Seventy-one events containing charmed-particle decays have been observed in an experiment using the SLAC Hybrid Facility exposed to a backward-scattered photon beam. Several improvements were made to the apparatus since the previous experiment on charm photoproduction. Results for the charmed-meson lifetimes are consistent with the published results from the previous experiment and the two data samples have been combined yielding a total sample of 136 charm events. After imposing rigorous cuts, 50 neutral, 48 charged, and 2 charged/neutral ambiguous decays remain. From these, the charmed-meson lifetimes are measured to be &=(8.6±1.3−0.3+0 .7)×10−13 sec, &=(6.1±0.9±0.3)×10 −13 sec, and their ratio &=1.4±0.3− 0.1+0.2. The total charm cross section at a photon energy of 20 GeV has been measured to be (62±8−10+15) nb. There is evidence for both DD¯X and D¯Λc+X production with σD¯Λc+X/σcharm=(71± 11±6)%.

Production of rho0 and f in pi- p Interactions at 16-GeV/c and Separation Into Fragmentation and Central Components

The production of ρ 0 (770) and f(1270) is studied in π − p interactions at 16 GeV/ c . By comparison with inclusive K ∗0 production in the reaction K − p → K ∗0 + anything, and with inclusive ρ 0 production in the reaction pp → ρ 0 + anything, it is found that the data can be interpreted in terms of two production processes: the central production of resonances and the fragmentation of the beam particle. For the π − p reaction, the inclusive ρ 0 beam fragmentation cross section is 3.1 ± 0.3 mb while that for central production is 1.6 ± 0.5 mb. The ρ 0 central production cross section is consistent with increasing with energy as ln s behaviour. The ratio of ρ 0 to π − inclusive cross sections (excluding the leading π − ) is ∼0.2, independent of energy. The ρ 0 to π − ratio increases as a function of p T to a constant value of ∼ 1 2 above 1 GeV/ c . The ρ (charged and neutral) and f decays account for (25 ± 4)% and (1.4 ± 0.3)%, respectively, of all pions produced.

Study of the Inclusive Reactions $K^+ p \to p$ X and $K^+ p \to p K^0$ X at 32-{GeV}/$c$

The inclusive production of protons with laboratory momentum less than 1.2 GeV/ c is studied in the reacion K + p → pX at 32 GeV/ c . A comparison with the 16 GeV/ c data shows ahat the total cross section remains practically constant while the structure function shows a clear energy dependence. The data are compatible with a tripls-Regge expansion and with factorization. About 40% of the events include a K 0 in the final state. The analysis of the K 0 pX sample indicates a sizeable contribution of beam fragmentation and abundant K 890 ∗ and Δ ++ production.

We present a Next-to-Leading order perturbative QCD analysis of world data on the spin dependent structure functions $g_1^p, g_1^n$, and $g_1^d$, including the new experimental information on the $Q^2$ dependence of $g_1^n$. Careful attention is paid to the experimental and theoretical uncertainties. The data constrain the first moments of the polarized valence quark distributions, but only qualitatively constrain the polarized sea quark and gluon distributions. The NLO results are used to determine the $Q^2$ dependence of the ratio $g_1/F_1$ and evolve the experimental data to a constant $Q^2 = 5 GeV^2$. We determine the first moments of the polarized structure functions of the proton and neutron and find agreement with the Bjorken sum rule.

We present a next-to-leading order QCD analysis of the presently available data on the spin structure function g1 including the final data from the Spin Muon Collaboration. We present results for the first moments of the proton, deuteron, and neutron structure functions, and determine singlet and nonsinglet parton distributions in two factorization schemes. We also test the Bjorken sum rule and find agreement with the theoretical prediction at the level of 10%.

Measurement of the Neutral Current to Charged Current Ratio for Anti-neutrinos Proton Inclusive Scattering

Inspire Record 11799 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.23944

The Fermilab wide-band antineutrino beam incident on the hydrogen-filled 15-foot bubble chamber was used to study ν¯p neutral-current interactions. The u=x(1−y) distribution is presented for both the neutral- and the charged-current data sample. Fitting the neutral-current u distribution to the prediction of a simple quark-parton model measures the Weinberg angle. By using recent measurements of the neutral-to-charged-current cross-section ratio for νp interactions (Rp), we find the corresponding ratio for ν¯p interactions (R¯p) to be 0.36±0.06.

Beam Energy Dependence of the Third Harmonic of Azimuthal Correlations in Au+Au Collisions at RHIC

We present results from a harmonic decomposition of two-particle azimuthal correlations measured with the STAR detector in Au+Au collisions for energies ranging from $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7$ GeV to 200 GeV. The third harmonic $v_3^2\{2\}=\langle \cos3(\phi_1-\phi_2)\rangle$, where $\phi_1-\phi_2$ is the angular difference in azimuth, is studied as a function of the pseudorapidity difference between particle pairs $\Delta\eta = \eta_1-\eta_2$. Non-zero {\vthree} is directly related to the previously observed large-$\Delta\eta$ narrow-$\Delta\phi$ ridge correlations and has been shown in models to be sensitive to the existence of a low viscosity Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) phase. For sufficiently central collisions, $v_3^2\{2\}$ persist down to an energy of 7.7 GeV suggesting that QGP may be created even in these low energy collisions. In peripheral collisions at these low energies however, $v_3^2\{2\}$ is consistent with zero. When scaled by pseudorapidity density of charged particle multiplicity per participating nucleon pair, $v_3^2\{2\}$ for central collisions shows a minimum near {\snn}$=20$ GeV.
