We have measured the electromagnetic form factor of the charged pion by direct scattering of 100-GeV/c π− from stationary electrons in a liquid-hydrogen target at Fermilab. The deviations from the pointlike pion-scattering cross section may be characterized by a root-mean-square charge radius for the pion of 〈rπ2〉12=0.56±0.04 F.

Inelastic Photoproduction of omega and rho+- Mesons

Nelson, C.A., Jr. ; May, E.N. ; Abramson, J. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.D 17 (1978) 647, 1978.
Inspire Record 4373 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.24401

We report measurements of inelastic photoproduction of ω and ρ± mesons from hydrogen and deuterium at incident photon energies in the range 7.5-10.5 GeV. For ωΔ and ρ−Δ++ production, differential cross sections dσdt′ and spin density matrices are presented. For higher missing masses the cross sections dσdMX2 and invariant structure functions F(x) are also given. The data are compared to a one-pion-exchange model. We conclude that pion exchange is dominant for inelastic ω photoproduction, but unimportant for ρ±.

Electroproduction of K+ Mesons Along the Virtual Photon Direction

We report measurements of kaon electroproduction from hydrogen and deuterium targets carried out at the Wilson Synchrotron Laboratory at Cornell University. The reactions γVp→K+X0, K+Γ, and K+Σ0 were studied in the kinematic region 2.15≤W≤3.1 GeV and 1.2<Q2<4.0 GeV2 as a function of Q2, W, and ω. The K+Σ0 cross sections fall much more rapidly with increasing Q2 than the K+Λ cross sections so that K+Σ0KΛ→0 as Q2 increases.

The Slope of Forward Elastic pi+ p Scattering from 4.4-GeV/c to 6.0-GeV/c

Rey, C.A. ; Poirier, J.A. ; Lennox, Arlene J. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.D 15 (1977) 59, 1977.
Inspire Record 109729 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.24605

Angular distributions for π+p→π+p were measured for 13 incident-pion momenta from 4.4 to 6.0 GeV/c and for −t less than ∼0.1 (GeV/c)2. This experiment was performed at the Zero Gradient Synchrotron of Argonne National Laboratory, where a focusing magnetic spectrometer and a scintillation-counter hodoscope were used. In fitting the angular distributions the strong-interaction contribution was parameterized by an exponential form exp(bt); the Coulomb interference was also included. The resulting values of the slope parameter for |t|<∼0.1 (GeV/c)2 are presented for each incident beam momentum.

Energy and Momentum Distributions of Muoproduced Hadrons

We present inclusive distributions for final-state hadrons produced in inelastic muon-proton scattering. Over the total energy range 2<W<4.7 GeV and the momentum-transfer range 0.3<Q2<4.5 GeV2, the fractional momentum and energy distributions approximately scale. Distributions in transverse momentum display an interesting two-component behavior. They show no dependence on the virtual-photon "mass squared" Q2, and have average values typical of other hadron-initiated reactions. A comparison of our distributions with those seen in e+e− annihilation and neutrino-nucleon scattering shows agreement, in support of quark-parton fragmentation ideas. We further break these distributions down by event topology.

Rho+- Photoproduction at 9.6-GeV

Abramson, J. ; Andrews, D.E. ; Busnello, R. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.Lett. 36 (1976) 1432, 1976.
Inspire Record 108497 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.21105

ρ± photoproduction from hydrogen and deuterium at 9.6 GeV is studied. The reactions γp→ρ+n and γp→ρ−Δ++(1236) have cross sections much larger than expected from pion exchange alone. t distributions do not show the sharp forward peak characteristic of one-pion exchange contributions. Density matrices indicate an isotropic decay distribution. The ratio of ρ+ to ρ− production on deuterium differs from unity and by the amount expected from interference between ρ and A2 exchanges. We conclude that π exchange is unimportant for ρ± photoproduction, and infer that ρ exchange dominates.

Elastic Photoproduction of omega Mesons from Hydrogen, Deuterium, and Complex Nuclei

We have studied ω photoproduction using 7.5- to 10.5-GeV tagged photons. Cross sections from hydrogen lie 22% below the bubble chamber results of Ballam et al., but have a similar slope. Density matrices indicate approximate s-channel helicity conservation. The proton-neutron cross-section difference is midway between zero and the value suggested by the γp−γn total-cross-section difference. Fits to the cross sections for D, Be, and Cu and those for Be, C, Al, Cu, and Pb from a previous experiment yield σωN=25.4±2.7 mb and γω24π=7.6±1.2.

Inelastic Muon-Proton Scattering: Multiplicity Distributions, and Prong Cross-Sections

In a streamer-chamber experiment at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, we observed hadron production in inelastic collisions of 14-GeV positive muons in a liquid hydrogen target. We report on the experiment, the analysis, and the resulting cross sections for hadronic prongs as well as the charged-hadron multiplicity distributions.

Some Features of the Reaction p p --> Delta++ (1236) n at 6-GeV/c

Mountz, J.D. ; Smith, Gerald A. ; Lennox, Arlene J. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.D 12 (1975) 1211, 1975.
Inspire Record 99855 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.24861

Approximately 12 000 examples of the reaction pp→Δ++(1236)n have been identified at 6 GeV / c in a spark-chamber experiment performed at the Argonne National Laboratory Zero Gradient Synchrotron. The experimental invariant-mass and momentum-transfer-squared distributions are in agreement with predictions of the Chew-Low one-pion-exchange model, suitably modified to account for form factors or absorption. The data have been extrapolated from the physical region to the pion pole. It is found that the Dürr-Pilkuhn and Benecke-Dürr models, in conjunction with quadratic extrapolations in t, reproduce the known on-mass-shell dependence of the cross section for the elastic π+p scattering.

Phys.Rev.Lett. 34 (1975) 1115, 1975.
Inspire Record 98990 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.21921

We report new measurements of the inclusive electroproduction of forward protons carried out at the Wilson Synchrotron Laboratory at Cornell University. Data were taken with deuterium at the (W, Q2) points (2.15 GeV, 1.2 GeV2), (2.15, 4.0), and (3.11, 1.2); data were taken with hydrogen at these points and at the points (2.15, 2.0), (2.67, 3.3), and (3.11, 1.7). The invariant structure function is presented in terms of W, Q2, and ω.
