The analyzing power A and spin-transfer parameters KNN, KSS, KSL, and KLL have been measured in the np charge-exchange (np→pn) region at 790 MeV. These data provide new and unique information on the spin dependence of the np interaction in the charge-exchange region. Models which explain the charge-exchange peak in the np elastic differential cross section as being due to interference between one-pion exchange and a slowly varying background are in basic agreement with the data.

USING PHASE-SHIFT VALUES FOR KLS AND KSL.
αα elastic scattering was measured at 4.32 GeV/ c and 5.07 GeV/ c incident momenta. The four-momentum transfer range, extending from −0.05 to −0.77 (GeV/ c ) 2 , covers the first and second minimum regions. The results are compared with calculations based on Glauber theory.

The cross section for elastic scattering of 794-MeV neutrons by deuterium has been measured for neutron center of mass angles from 139° to 179°. The angular distribution is fitted very well both by an empirical function αeβ(μ−μ180∘) and by a calculation that uses the one parameter Craigie-Wilkin triangle diagram technique. The angular distribution of the inclusive reaction 4 He + p → 3 He + X was measured with 6.85 GeV/ c incident alphas. At large angles, the observed kinematics corresponds to the elastic scattering on the target proton of an 3 He present in the incoming 4 He, the remaining neutron being a spectator. This shows the presence of an important component of 3 He in 4 He. The integrated cross section for 3 He production is σ 3He = 24.1 ± 1.9 mb.

The neutron polarization asymmetry in neutron-deuteron scattering has been measured from 44.5° to 160° (c.m.) neutron angle. The results display quantitatively the same structure as proton-deuteron polarization data, but discrepancies appear for angles corresponding to those near the minimum of the differential cross section. In this region the polarization is considerably more negative than in the proton-deuteron case, and both are more negative than current theoretical predictions.

The neutron-proton differential cross section at 50.0 MeV has been measured to a precision of ≃ 2% for backward-hemisphere c.m. angles and ≃ 3% for forward angles, both relative. The present data are not in good agreement with the previous n−p measurements near this energy. A preliminary phase-shift analysis using the present data produces more satisfactory results, particularly for the P11 phase shift.

Antiproton-proton elastic scattering has been measured at 3.55 GeV/ c in the c.m. angular range from 20° to 77° and from 109° to 160°. Forward elastic scattering shows a structure near t = −0.5 (GeV/ c ) 2 . In the backward region two events are observed.
