The elastic scattering of K+ mesons on protons is studied at 3.5 and 5 GeV/c. The total elastic cross-sections are found to be (4.36±0.36) mb and (3.82±0.41) mb respectively. The differential elastic cross-sections, which exhibit characteristic diffraction peaks, are fitted by dσ/dt=(dσ/dt)0eαt, giving α=(3.85±0.12) and (4.70±0.21) (GeV/c)−2 for the two momenta respectively, with |t|⪝0.65 (GeV/c)2. The results are compared to those at neighbouring energies, giving some support to the presence of a real part of the forward scattering amplitude. The diffraction peak shows definite shrinking with increasing momenta. The data are examined in the light of models for high-energy scattering.

We present the results of a spin determination of the g 1 − (1640) meson from an analysis of its dipion decay mode (π − π 0 ), and find that spin three (or maybe greater) is favored [1,2]. We also report on the observation of an isospin one KK̄ enhancement at 1640 MeV which is consistent with a new decay mode of the g meson. A relative branching ratio of (K K ̄ /ππ) = 8 ± 3 8 % is obtain from our analysis.
The values of the cross sections were presented for reactions with KS finalstates for visible KS decays only.
The cross section value is corrected for invisible KS decay.
We have measured the p¯n differential elastic cross section for −t≥0.15 (GeV/c)2. We compare our data with existing data from p¯p and np elastic scattering experiments in this energy region. Our data show a dip in the cross section at −t≃0.45 (GeV/c)2 and a secondary maximum at −t≃0.7 (GeV/c)2. We see no evidence for backward peaking in p¯n elastic scattering at this energy. Evidence is presented for I=1, t-channel exchange in N¯N scattering.

Results on the following π−p reactions involving a hyperon are studied at 4.5 and 6.0 GeV/c from a high-statistics bubble-chamber experiment. (1) π−p→(Λ, Σ0)K0: Differential cross sections and hyperon polarizations are presented. Comparison with the line-reversed reactions K¯N→(Λ, Σ0)π indicates the failure of the predictions of K*(890) and K*(1420) exchange degeneracy. Effective trajectories for these two reactions are compared. Shrinkage is observed in K¯N→Λπ and not in π−p→ΛK0. (2) π−p→(Λ, Σ0)K*(890)0: Differential cross sections, hyperon polarizations, and K*(890)0 density-matrix elements are determined. ΛK*(890)0 decay correlations are found to impose strong constraints on the scattering amplitudes. The data indicate that both natural- and unnatural-parity exchanges contribute large, but opposite, Λ polarizations. This behavior cannot be explained by a simple exchange model utilizing K and the exchange-degenerate K*(890) and K*(1420) only. Additional trajectories or absorption effects are required to obtain the observed Λ-polarization effects. Comparison of ΛK*(890)0 and Σ0K*(890)0 indicates the greater importance of unnatural-parity exchange in the former reaction. We observe no evidence for deviations from isospin predictions in ΛK*(890)0 production where K*(890)0→K+π− and KS0π0. (3) π−p→ΛK*(1420)0 and ΛK*(1300)0: K*(1420)0 density-matrix elements satisfying positivity constraints are determined allowing for s-wave interference effects. Evidence of the existence of a narrow K*(1300)0→Kππ with a dominant K+ρ− decay mode is observed in the 4.5- and 6-GeV/c data. (4) Σ(1385), Λ(1405), Λ(1520) production: Differential cross sections for the quasi-two-body reactions π−p→Y0K0, where Y0 is Λ(1405), Λ(1520), or Σ(1385)0, are presented and found to have a very similar flat slope in the forward direction. Data for forward K+ scattering in the reaction π−p→Σ(1385)−K+ are presented and discussed. It is argued that this forward peak cannot be explained by kinematic reflection or an s-channel effect and therefore must be due to either two-particle exchange or a single exotic exchange in the t channel.

FIT FOR FORWARD CROSS SECTION AND SLOPE.
Final results are presented of the analysis of the elastic channel in an exposure of 40 000 pictures at each of the four incident K + momenta 2.11, 2.31, 2.5 and 2.72 GeV/ c taken in the 1.5 m British National Hydrogen Bubble Chamber at the 8 GeV/ c proton synchrotron at the Rutherford High Energy Laboratory. Differential cross sections are presented and the results are compared with other published data. A Legendre polynomial analysis requires partial waves up to G wave at all momenta. For the backward peak, visible at each momentum, the slope and the intercept are calculated. A comparison of the forward peak is made with extrapolations from Regge models fitted at higher momenta.

We have measured the total cross section for electron-positron annihilation into three or more hadrons, with at least two charged particles in the final state. The measurement was made at a center-of-mass energy of 4 GeV with a 2π−sr nonmagnetic detector. With 88 events detected, we obtain a model-independent lower limit on the hadron production cross section of 9.6 ± 1.4 nb; a calculation of detection efficiency based on invariant phase-space production of pions leads to a total cross section of 26 ± 6 nb. This cross section is 4.7 ± 1.1 times the theoretical total cross section for e+e−→μ+μ−. The average charged multiplicity is n¯=4.2±0.6.

The spin rotation parameter R in elastic proton-proton scattering has been determined at incident momenta 6 and 16 GeV/ c in the interval from t = −0.18 (GeV/ c ) 2 to −0.54 (GeV/ c ) 2 . R pp at 16 GeV/ c is close to the val obtained for R in π − p elastic scattering at the same incident momentum. Equality of R pp ( s , t ) and R π p ( s , t ) is expected if Pomeron exchange dominates and if factorization holds. The t -dependence of R at 16 GeV/ c is consistent with weak helicity flip.

