The differential cross section of the reactione+e−→e+e− at a c.m. energy of 34.7 GeV has been measured. The result, together with our previously measurede+e−→α+α− data, are compared with the standard model predictions. We obtain for the weak neutral current couplings the valuesgv2=0.09×0.06,ga2=0.38×0.08. A fit of the Weinberg mixing angle gives the valuegv2=0.09×0.06,ga2=0.038×0.08. The data are also used to set limits on possible deviations from the pointlike structure of leptons. An upper limit for thee+e− coupling to a heavy spin 0 boson is also given.

We present an analysis of electroweak leptonic couplings from high statistics experiments on Bhabha scattering and μ pair production at an energy of 34.5 GeV. The forward-backward charge asymmetry of the μ pairs was measured to be −0.098±0.023±0.005. The data were found to agree well with the standard theory of electroweak interaction giving sin2θW=0.27±0.07. The leptonic weak couplings were determined to begv=0.000±0.170 andgA=−0.481±0.055. The data were also used to investigate a class of composite models for leptons.

A high-precision measurement of the differential cross section for Bhabha scattering (e+e−→e+e−) is presented. The measurement was performed with the MAC detector at the PEP storage ring of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV. Effects due to electroweak interference are observed and agree well with the predictions of the Glashow-Salam-Weinberg model. The agreement between the data and the electroweak prediction rules out substructure of the electron up to mass scales of 1 TeV.

We report results for the virtual photon asymmetry $A_1$ on the nucleon from new Jefferson Lab measurements. The experiment, which used the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer and longitudinally polarized proton ($^{15}$NH$_3$) and deuteron ($^{15}$ND$_3$) targets, collected data with a longitudinally polarized electron beam at energies between 1.6 GeV and 5.7 GeV. In the present paper, we concentrate on our results for $A_1(x,Q^2)$ and the related ratio $g_1/F_1(x,Q^2)$ in the resonance and the deep inelastic regions for our lowest and highest beam energies, covering a range in momentum transfer $Q^2$ from 0.05 to 5.0 GeV$^2$ and in final-state invariant mass $W$ up to about 3 GeV. Our data show detailed structure in the resonance region, which leads to a strong $Q^2$--dependence of $A_1(x,Q^2)$ for $W$ below 2 GeV. At higher $W$, a smooth approach to the scaling limit, established by earlier experiments, can be seen, but $A_1(x,Q^2)$ is not strictly $Q^2$--independent. We add significantly to the world data set at high $x$, up to $x = 0.6$. Our data exceed the SU(6)-symmetric quark model expectation for both the proton and the deuteron while being consistent with a negative $d$-quark polarization up to our highest $x$. This data setshould improve next-to-leading order (NLO) pQCD fits of the parton polarization distributions.

This paper presents the results of a study of the dominant neutral final states from π−p interactions. The data were obtained in an experiment performed at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Alternating Gradient Synchrotron, using a set of steel-plate optical spark chambers surrounding a liquid-hydrogen target. We present differential and total cross sections for the reactions (1) π−p→n+π0 and (2) π−p→n+η0(η0→2γ) and total cross sections for the reactions (3) π−p→n+kπ0 (k=2, 3, 4, and 5) and (4) π−p→all neutrals for eighteen values of beam momentum in the interval 1.3 to 4.0 GeV/c. The angular distributions for (1) and (2) have been analyzed in terms of expansions in Legendre polynomials, the coefficients for which are also given.

