The production of jets is studied in deep-inelastic e+p scattering at low negative four momentum transfer squared 5<Q^2<100 GeV^2 and at inelasticity 0.2<y<0.7 using data recorded by the H1 detector at HERA in the years 1999 and 2000, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 43.5 pb^-1. Inclusive jet, 2-jet and 3-jet cross sections as well as the ratio of 3-jet to 2-jet cross sections are measured as a function of Q^2 and jet transverse momentum. The 2-jet cross section is also measured as a function of the proton momentum fraction xi. The measurements are well described by perturbative quantum chromodynamics at next-to-leading order corrected for hadronisation effects and are subsequently used to extract the strong coupling alpha_s.
A measurement of the direct production of photons with high transverse momentum from\(\bar pp\) collisions at\(\sqrt s= 630\) GeV is presented. The structure of events containing a high transverse momentum photon is studied. The results support predictions from QCD theory.
We present cross sections for coherent and non-coherent production of one, two and three pions in pd reactions at 19 GeV/ c . The mass distributions of the two pion non-coherent channels are studied. Strong single Δ(1236) and also some double Δ production is observed. Clear evidence for ϱ production is seen.
Enhanced production of strange baryons and anti-baryons at central rapidity in S-W and S-z.sbnd;S with respect to p-A reactions has been reported by the CERN experiments WA85 and WA94. The WA97 experiment is extending such a study to Pb Pb collisions making use of the newly developed silicon pixel detectors. Results on Λ, Ξ − and Ω − production in Pb Pb collisions at 158 A GeV/ c at central rapidity are presented. Transverse mass spectra and particle ratios are presented. Hyperon yields are given as a function of the collision centrality and compared with those obtained from p-Pb collisions using the same experimental setup.
Preliminary results from WA97 measurements on Λ, Ξ and Ω production in lead-lead and proton-lead collisions are presented, along with a comparison of WA97 proton-lead data with previous WA85 proton-tungsten results. The ratio Ω gX seems to be enhanced in lead initiated reactions compared to proton initiated reactions.
Production cross sections of K$^+$ and K$^-$ mesons have been measured in C+C collisions at beam energies per nucleon below and near the nucleon-nucleon threshold. At a given beam energy, the spectral slopes of the K$^-$ mesons are significantly steeper than the ones of the K$^+$ mesons. The excitation functions for K$^+$ and K$^-$ mesons nearly coincide when correcting for the threshold energy. In contrast, the K$^+$ yield exceeds the K$^-$ yield by a factor of about 100 in proton-proton collisions at beam energies near the respective nucleon-nucleon thresholds.
Angular and momentum distributions have been measured for positrons from electron-positron pairs created in peripheral collisions of 6.4-TeV sulfur ions with fixed targets of Al, Pd, and Au. The data are compared with results of several theoretical treatments. Measured differential cross sections peak at low momentum (≤1 MeV/c), extend significantly to much higher momenta (>17 MeV/c), and concentrate sharply in the forward direction, along the ion-beam axis. Positron yields scale as the square of the target nuclear charge as predicted by theory.
We present a measurement of the ttbar production cross section in ppbar collisions at root(s) = 1.8TeV by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. The measurement is based on data from an integrated luminosity of approximately 125 pb~-1 accumulated during the 1992-1996 collider run. We observe 39 ttbar candidate events in the dilepton and lepton+jets decay channels with an expected background of 13.7+-2.2 events. For a top quark mass of 173.3GeV/c~2, we measure the ttbar production cross section to be 5.5+-1.8 pb.
Antiproton production cross-sections have been measured for p+C, C+C, C+Cu and C+Pb collisions at 3.65 GeV/nucleon.\(\bar p\) laboratory momentum and angle are 0.8 GeV/c and 24°. The target mass dependence parameter is found to be 0.43±0.1. A strong increase in antiproton yield is observed from p+C, d+C to C+C collisions. Projectile mass parameter is 1.2±0.2 for d+C to C+C. The construction and calibration of APAKI, an annihilation detector for\(\bar p\) identification, are also described.
We have measured energy-differential cross sections for π 0 production in 36 Ar+ 197 Au collisions at 95 MeV/u. From an analysis of spectral features due to pion final-state interactions we have estimated the cross section of the capture process Δ + N → N + N in the center-of-mass energy range s ≃2.05−2.25 GeV . Within the frame of BUU calculations, our results support the extension of the detailed-balance principle to broad-width resonances.
