Charged multiplicity and π 0 cross sections for π − p inelastic interactions at 70 GeV/ c are presented. The data were obtained from an exposure of the BEBC bubble chamber equipped with a track sensitive target (TST) to an unseparated negative beam at the CERN SPS. About 10 000 events were used for the charged multiplicity study, and about 2000 Dalitz pairs for the π 0 production analysis. A total of 12 e + e − pairs with a mass higher than the π 0 mass were found and analysed in terms of η or ω Dalitz pairs or decay pairs of vector mesons. Comparisons with data at other energies are made in terms of charged prong, π 0 cross sections, and of multiplicity parameters. The moments of longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions of the π 0 are determined and compared to the predictions of quark counting rule models.

A study of strange particle production in muon neutrino charged current interactions has been performed using the data from the NOMAD experiment. Yields of neutral strange particles K0s, Lambda, AntiLambda have been measured. Mean multiplicities are reported as a function of the event kinematic variables Enu, W2 and Q2 as well as of the variables describing particle behaviour within a hadronic jet: xF, z and pT2. Decays of resonances and heavy hyperons with identified K0s and Lambda in the final state have been analyzed. Clear signals corresponding to K*+-, Sigma*+-, Xi- and Sigma0 have been observed.

We report the first precision measurements of the scaled momentum, the charge multiplicity, and the thrust of hadronic jets in the Breit frame in Deep Inelastic Scattering ν μ N and ν ̄ μ N charged current events over the Q 2 range from 1 to 100 GeV 2 . The neutrino data, obtained in the NOMAD experiment at the CERN SPS, extend the Q 2 -evolution of these parameters by two orders of magnitude, and with commensurate precision, when compared to those reported by the ep and e + e − experiments.

Properties of the hadron multiplicity distributions in 280 GeV/c μ+p interactions have been investigated. The c.m. energy dependence in the range from 4 to 20 GeV of the total charged multiplicities are presented. No variation faster than logarithmic is seen in the energy range of this experiment. Comparison with νp and <math altimg="si1.gif"><ovl type="bar" style="s">ν</ovl><rm>p</rm></math> data at lower energy has been made and shows good agreement between μ+p and <math altimg="si1.gif"><ovl type="bar" style="s">ν</ovl><rm>p</rm></math> total charged multiplicities. It has been found that the average forward multiplicity (charged hadrons with xF > 0) exceeds the average backward multiplicity (charged hadrons with xF < 0) in the whole energy range and presents a different energy variation. The average forward multiplicity has been compared to e+e− data and shows a similar dependence on energy. Little correlation was observed between the forward and backward multiplicities indicating that the current and target regions fragment almost independently.

HADRON MULTIPLICITY VARIATION WITH Q**2 AND SCALE BREAKING OF THE HADRON DISTRIBUTIONS IN DEEP INELASTIC MUON - PROTON SCATTERING

Measurements are presented of the variation with Q 2 (scaling violation) of the hadron multiplicity in deep inelastic muon-proton scattering. An increase in the average multiplicity of both the charged hadrons and K 0 mesons is observed with increasing Q 2 or x Bj for fixed centre-of-mass energy W . The study of the shape of the effective fragmentation function D h ( z , W , Q 2 ) shows that the increase of the particle yield with Q 2 takes place for low z particles. The variation of the hadron distributions with Q 2 is also studied in the current fragmentation region where a decrease in multiplicity is observed. Such effects are expected from QCD.

Charged particle multiplicities are studied in proton-proton collisions in the forward region at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 7\;$TeV with data collected by the LHCb detector. The forward spectrometer allows access to a kinematic range of $2.0<\eta<4.8$ in pseudorapidity, momenta down to $2\;$GeV/$c$ and transverse momenta down to $0.2\;$GeV/$c$. The measurements are performed using minimum-bias events with at least one charged particle in the kinematic acceptance. The results are presented as functions of pseudorapidity and transverse momentum and are compared to predictions from several Monte Carlo event generators.

We have studied hadronic events produced at LEP at a centre-of-mass energy of 161 GeV. We present distributions of event shape variables, jet rates, charged particle momentum spectra and multiplicities. We determine the strong coupling strength to be αs(161 GeV) = 0.101±0.005(stat.)±0.007(syst.), the mean charged particle multiplicity to be 〈nch〉(161 GeV) = 24.46 ± 0.45(stat.) ± 0.44(syst.) and the position of the peak in the ξp = ln(1/xp) distribution to be ξ0(161 GeV) = 4.00 ±0.03(stat.)±0.04(syst.). These results are compared to data taken at lower centre-of-mass energies and to analytic QCD or Monte Carlo predictions. Our measured value of αs(161 GeV) is consistent with other measurements of αs. Within the current statistical and systematic uncertainties, the PYTHIA, HERWIG and ARIADNE QCD Monte Carlo models and analytic calculations are in overall agreement with our measurements. The COJETS QCD Monte Carlo is in general agreement with the data for momentum weighted distributions like Thrust, but predicts a significantly larger charged particle multiplicity than is observed experimentally.

Measurement of f(c --> D*+ X), f(b --> D*+ X) and Gamma(c anti-c)/Gamma(had) using D*+- mesons.

The production rates of D^*+/- mesons in charm and bottom events at centre-of-mass energies of about 91 GeV and the partial width of primary cc(bar) pairs in hadronic Z^0 decays have been measured at LEP using almost 4.4 million hadronic Z^0 decays collected with the OPAL detector between 1990 and 1995. Using a combination of several charm quark tagging methods based on fully and partially reconstructed D^*+/- mesons, and a bottom tag based on identified muons and electrons, the hadronisation fractions of charm and bottom quarks into D^*+/- mesons have been found to be: f(b -> D^*+ X) = 0.173 +/- 0.016 +/- 0.012 and f(c -> D^*+ X) = 0.222 +/- 0.014 +/- 0.014 The fraction of cc(bar) events in hadronic Z^0 decays, Gamma_cc(bar)/Gamma_had = Gamma(Z^0 -> cc(bar))/Gamma(Z^0 -> hadrons), is determined to be Gamma_cc(bar)/Gamma_had = 0.180 +/- 0.011 +/- 0.012 +/- 0.006 In all cases the first error is statistical, and the second one systematic. The last error quoted for Gamma_cc(bar)/Gamma_had is due to external branching ratios.

We report on properties of hadronic events from e + e − annihilation observed by the ALEPH detector at the large Electron Positron Collider at CERN. The center-of-mass energy was s =91.0−91.3 GeV . Measured distributions of the global event-shape variables sphericity, aplanarity, thrust and minor value, and of the inclusive variables x p , p ⊥ in , p ⊥ out and y are presented. We measure a mean charged multiplicity in hadronic events of 〈 N ch 〉=21.3±0.1 (statistical)±0.6 (systematic). The data are in good agreement with QCD-based models which use the leading-logarithm approximation, and are less well described by a model using O( α s 2 ) QCD.
