For the first time, the line reversed reactions π + p→K + Σ + and K − p→ π − Σ + have been studied in the same apparatus. We present the differential cross sections and polarizations over a large t range and at two momenta, 7.0 and 10.1 GeV/ c . The differential cross sections as a function of t are shown for the first time to cross over. Going from the lower to the higher momentum, the differences in cross section between the two reactions diminish at low | t | by about a factor 2. We find large polarizations of opposite sign for the two reactions. The momentum dependence, presented in the form of α eff ( t ) for the t range 0 to −2 (GeV/ c ) 2 , is compared with the expectations from the K ∗ −K ∗∗ trajectory.

Measurement of the exotic exchange reaction π − p → K + Σ − has been performed at 5 and 8 GeV, in the −0.015 to −0.13 and −0.009 to −0.15 (GeV/ c ) 2 range of t repectively. We give the value near t = 0 of the differential cross section at 5 GeV, 21 −21 +76 nb/(GeV/ c ) 2 , and an upper limit (< 37 nb/GeV/ c ) 2 ) at 8 GeV. As a check the measured differential cross section is given at both energies for the reaction π + p → K + Σ + in the same range of t ★★ ★★ Results presented here were included in the thesis of Doctorat d′Etat by M.N. The reaction π − p → ω n has been studied at 8 and 12 GeV / c incident momenta with the CERN Omega spectrometer using a neutron time of flight trigger. The differential cross sections and the ω-decay density matrix elements are presented as functions of the momentum transfer squared − t in the range of 0.02 to 0.80 GeV 2 . The data are used to evaluate the intercept and slope of both the natural and unnatural parity exchange trajectories. Regge exchange amplitude factorisation tests involving the reaction π N → ω N are investigated.

From a large-statistics π+p experiment at 7.1 GeV/c, data are presented on the reactions π+p→ρ0Δ++(1238) and π+p→ωΔ++(1238). Cross sections, differential cross sections, and vector-meson single-density-matrix elements are presented and a general comparison of the production properties of the two reactions is given. In addition to (ρ,ω)Δ++(1238) production there is also strong evidence for production of a π+p enhancement with mass ∼ 1880 MeV, Γ∼200 MeV, and J≥72 produced in association with the ρ and ω resonances. Detailed properties of this structure are presented and its production mechanism is compared with that of the corresponding Δ(1238) reactions. This state is also observed in the reaction K+p→K*0(890)Δ++(1880) at 12.0 GeV/c, for which data are also presented.

We report on a measurement of the missing-mass, (mm)−, spectrum from the reaction π−+p→(mm)−+p at 8 GeV. The data contain 6500 events in the R peak (M2=2.72±0.02 GeV2, Γ=139±31 MeV). The R shape is consistent with either a single Breit-Wigner or several wide resonances, as suggested by bubble-chamber experiments, but inconsistent with the series of narrow resonances reported by the CERN missing-mass group.
