The excitation functions for positive pion production from hydrogen have been obtained in the energy region from 230 Mev to 450 Mev and at laboratory pion angles of 24°, 38°, 53°, 73°, 93°, 115°, 140°, and 160°. The pions are detected and identified by measuring their range and ionization in a scintillation counter telescope. The above data are analyzed to give the angular distributions in the center-of-momentum system, and a least-squares analysis made to determine coefficients in σ(θ)=A+Bcosθ+Ccos2θ. The total cross section shows a peak at 300 Mev of magnitude 2.20×10−28 cm2. The coefficient B passes through a maximum negative value at 250 Mev and then passes through zero at 325 Mev and remains positive up to the highest energy measured.

The differential cross section for the reaction γ+p→π+n was measured at 19 photon energies between 300 and 750 MeV in the laboratory frame, for pion angles between 0° and 130° in the c.m. system. The pions were analyzed in angle and momentum with a magnetic spectrometer and detected by a counter telescope. The 0° measurements could be achieved, in spite of the excessive positron rate, owing to a mass-spectrometer arrangement. No direct indication for the electromagnetic excitation of the P11 resonance (1466 MeV) was found. Comparison is made with theoretical calculations of π+ photoproduction.

Polarization and differential cross-section data at 0.86, 0.97, 1.09, 1.37 and 1.45 GeV c are presented. An energy-independent phase-shift analysis from threshold up to 1.45 GeV c using random searches at 19 momenta and the shortest path method to link solutions at different momenta, yields three solutions. One of these is unlikely; the other two coincide up to 0.86 GeV c , and both show an anticlockwise half-circle in the P 3 -wave.

Polarization angular distributions of K + p elastic scattering have been measured at 1.22 and 2.48 GeV/ c . Over the measured range of − t the polarization is generally large and positive. The data at 1.22 GeV/ c resolve an ambiguity in a recently published phase-shift analysis, favouring the solution which requires no resonance in the K + p system.

The electromagnetic form factor of the pion has been determined in the ϱ o resonance region by measuring the absolute cross section of the reaction e + e − → π + π − with the Orsay storage ring. More than 800 pion pairs have been detected. The excitation curve has been fitted with a Breit-Wigner formula which leads to the following values: σ peak = (1.69 ± 0.21) 10 −30 cm 2 ; m ϱ = (770 ± 4) MeV ; Γ ϱ = (111 ± 6) MeV . The partial width of the ϱ o going into e + e − thus obtained is: Γ ϱ → e + e − =(7.36±0.7) keV .

The cross section for the production of Ξ + particles in K + p interactions at 12.7 GeV/ c is 10 ± 3 μ b; the Ξ − production cross section is 2.5 ± 1.0 μ b; the upper limit on Ω − or Ω + production is 0.4 μb. The Ξ − are produced preferentially in the backward direction in the CM system while the Ξ + are produced mainly forward. The mass and lifetime of the Ξ + agree with the accepted values for the Ξ − hyperon.
Cross sections have been corrected for the detection probability of all observed hyperons involved in these reactions.
A systematic search for exotic states produced in K − d interactions at 3 GeV/ c is reported. From the analysis of the mass spectra of strange mesons, non-strange mesons, hyperons with S = −1 and S = −2, upper limits for the production cross sections of exotic resonances may be placed at one or two orders of magnitude smaller than for the production of normal resonances of same strangeness and baryon number.

At 3 GeV/ c , the total and differential cross sections of the reactions K − n → Y π − have been determined for nine S = −1 baryonic states. Backward peaks associated with a dip near u = −0.2 are observed in many cases. They have been interpreted, for the isospin-zero Y-states, in terms of a proton-exchange mechanism. The backward peaks in the reactions K − n → Λπ − and K − n → Σ o π − have been more quantitatively related to the backward π N → N π differential cross sections at the same energy. This comparison leads to the conclusion, that the first reaction is dominated by nucleon exchange, whereas the second one requires a more complex exchange mechanism.