FORWARD DIFFERENTIAL CROSS SECTION CALCULATED FROM LEGENDRE POLYNOMIAL COEFFICIENTS AND ERROR MATRICES.
We have carried out an experimental study of the neutron and proton deep-inelastic electromagnetic structure functions. The structure functions were extracted from electron-proton and electron-deuteron differential cross sections measured in three experiments spanning the angles 6°, 10°, 15°, 18°, 19°, 26°, and 34°. We report primarily on the large-angle (15°-34°) measurements. Neutron cross sections were extracted from the deuteron data using an impulse approximation. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that the nucleon is composed of pointlike constituents. The variation of the cross section with angle suggests that the hypothetical constituents have spin ½. The data for σnσp, the ratio of the neutron and proton differential cross sections, are in the range 0.25 to 1.0, and are within the limits imposed by the quark model. Detailed studies of the structure functions were made for a range of the scaling variable ω from ω=1.3 to ω=10.0, and for a range of invariant four-momentum transfer Q2 from 1.0 to 20.0 GeV2. These studies indicate that the structure functions approximately scale in the variable ω, although significant deviations from scaling in ω are apparent in the region 1.3<ω<3.3. These deviations from scaling are in the same direction and of similar magnitude for both neutron and proton. The interpretation of the data in terms of various theoretical models is discussed.

By combining results from the MARK-J at PETRA on Bhabha scattering, μ + μ - and τ + τ - production with recent world data from neutrino-electron scattering experiments, we determine unique values for the leptonic weak neutral current coupling constants g V and g A in the framework of electroweak models containing a single Z 0 . In contrast to previous analyses, we only use data from purely leptonic interactions, and therefore avoid the inherent uncertainties resulting from the use of hadronic targets. From the MARK-J data alone in the context of the standard SU(2) ⊗ U (1) model of Glashow, Weinberg and Salam, we find sin 2 θ W =0.24±0.11.

We have performed absolute measurements of the differential cross section for elastic e−p scattering in the range of momentum transfer from Q2=2.9 to 31.3 (GeV/c)2. Combined statistical and systematic uncertainties in the cross-section measurements ranged from 3% at low Q2 to 19% at high Q2. These data have been used to extract the proton magnetic form factor GMp(Q2). The results show a smooth decrease of Q4GMp with momentum transfer above Q2=10 (GeV/c)2. These results are compared with recent predictions of perturbative QCD.

We have performed a high-statistics measurement of Bhabha scattering and of the production of hadrons in electron-positron annihilation at PETRA energies (12 GeV<~s<~36.7 GeV). Combining the results with measurements of μ+μ− and τ+τ− production enables us to compare our results with electroweak theory. We find sin2θw=0.27±0.08. This is in good agreement with the value obtained from neutrino experiments which were carried out in entirely different kinematic regions.

The CERES experiment (CErenkov Ring Electron Spectrometer) studies the production of low mass e + e − pairs in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus interactions at the CERN SPS. The CERES spectrometer, has a novel design based on two Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) counters, and it operates close to its design specifications. Data were recorded with 200 GeV u sulfur beam and 450 GeV proton beam. The analysis is in progress. We have extracted first e + − -pairs samples for p+Be, p+Au and S+Au collisions. In addition other physics topics were addressed. Inclusive photon spectra were measured in S+Au interactions. No excess over known hadronic sources was found within our present systematic error of 11%. Results on high p i charged pion spectra are presented up to 4 GeV c . We also studied the production of e + e − -pairs m the strong electromagnetic fields of very peripheral S+Pt collisions. The data are well described by a first-order perturbative QED-calculation.

We measured the elastic and inelastic scattering of electrons on deuterium at 180° for four incident energies (70, 140, 210 and 280 MeV). The data were analysed with a technique allowing an accurate comparison between experiment and theory. We observed a good agreement for the inelastic data with the expected cross section, using the presently available models and nucleon form factors. The experimental elastic cross section is systematically larger than the predicted cross sections.

