High Transverse Momentum $J/\psi$ Production at the {CERN} Proton - Anti-proton Collider

We have studied high transverse momentum J/ψ production in p p interactions at s =630 GeV . The measured cross section times branching fraction for J/ψ→μ + μ − production with p T ⩾5 GeV / c and | y |<2.0 is 7.5±0.7±1.2 nb . The event topology is used to establish that there is J/ψ production from both the direct production of c c bound states and the decay of B hadrons. The inferred yield of J/ψ from beauty decays is compatible with our estimates of beauty production in other channels.

Multihadronic e+e− annihilation events at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV have been studied with both the original (PEP 5) Mark II and the upgraded Mark II detectors. Detector-corrected distributions from global shape analyses such as aplanarity, Q2-Q1, sphericity, thrust, minor value, oblateness, and jet masses, and inclusive charged-particle distributions including x, rapidity, p⊥, and particle flow are presented. These distributions are compared with predictions from various multihadron event models which use leading-logarithmic shower evolution or QCD matrix elements at the parton level and string or cluster fragmentation for hadronization. The new generation of parton-shower models gives, on the average, a better description of the data than the previous parton-shower models. The energy behavior of these models is compared to existing e+e− data. The predictions of the models at a center-of-mass energy of 93 GeV, roughly the expected mass of the Z0, are also presented.

Rapidity Dependence of the Charged Particle Multiplicity Distributions in e+ e- Annihilation at 29-GeV

The charged particle multiplicity distribution for e + e − annihilations at s = 29 GeV has been measured using the High Resolution Spectrometer at PEP. The multiplicity distribution, expressed as a function of the mean, shows KNO scaling when compared to e + e − data at other energies. Multiplicity distributions for particles selected in different central rapidity spans are presented. All of these are well presented by the Negative binomial distribution. As the rapidity span is narrowed, the distributions become broader and approach a constant value of the parameter k .

$\Lambda$ Production in $e^+ e^-$ Annihilations at 29-{GeV}: A Comparison With Lund Model Predictions

This paper presents measurements of the inclusive production cross sections of Λ baryons in e+e− annihilations at s=29 GeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 256 pb−1 collected with the High-Resolution Spectrometer at the SLAC storage ring PEP. Comparisons are made to the predictions of the Lund model. The data are well described with use of a strange-diquark suppression parameter, (usud)(sd), of 0.89 ± 0.10−0.16+0.56, and the measured Λc→Λ+X branching ratio of (23 ± 10)%.

Charm Hadron Properties in 360-GeV/c $\pi^-$ p-Interactions

A study of the properties of charm particles produced in 360 GeV/c π-p interactions is reported. The experiment was performed using the high resolution hydrogen bubble chamber LEBC in association with the European Hybrid Spectrometer at the CERN SPS. Details of the exposure and operation of the spectrometer are given and the methods used to extract the charm data are presented. The essential physics results on the decay properties (lifetime, branching ratios) as well as on the hadroproduction properties (cross sections forD,\(\bar D\),F, Λc,D, correlations between charm particles) are given.

Production of ϱ 0 , K ∗0 , K ∗0 , and φ have been measured in proton-proton collisions at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR) at low p T in the central region. The transverse mass spectra are well described by exp (− aμ T ), with a = −6.4±0.2 GeV −1 . The cross sections for d σ/ d y| y=0 are 6.5±0.8±1.2 mb for ϱ 0 , 1.9±0.3±0.3 mb for K ∗) , 1.9±03±03 mb for K ∗0 , and 60.±0.12±0.13 mb for φ , where the first error is statistical and the second is sytematic.

We present results on the jet structure observed in multihadronic events produced by e+e− annihilation in the Mark I magnetic detector at SPEAR. The evidence for jet structure and the jet-axis angular distribution are reported. We give inclusive distributions of the hadrons in Feynman x, rapidity, and transverse momentum relative to the jet axis.