Polarization and differential cross-section data for elastic scattering of negative kaons on polarized protons between 865 and 1330 MeV/ c are presented. Comparisons are made with predictions given by published energy dependent phase-shift analyses. The Legendre expansion coefficients characterizing the polarization distributions show remarkable structures resulting from excitation of Λ- and Σ-resonances. An analysis of the elastic and charge-exchange data in this region of momenta supports the assignments of J P = 3 2 + for the Λ(1870) resonance. Polarization and differential cross-section data at 16 momenta between 0.86 and 2.74 GeV/ c are presented. (Preliminary data on some of the momenta have been published earlier.) In an energy-independent phase-shift analysis from threshold up to 2.5 GeV/ c , resonant-like as well as non-resonant solutions are found for the P 3 wave. The total cross section of γ rays in hydrogen resulting in hadron production, σT, has been measured over the energy range 265-4215 MeV. A tagging system with narrow energy bins was employed. Structure in the resonance region followed by a steady fall with energy has been observed and the results are analyzed. The forward amplitude of γ-proton scattering is evaluated, and its behavior in the Argand diagram studied as a function of energy. The total cross section for photoproduction of hadrons on the deutron, σ T d , has been measured for photon energies in the range 0.265–40215 GeV. From this, using results for the photon total cross section, obtained previously with the same apparatus, the neutron total cross section has been determined in the resonance region. The resonant structure is found to be quite different from that for the proton. Thereafter the neutron cross section falls off steadily with energy, and the values obtained are consistently lower than those for the proton. Forward scattering amplitudes have been evaluated for the deuteron.

We have determined the pion charge exchange cross section on hydrogen for π ° mesons emitted at 180° by measuring neutron time-of-flight. Using known values of the p-wave phase shifts we have deduced the contribution of the s-wave. We also find a value of 114±55 μb / sr for the cross section in the center of mass system for radiative pion capture at 22.6 MeV (gamma ray emitted at 180°).

A bubble-chamber study is presented of a 10 events/μb experiment using K − mesons of 4.25 GeV/ c incident momentum. Differential and total cross sections are determined for 7 different reactions: K − p → K 0 n ( la ), → π 0 Λ ( lb ), → ηΛ ( lc ), → η′Λ ( ld ), → π − Σ ( le ), → π + Σ − ( lf ), K + Ξ − ( lg ) . The experimental characteristics in d σ /d t of each reaction are described: (la) shows a levelling off at t = 0 (GeV/ c ) 2 , a break at t = −0.6 (GeV/ c ) 2 and no backward events, (lb) d σ /d t has a smooth behaviour and a measurable backward component with an indication of a dip at u = −0.2 (GeV/ c ) 2 , (1c) d σ /d t shows a dip in the region between t ≈ −0.2 and −0.4 (GeV/ c ) 2 , (ld) d σ /d t has a smooth behaviour; neither this reaction nor the preceding one shows a clear evidence for backward events, (le) d σ /d t has a break at t = −0.5 (GeV/ c ) 2 ; there is a significant cross section in the backward region; (lf) and (lg) show mainly backward production. The polarization of the hyperon is measured in the reactions (lb), (lc), (ld) and (le) in the forward production peak. The statistics do not allow the detection of a definite structure in the polarization but the sign and magnitude are determined. An interpretation of the results is given in terms of a dual Regge model, including the effects of absorption as elaborated recently by several authors.

Differential cross-section measurements are presented for π−p→γn at five energies around the p33(1232) resonance. A detailed comparison is made with γn→π−p deduced from γd experiments. In general, the results are in support of detailed balance. Using the Christ-Lee-Donnachie-Shaw model, our new data indicate that the T-violating phase in the isovector part of the M1+ multipole is less than 2°, which is a very sensitive test of time-reversal invariance. No evidence is found for a possible isotensor component of the electromagnetic current. Our data are compared to various multipole analyses. In general, the agreement is poor.

We report final results on the polarization parameter P in elastic scattering of π − , K − and antiprotons at 40 GeV/ c incident momentum. The energy dependence of P (t) in π − p above 10 GeV/ c is well fitted by P (t) α s αR(t)-α P (t) where α R (t) are the effective Regge and Pomeron trajectories respectively. The data in K − p are compatible with exchange degeneracy. The results inp¯p show an important structure for |t|> 0.3 (GeV/c) 2 demonstrating the existence of a large helicity flip amplitude.