The ep -> e'pi^+n reaction was studied in the first and second nucleon resonance regions in the 0.25 GeV^2 < Q^2 < 0.65 GeV^2 range using the CLAS detector at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. We report measurements of the exclusive electroproduction of $K^+\Lambda$ and $K^+\Sigma^0$ final states from a proton target using the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The separated structure functions $\sigma_T$, $\sigma_L$, $\sigma_{TT}$, and $\sigma_{LT}$ were extracted from the $\Phi$- and $\epsilon$-dependent differential cross sections taken with electron beam energies of 2.567, 4.056, and 4.247 GeV. This analysis represents the first $\sigma_L/\sigma_T$ separation with the CLAS detector, and the first measurement of the kaon electroproduction structure functions away from parallel kinematics. The data span a broad range of momentum transfers from $0.5\leq Q^2\leq 2.8$ GeV$^2$ and invariant energy from $1.6\leq W\leq 2.4$ GeV, while spanning nearly the full center-of-mass angular range of the kaon. The separated structure functions reveal clear differences between the production dynamics for the $\Lambda$ and $\Sigma^0$ hyperons. These results provide an unprecedented data sample with which to constrain current and future models for the associated production of strangeness, which will allow for a better understanding of the underlying resonant and non-resonant contributions to hyperon production.

A sample of 7253 $K^\pm\to\pi^\pm e^+e^-(\gamma)$ decay candidates with 1.0% background contamination has been collected by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS, allowing a precise measurement of the decay properties. The branching ratio in the full kinematic range was measured to be ${\rm BR}=(3.11\pm0.12)\times 10^{-7}$, where the uncertainty includes also the model dependence. The shape of the form factor $W(z)$, where $z=(M_{ee}/M_K)^2$, was parameterized according to several models, and, in particular, the slope $\delta$ of the linear form factor $W(z)=W_0(1+\delta z)$ was determined to be $\delta=2.32\pm0.18$. A possible CP violating asymmetry of $K^+$ and $K^-$ decay widths was investigated, and a conservative upper limit of $2.1\times 10^{-2}$ at 90% CL was established.

We report on an experiment where the different contributions from the transverse and longitudinal polarization of the virtual photon are measured separately for the reaction e − p→e − π + n. The data taken above the resonance region at small ∣ t ∣ values in the q 2 range of ∣ q 2 ∣ < 0.5 GeV 2 show a clear dominance of the longitudinal part of the cross section and are well described by a generalized Born-term model. New data from a 600 000 picture exposure of the BNL 31 inch hydrogen bubble chamber to a separated antiproton beam have been analyzed to try to determine if the π + π − π + π − or π + π − π + π − π 0 final states contribute any broad or narrow structure in the T(2190) region. The resonance channel fractions determined by maximum likelihood fits are all consistent with smooth behavior through the T-region and therefore there is no significant evidence that any of these resonance channels contributes to the broad bump in the total cross section. The errors on some of the fractions, however, limit the sensitivity to ∼ 0.5 mb for enhancements in these channels.

A fresh analysis is reported of high statistics Crystal Barrel data on p p → 3π 0 , ηηπ 0 , ηπ 0 π 0 and ηη ′ π 0 at rest. This analysis is made fully consistent with CERN-Munich data on π + π − → π + π − up to a mass of 1900 MeV, with GAMS data on π + π − → π 0 π 0 , and with BNL and ANL data on π + π − → K K , which are fitted simultaneously. There is evidence for an I = 0, J PC = 2 ++ resonance with weak (≤ 7%) coupling to ππ, strong coupling to both ϱϱ and ωω and pole position 1534 - i90 MeV. This resonance agrees qualitatively with GAMS and VES data on ππ → ωω, previously interpreted in terms of a resonance at 1590–1640 MeV. New masses and widths for (A) ƒ 0 (1370) and (B) ƒ 0 (1500) , fitted to all eight data sets, are M A = 1300 ± 15 Mev, Γ A = 230 ± 15 MeV, M B = 1500 ± 8 MeV, Γ B = 132 ± 15 MeV. Branching ratios to ππ and ηη are given, and differ significantly from earlier determinations because of a new procedure.

