Pi0 and pi+ Production with Polarized Photons in the Energy Range 1-GeV - 2-GeV

The asymmetry of π o and π + photoproduction from hydrogen has been measured. The π o -mesons were detected at 130° cms with E γ ranged from 0.9 to 1.65 GeV, and the π + -mesons at 40° cms with E γ ranged from 0.9 to 1.2 GeV. The results agree with model predictions of single pion photoproduction in the resonance region using fixed- t dispersion relations.

Inclusive and Semiinclusive Two Pion Correlations in p p Collisions at 69-GeV/c

Correlations between pions produced in pp collisions at 69 GeV/c are observed both for π−π+ and π−π−. Short-range correlations in rapidity are present fory1⋍y2 in both cases; an enhancement is seen aroundy1=y2=±1. Correlations between transverse variables are linked to those in rapidity for π−π− combinations, whereas the effect is essentially kinematical for π+π−.

Search for Parity Nonconservation in Atomic Bismuth

In a search for optical rotation near the 8755-Å magnetic-dipole absorption line in atomic Bi, our first results set an upper limit F<10−6 on a parity nonconserving amplitude associated with the line. This limit improves upon earlier parity tests in atoms by three orders of magnitude. Further improvement of at least another order of magnitude appears possible by this method which should then provide an exacting test of parity conservation in the neutral weak-current interaction in atoms.

Single Particle Inclusive Spectra of Charged Particles in anti-p p Interactions at 22.4-GeV/c

The inclusive spectra for p p collisions at 22.4 GeV/ c are investigated. We show that the transverse momentum distributions resemble those in high-energy pp interactions and discuss the influence of annihilation processes on the p T 2 distributions. The invariant inclusive cross section for pions in the central region is found to be 28 ± 1 mb. A charge asymmetry is indicated by the y ∗ spectrum in the central region, the asymmetry parameter having the value 0.15 ± 0.01. Finally, we estimate the upper limit of the diffraction dissociation of the beam particle to be 3.68 −0.15 +0.45 mb.

Upper limit on parity nonconserving optical rotation in atomic bismuth

We have searched for optical rotation near the 8757-Å magnetic-dipole absorption line in atomic bismuth vapor. The experiment is sensitive to parity nonconservation in the weak neutral-current interaction between electrons and nucleons in atoms. We find R≡Im(E1M1)=(−0.7±3.2)×10−8, which is considerably smaller than the value R=−2.5×10−7 obtained by central-field calculations for this bismuth line using the Weinberg-Salam theory of neutral currents.