Combining the 1800 events so obtained with 22 000 elastic events obtained from normal scanning (| t | > 0.06 GeV 2 ), the real part of the elastic scattering amplitude was found to be (+25 ± 10)% of the imaginary part. Evidence is found for a change in slope in the differential cross-section distribution, from 9.8 ± 0.6 GeV −2 in the | t |-range below 0.1 GeV 2 to 7.1 ± 0.2 GeV −2 in the range 0.12 < | t | ⩽ 0.4 GeV 2 .

We have searched the mass region 3.2 to 5.9 GeV for evidence of narrow resonances in e+e−→hadrons. We find no evidence for any such resonances other than the ψ(3695) in this region with a sensitivity ranging from about 12 to 45% of the integrated cross section of the ψ(3695). The more stringent bounds apply to resonances of a few MeV width, while the looser bounds apply to resonances of up to 20 MeV width.

The differential cross sections of the elastic p p reaction have been measured at 1.2, 1.4, 1.8 and 2.6 GeV/ c incident p momentum. The measurements have been performed at the CERN PS using a system of multiwire proportional chambers. The angular region covers scattering angles from 0 to ∼200 mrad. Interference effects between the Coulomb and the nuclear amplitudes are used to derive the ratio of the real to imaginary part of the forward nuclear amplitude. Most of these events are detected at or above a center-of-mass energy of 4 GeV. New results on inclusive lambda polarization in K − p interactions at 14.3 GeV/ c are presented. At the kaon fragmentation vertex, the polarization is compared to that from inclusive experiments at lower momenta and to that from two-body reactions with a Λ. As predicted by the triple-Regge model with N α (or N γ ) exchange, the polarization is found to be independent of s and M X 2 / s . In particular it has the same value as that found in the two-body reactions.

The reaction γ V p → p π + π − was studied in the W , Q 2 region 1.3–2.8 GeV, 0.3–1.4 GeV 2 using the streamer chamber at DESY. A detailed analysis of rho production via γ V p→ ϱ 0 p is presented. Near threshold rho production has peripheral and non-peripheral contributions of comparable magnitude. At higher energies ( W > 2 GeV) the peripheral component is dominant. The Q 2 dependence of σ ( γ V p→ ϱ 0 p) follows that of the rho propagator as predicted by VDM. The slope of d σ /d t at 〈 Q 2 〉 = 0.4 and 0.8 GeV 2 is within errors equal to its value at Q 2 = 0. The overall shape of the ϱ 0 is t dependent as in photoproduction, but is independent of Q 2 . The decay angular distribution shows that longitudinal rhos dominate in the threshold region. At higher energies transverse rhos are dominant. Rho production by transverse photons proceeds almost exclusively by natural parity exchange, σ T N ⩾ (0.83 ± 0.06) σ T for 2.2 < W < 2.8 GeV. The s -channel helicity-flip amplitudes are small compared to non-flip amplitudes. The ratio R = σ L / σ T was determined assuming s -channel helicity conservation. We find R = ξ 2 Q 2 / M ϱ 2 with ξ 2 ≈ 0.4 for 〈 W 〉 = 2.45 GeV. Interference between rho production amplitudes from longitudinal and transverse photons is observed. With increasing energy the phase between the two amplitudes decreases. The observed features of rho electroproduction are consistent with a dominantly diffractive production mechanism for W > 2 GeV.

We present the results of a bubble chamber study of the pure-isospinI = 0 reaction K−p → ωΛ at 7 incident momenta between 1.934 and 2.516 GeV/c. An energy-dependent partial-wave analysis in the c.m. energy range (2070 ÷ 2436) MeV including these new data confirms the coupling of theG7 Λ(2100) to this channel and yields evidence for the existence of a new resonant stateD3or P3 Λ(2325). A semi-energy-independent partial-wave analysis is also carried out, by means of all available data from the threshold of the K−p → ωΛ reaction up to 2436 MeV. We compare these data with data from other experimets and to predictions made by the latest phase-shift solution. We find, in general, good agreement with other data in the few regions of overlap. The reactions Λ p → Λ p, → Σ ± p π ∓ , → Λ p π + π − and → Σ 0 p have been studied in the SLAC 82 inch bubble chamber for incident Λ particles in the momentum range 1–10 GeV/ c . The reactions are found to be qualitatively similar to corresponding nucleon-nucleon reactions. In particular, the slope parameter B in the elastic cross section d σ /d t = A e Bt has been determined as a function of incident momentum and found to be consistent with that for proton-proton elastic scattering. Angular distributions for the inelastic channels are compared with those of similar nucleon-nucleon reactions, and predictions of relevant exchange models.

We have analyzed the reaction p¯n→π+π−π− in a deuterium bubble-chamber experiment for incident antiproton momenta between 1.09 and 1.43 GeV/c. Data are analyzed in terms of the Veneziano model. The magnitudes of the spin-parity functions are determined independently in an analysis of the spin-state composition of the p¯n system. The amount of each spin-dependent Veneziano amplitude is contrained to these values in the construction of a Veneziano model. The model is found to be generally in good agreement with the data. This represents a more rigorous test of the Veneziano model than previously published works.

REVISED DATA (J. D. LESIKAR, PRIV COMM, 19 JUN 1981). NOW CORRECTED FOR COULOMB-NUCLEAR INTERFERENCE. IN ADDITION, THE LOWEST MOMENTUM DATA POINT IS NOW KNOWN TO BE IN ERROR.
We have measured inclusive electron production in multiprong events produced by e+e− annihilation in the center-of-mass energy range 3.9-7.4 GeV. We find the electron momentum spectra are consistent with the electrons coming mainly from decays of charmed particles, with a smaller contribution from decays of the τ lepton. From our data we calculate the average branching ratio for charmed particles to decay into an electron plus additional particles to be (8.2±1.9)%.