We report a new measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in elastic electron scattering from the proton at backward scattering angles. This asymmetry is sensitive to the strange magnetic form factor of the proton as well as electroweak axial radiative corrections. The implications for the strange magnetic form factor are discussed in the context of theoretical estimates for the axial corrections.

Vector-polarized deuterium was produced by an atomic beam source and injected into an open-ended cylindrical cell, internal to the electron storage ring. The spin correlation parameter A^V_{ed} was measured for the reaction \pol{2H}(\pol{e},e'n)p at a four-momentum transfer squared of 0.21 (GeV/c)^2 from which a value for the charge form factor of the neutron was extracted.

We have measured the parity-violating electroweak asymmetry in the elastic scattering of polarized electrons from the proton. The kinematic point (theta_lab = 12.3 degrees and Q^2=0.48 (GeV/c)^2) is chosen to provide sensitivity, at a level that is of theoretical interest, to the strange electric form factor G_E^s. The result, A=-14.5 +- 2.2 ppm, is consistent with the electroweak Standard Model and no additional contributions from strange quarks. In particular, the measurement implies G_E^s + 0.39G_M^s = 0.023 +- 0.034 (stat) +- 0.022 (syst) +- 0.026 (delta G_E^n), where the last uncertainty arises from the estimated uncertainty in the neutron electric form factor.

We report the first measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in elastic electron scattering from the proton. We report the first measurement of the neutron electric form factor $G_E^n$ via $\vec{d}(\vec{e},e'n)p$ using a solid polarized target. $G_E^n$ was determined from the beam-target asymmetry in the scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from polarized deuterated ammonia, $^{15}$ND$_3$. The measurement was performed in Hall C at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (TJNAF) in quasi free kinematics with the target polarization perpendicular to the momentum transfer. The electrons were detected in a magnetic spectrometer in coincidence with neutrons in a large solid angle segmented detector. We report the first measurement of the vector analyzing power in inclusive transversely polarized elastic electron-proton scattering at Q^2 = 0.1 (GeV/c)^2 and large scattering angles. This quantity should vanish in the single virtual photon exchange, plane wave impulse approximation for this reaction, and can therefore provide information on double photon exchange amplitudes for electromagnetic interactions with hadronic systems. We find a non-zero value of A=-15.4+/-5.4 ppm. No calculations of this observable for nuclei other than spin 0 have been carried out in these kinematics, and the calculation using the spin orbit interaction from a charged point nucleus of spin 0 cannot describe these data.

Total and differential cross sections for the dp --> 3He eta reaction have been measured near threshold for 3He center-of-mass momenta in the range from 17.1 MeV/c to 87.5 MeV/c. The data were taken during a slow ramping of the COSY internal deuteron beam scattered on a proton target detecting the 3He ejectiles with the COSY-11 facility. The forward-backward asymmetries of the differential cross sections deviate clearly from zero for center-of-mass momenta above 50 MeV/c indicating the presence of higher partial waves in the final state. Below 50 MeV/c center-of-mass momenta a fit of the final state enhancement factor to the data of the total cross sections results in the 3He eta scattering length of a = |2.9 +/- 0.6| + i (3.2 +/- 0.4) fm.

The pion form factor has been measured in the space-like q 2 region 0.014 to 0.26 (GeV/ c ) 2 by scattering 300 GeV pions from the electrons of a liquid hydrogen target. A detailed description is given of the apparatus, data analysis and corrections to the data. The mean square charge radius extracted from the data is model-dependent. We find that a form which includes a realistic description of the form factor phase gives a similar results to the naive pole form, and conclude 〈r 2 π 〉 = 0.438±0.008 fm 2 .

A peak is reported in the ηπ + π − system, produced in the reaction γ p→ ηπ + π − p, at a mass of 1.28 ± 0.01 GeV with a width of 0.08 ± 0.02 GeV. Possible spin-parity assignments for the peak are shown to be J π = 1 − , J π = 1 + or J π = 2 + and interpretations of these assignments are discussed.
