A preliminary study of single pion production with no annihilation and multiple pion annihilation in antiproton-proton interactions at 7 GeV/c indicates that the single pion production cross-section is 5.6±1.2mb, and the multipion annihilation cross-section is ∼24mb. Although there is strong evidence for resonance production in the one pion production channels, these states do not appear to be dominated by any single resonance. Resonance production in the annihilation channels is small compared to rates observed at lower energies.

The proton-antiproton total cross section was measured at the center-of-mass energy of s = 541 GeV at the S p pS at CERN using a luminosity dependent method. The result σ tot =63.0±2.1 mb is in agreement with the luminosity independent measurement performed earlier by the UA4 Collaboration.

Antiproton-proton elastic scattering was measured at c.m.s. energies √s =546 and 1800 GeV in the range of four-momentum transfer squared 0.025<-t<0.29 GeV2. The data are well described by the exponential form ebt with a slope b=15.28±0.58 (16.98±0.25) GeV−2 at √s =546 (1800) GeV. The elastic scattering cross sections are, respectively, σel=12.87±0.30 and 19.70±0.85 mb.

The differential cross section for antiproton-proton elastic scattering has been measured for the beam momenta between 180 and 600 MeV/c. The real-to-imaginary ratio of the forward elastic scattering amplitude is derived from the Coulomb-nuclear interference. The ratio is found to be close to zero between 180 and 500 MeV/c with a minimum ofρ=−0.14 at 260 MeV/c. This result is contrary to model predictions. The phase shifts for thes-,p- andd-waves are extracted. The partial wave compositions of the elastic and inelastic cross sections have been determined. A large contribution of thep-wave is identified in the antiproton-proton interactions at small momenta.

The real-to-imaginary ratio of the p p forward elastic scattering amplitude has been measured at the LEAR facility of CERN by the Coulomb-nuclear interference method at seven beam momenta between 181 and 590 MeV/ c . The ratio is positive at 590 MeV/ c , becomes negative below 500 MeV/ c , reaches a minimum at 260 MeV/ c and then crosses zero again at about 230 MeV/ c .

Results are presented on the charge exchange reaction\(\bar pp \to \bar nn\) and\(\bar np\) annihilations from bubble chamber exposures to antiproton beam of momenta 700 and 760 MeV/c. The differential cross section of\(\bar pp \to \bar nn\) shows a forward spike followed by a clear dip bump structure. Total annihilation cross section of\(\bar np\) for average\(\bar n\) momentum of 700 MeV/c has been evaluated to be 55.4±2.2 mb. The multiplicity, Feynmanx andpT2 distributions for inclusive charged pions in\(\bar pp\) and\(\bar np\) annihilations are found to be similar. The emission of charged pions from\(\bar np\) annihilations are found to be consistent with thermodynamic models with temperature ∼110 MeV.

A detailed account is given of high-precision measurements of the total hadronic cross sections of proton-antiproton and proton-proton interactions at centre-of-mass energies of 30.6, 52.8 and 62.7 GeV. The experiment was performed at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR) using the total interaction-rate method, in which additive correction terms for trigger losses were held to less than 6% of the final result. An experimental determination of the vertical beam-displacement scale permitted luminosity-monitor calibrations to be made with high intrinsic accuracy. The overall precision (systematic and statistical errors combined) achieved in the total cross sections was ± 1.1% for proton-antiproton reactions and 0.7% for proton-proton reactions. In the proton-proton case the measurement was the most precise such measurement made at the ISR.
