This paper presents measurements of \k\ and \lam\ production in neutral current, deep inelastic scattering of 26.7 GeV electrons and 820 GeV protons in the kinematic range $ 10 < Q~{2} < 640 $ GeV$~2$, $0.0003 < x < 0.01$, and $y > 0.04$. Average multiplicities for \k\ and \lam\ production are determined for transverse momenta \ \ptr\ $> 0.5 $ GeV and pseudorapidities $\left| \eta \right| < 1.3$. The multiplicities favour a stronger strange to light quark suppression in the fragmentation chain than found in $e~+ e~-$ experiments. The production properties of \k's in events with and without a large rapidity gap with respect to the proton direction are compared. The ratio of neutral \k's to charged particles per event in the measured kinematic range is, within the present statistics, the same in both samples.

The differential cross sections for antiproton elastic scattering on 4 He at 192.8 MeV/ c are measured. The annihilation cross section σ a = (377.6 ± 8.0) mb, the elastic cross section σ el = (206.3 ± 6.6) mb and the total p 4 He interaction cross section σ tot = (583.9 ± 10.4) mb are determined. The ratio of the real to imaginary part of the forward p 4 He amplitude is found: π =−0.17± 0.33 0.24 . Partial wave analysis reveals that the S, P and D waves are essential in this energy region.

Inelastic p - 3 He events at 192.8 MeV/ c are detected with a self-shunted streamer chamber. The measured reaction cross section is 392±23.8mb. This result is briefly discussed and compared with other reaction cross sections for low-energy p with light nuclei.

It is shown that approximately 8 percent of secondary π- mesons are produced from the meson resonance decay. Inclusive charged pion production is studied in an exposure of BEBC, filled with hydrogen, to an incidentK+ beam of 70 GeV/c. Total cross sections for pion production and inclusive longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions of π−'s and of positive particles are presented and compared with data at lower energies. Earlier evidence for scaling in the fragmentation regions is confirmed. The central region π− cross section increases proportionally topLAB−1/4; positive particles show almost no energy dependence atx=0. Particle ratios π+/π− are studied as a function ofx andy* and a comparison with 70 GeV/cK−p data is made. Analysis of structure functions for (ππ) pairs and of particle production associated with π± triggers at large |x| in the context of quark/parton models, provides qualitative evidence for the diquark-quark structure of the proton.

The inclusive production of Ξ + and Ξ − hyperons is investigated in K + p interactions at 32 GeV/ c . The production cross sections, 36.4±9 μ b for the Ξ + and 6.5±3 μ b for the Ξ − , are rising strongly with energy similarly to Λ and Λ production in K + p interactions. The Ξ + are produced preferentially in the forward direction in the c.m.s., while the Ξ − are produced dominantly backwards. The average transverse momenta 〈p T 〉 Ξ + =0.73±0.09 GeV /c and 〈 p T 〉 Ξ − =0.58±0.09 GeV/ c .
