Study of inclusive baryon - anti-baryon pair production of P or Lambda in two photon processes

Inclusive baryon-antibaryon pair production was studied in two-photon events which were collected at the e+e− collider TRISTAN, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 303 pbt?1. Correlations between a baryon and an antibaryon were studied for their flavors (p or Λ) and their momentum vectors. The experimental results were compared with the expectations from a jet-fragmentation Monte Carlo simulation. We have found that although the ratios of the cross sections of different baryon-flavor combinations are consistent with the Monte Carlo expectations, the cross section shows an excess over the Monte Carlo expectation in a low invariant-mass region of final-state particles at large angles, that indicates a significant contribution from higher-order QCD or non-perturbative effects. The experimental data show no narrow azimuthal-angle correlation, which is expected from a jet-fragmentation Monte Carlo. A search for exclusive Λ pair production has also been made. We have no candidates and have obtained the upper limit for the cross section.

Photon scattering from C-12 and He-4 nuclei near the Delta(1232) resonance

Angular distributions for photon scattering from C12 and He4 have been measured using continuous wave bremsstrahlung from the Saskatchewan Accelerator Laboratory pulse stretcher ring. Data for carbon were taken at 158.8, 195.2, 197.2, 247.2, and 290.2 MeV end-point energies, and for helium were taken at an end-point energy of 158.8 MeV. A large NaI(Tl) gamma ray spectrometer with 1.7% resolution was used to detect the scattered photons at laboratory scattering angles ranging from 20° to 150°. The excellent energy resolution of the NaI detector allowed a separation of elastic from inelastic photon scattering for the first time at these energies. The angular distributions for elastic scattering are in only fair agreement with delta-hole theory and theory based on the optical theorem at forward angles, and completely disagree with theory at backward angles. Measured cross sections for inelastic scattering leading to the 4.43 MeV state in carbon are small compared to the elastic scattering at forward angles, but are dominant at backward angles. This experiment is the first to separate elastic from inelastic photon scattering at these energies.

A Measurement of the tau leptonic branching fractions

A sample of 25000 Z 0 → τ + τ − events collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP in 1991 and 1992 is used to measure the leptonic branching fractions of the τ lepton. The results are B(τ → eν ν ) = (17.51 ± 0.39) % and B(τ → μν ν ) = (17.02 ± 0.31) %. The ratio of the muon and electron couplings to the weak charged current is measured to be g μ g e = 1.000 ± 0.013 , satisfying e-μ universality. The leptonic branching fraction corrected to the value for a massless lepton, assuming e-μ universality, is found to be B(τ → lν ν ) = (17.50 ± 0.25) %.

The fragmentation topology of28Si at 3.7A GeV and 14.6A GeV and32S at 200A GeV in reactions with emulsion nuclei is presented. The fragmentation cross sections are very similar at all three energies. A statistical percolation model can qualitatively describe the data forZ≥ 6. The He production is underestimated and the 3 ≤Z ≤ 5 fragments overestimated by this model.

Transverse momentum compensation in pi+ p interactions at 250-GeV/c

Compensation of transverse momentum is studied in π+p interactions at 250 GeV/c. SignificantpT-transfer is found between c.m.s. hemispheres. With respect to the beam axis transverse momentum is compensated over the whole event, with respect to the sphericity axis mainly within one hemisphere. The highestpT in the event is mainly compensated by increased multiplicity. The QGSM and FRITIOF models qualitatively reproduce these effects, but important differences are observed.

A Study of single photon production in e+ e- annihilation at S**(1/2) = 58-GeV

We have studied single photon production in e + e − annihilation based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 164.1 pb −1 at s =58 GeV . The single photon yield is consistent with the prediction of the standard model with three light neutrino species. No anomalous signal has been observed. From this result left- and right-handed scalar electrons in the mass degenerate case are excluded at 90% CL below 44.4 GeV/ c 2 for the massless photino.

Local particle densities and global multiplicities in central heavy ion interactions at 3.7-A/GeV, 14.6-A/GeV, 60-A/GeV and 200-A/GeV

The energy and centrality dependence of local particle pseudorapidity densities as well as validity of various parametrizations of the distributions are examined. The dispersion, σ, of the rapidity density distribution of produced particles varies slowly with centrality and is 0.80, 0.98, 1.21 and 1.41 for central interactions at 3.7, 14.6, 60 and 200A GeV incident energy, respectively, σ is found to be independent of the size of the interacting system at fixed energy. A novel way of representing the window dependence of the multiplicity as normalized variance versus inverse average multiplicity is outlined.

pi0 and eta meson production in pi+ p and K+ p collisions at 250-GeV/c

We report on a study of inclusiveπ0 and η meson production inπ+p andK+p interactions at 250 GeV/c beam momentum. The Feynman-x spectrum ofπ0 is very similar in shape and normalization to that of negatively charged particles produced in the same experiment. The results are compared with data at other energies and with FRITIOF model predictions. This model overestimates the η cross section by a factor of 2.5. It reproduces theπ0 cross section correctly, but predicts a too hardπ0x distribution.
