair; about 40% of the Λ's are produced through the hypercharge annihiltion reaction K − p→ Λ + π 'a. The two-peak structure of the invariant x distribution can be related to fragmentation processes. The Λ is found to be unpolarized in the target fragmentation region, whereas a transverse polarization is observed for forward produced Λ's. As a function of p ⊥, a polarization effect is measured at medium p ⊥.

We report the measurement of the reaction e + + e − → hadronic jets at a center-of-mass energy √ s =30 GeV using the MARK-J detector at PETRA. By measuring the energy and angular distribution of both neutrals and charged particles we were able to isolate unambiguously the three-jet events in a kinematic region where the backgrounds from q q and phase space contributions and other processes are small. Various comparisons of the data with quantum chromodynamics were made. The relative yield of three-jet events and the shape distribution of the events enable us to determine α s = 0.23 ± 0.02 (statistical error) with a systematic error of ± 0.04.

We report the analysis of the spatial energy distribution of data for e+e−→hadrons obtained with the MARK-J detector at PETRA. We define the quantity "oblateness" to describe the flat shape of the energy configuration and the three-jet structure which is unambiguously observed for the first time. Our data can be explained by quantum chromodynamic predictions for the production of quark-antiquark pairs accompanied by hard noncollinear gluons.

Based on 88 hadron events, and an integrated luminosity of 243 nb −1 we obtain R = σ (e + e − → hadrons)/ σ (e + e − → μ + μ − ) = 4.0 ± 0.5 (statistical) ± 6 (systematic). The R value, the measured thrust distribution and average spherocity show no evidence for the production of new quark flavors.

We present a systematic investigation of channel cross sections in K − p interactions at 32 GeV/ c . The energy dependence of these cross sections is discussed. We also investigate a few non-diffractive two-body reactions. The total cross sections of the two reactions K − p → K ∗− (890) p and K − p → K ∗− (1420) p have a markedly different energy behaviour. There is clear evidence for the reaction K − p → K ∗0 (890) N 0 (1688) ; its differnttial cross section exhibits a sharp forward slope of 24 ± 3 GeV −2 .

The K ∗ o ̈ + (890), Φ, K ∗ o ̈ − (1420) and f cross sections beam fragmentation; ϱ production is almost forward-backward symmetric in the c.m.s. The p T production slopes of K ∗ o ̈ − (890) and ϱ are similar, the Φ slope is shallower. Vector and tensor mesons alone are responsible for ≅50% (≅60%) of final-state pions

Proton-proton and proton-deuteron elastic scattering has been measured for incident laboratory energy from 50 to 400 GeV; minimum |t| values were, for p−p, 0.0005 (GeV/c)2, and for p−d, 0.0008 (GeV/c)2. From the differential cross sections we have determined the ratios of the real to imaginary parts of the forward scattering amplitude, ρpp and ρpd, for p−p and p−d scattering. Using a Glauber approach and a sum-of-exponentials form factor we obtain ρpn for p−n scattering.

Polarization Measurements in pi+ p, K+ p and p p Elastic Scattering at 45-GeV/c and Comparison with Regge Phenomenology

The polarization parameter P has been measured for elastic π + p, K + p and pp scattering at 45 GeV/c. Four-momentum transfer ranges from −0.08 to −1.1 (GeV/) 2 for pp, and from −0.08 to −0.9 (GeV/) 2 for π + p and K + p. The energy dependence of the polarization P ( t ) in π + p and in K + p above 6 GeV/c incident momentum is compatible with interference between pomeron and Regge poles. On the other hand, the polarization in p p elastic scattering decreases faster than ordinary Regge model predictions. This result can be explained by interference between non flip and flip amplitudes of the pomeron, leading to negative values for the polarization.

The energy dependence of P (t) in π − p above 10 GeV/ c is well fitted by P (t) α s αR(t)-α P (t) where α R (t) are the effective Regge and Pomeron trajectories respectively. The data in K − p are compatible with exchange degeneracy. The results inp¯p show an important structure for |t|> 0.3 (GeV/c) 2 demonstrating the existence of a large helicity flip amplitude.

Our Λ 0 π 0 π 0 data are dominated by a Σ (1385) π 0 production. Our Σ 0 π 0 π 0 data is consistent with the presence of some Σ (1405) π 0 production.

From measurements of proton-proton elastic scattering at very small momentum transfers where the nuclear and Coulomb amplitudes interfere, we have deduced values of ρ, the ratio of the real to the imaginary forward nuclear amplitude, for energies from 50 to 400 GeV. We find that ρ increases from -0.157 ± 0.012 at 51.5 GeV to +0.039 ± 0.012 at 393 GeV, crossing zero at 280 ± 60 GeV.

Cross sections of 27 radionuclides formed by the interaction of 300-GeV protons with silver were determined on the assumption that the cross section of the reaction Al27(p, 3pn) remains the same as at 10-30 GeV. The results are compared with the corresponding values obtained at 11.5 GeV. The average value of the ratio σ300σ11.5 for all products ranging from Be7 to Ag106m is 0.91±0.07 and is independent of mass number.
