The differential cross section for π + p elastic scattering at 895, 945, 995 and 1040 MeV/ c has been measured in a hydrogen bubble chamber. The results are in good agreement with previous measurements using counter techniques except at extreme backward angles where significantly lower cross sections are obtained.

It is found in the reactions π ± p →( π ± π + π − )p, believed to be dominated by diffraction dissociation, that the d σ d t′ distributions show a “cross-over” effect at t ′ ≈ 0.15, similar to the effect observed in elastic scattering. This gives evidence for the interference of ( ϱ 0 , B 0 ,…)-exchanges with ( P , f 0 , …) -exchanges in pion diffraction dissociation reactions. No such evidence is found for baryon dissociation, π ± p → π ± (p π + π − ), at the same energy.

Measurements of complete angular distributions of elastic K + p scattering at closely spaced incident momenta from 1368 to 2259 MeV/ c are presented and discussed. A PDP-8 computer controlled system of scintillation counters and core-readout wire spark chambers was used for the detection of elastic events. Diffractive behaviour is already present at the lowest measured momentum and becomes more prominent as the incident momentum increases. An expansion of the angular distributions in terms of Legendre polynomials shows no marked structure of the expansion coefficients as functions of the incident momentum. Our measurements can be adequately described by a number of existing phase shift solutions within 5% of their published values. Also Regge pole extrapolations represent our data satisfactorily.

Cross sections for resonance production in the reactions π ± p → p π ± π + π − at 16 GeV/ c are determined by a maximum likelihood fit, making use of the measurements of all individual events. The reactions are described by a simple parametrization based on an incoherent superposition of amplitudes for quasi two-body and quasi three-body processes and a non-resonant backgroud. In this way the reflections are accounted for in a consistent way. Thus cross sections are obtained for Δ ++ , Δ 0 , ρ 0 and f 0 production which do not suffer from the uncertainties of background subtraction typical of the usual technique of fitting individual mass distributions.

Invariant single-particle cross sections for pion and proton production in π ± p interactions at 8 and 16 GeV/ c are presented in terms of integrated distributions as functions of x , reduced rapidity ζ and p ⊥ 2 , and also in terms of double differential cross sections E d 2 σ /(d x d p ⊥ 2 ) and d ζ d p ⊥ 2 ). A comparison of π ± and π − induced reactions is made and the energy dependence is discussed. It is shown that the single-particle structure function cannot be factorized in its dependece on transverse and longitudinal momentum. For the beam-unlike pion, there is an indication for factorizability in terms of rapidity and transverse momentum in a small central region.

Differential cross sections for π+p elastic scattering in the momentum region 1.2 to 2.3 GeV/c are presented for the center-of-mass angular range 0.9>cosθ>−0.9. Typically, 50 000 events were obtained at each of 16 momenta using magnetostrictive-readout wire spark chambers to detect the particles scattered from a liquid hydrogen target. The results are compared to those of the CERN-71 phase-shift analysis. The well-known dips at t≅−0.7 (GeV/c)2 and at u′=−0.2 (GeV/c)2 are observed. In addition, structure is seen at constant u′=−1.3 (GeV/c)2. The results of a pion attenuation study in iron are also presented.

We have searched the mass region 3.2 to 5.9 GeV for evidence of narrow resonances in e+e−→hadrons. We find no evidence for any such resonances other than the ψ(3695) in this region with a sensitivity ranging from about 12 to 45% of the integrated cross section of the ψ(3695). The more stringent bounds apply to resonances of a few MeV width, while the looser bounds apply to resonances of up to 20 MeV width.

We have observed an azimuthal asymmetry in inclusive hadron production by e+e− annihilation at the center-of-mass energy s=7.4 GeV. The asymmetry is caused by the polarization of the circulating beams in the storage ring and allows separate determination of the transverse and longitudinal structure functions. We have found events of the form e++e−→e±+μ∓+missingenergy, in which no other charged particles or photons are detected. Most of these events are detected at or above a center-of-mass energy of 4 GeV. We have measured the differential cross section for π−p→η0n at 6.0 GeV/c from 6730 very clean events in which the decay η→π+π−π0 was detected. The ratio of π+p to pp elastic scattering is found to be smoothly varying over the range −t=0.03 to 0.4 GeV2. It is well fitted by a single exponential, indicating the forward behavior must be quite similar for the two reactions.

A comparison of K±p and p±p elastic scattering is made for incident energy 50 to 175 GeV. Average values of 0.19±0.04 and 0.11±0.02 GeV2 were found for the invariant-momentum-transfer values of the Kp and pp crossover points, respectively.
KP AND PP CROSSOVER POINTS AT -T = 0.19 +- 0.04 AND 0.11 +- 0.02 GEV**2 (AVERAGE VALUES) RESPECTIVELY.
The differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of π+, π−, K+, K−, p, and p¯ on protons have been measured in the t interval -0.04 to -0.75 GeV2 at five momenta: 50, 70, 100, 140, and 175 GeV/c. The t distributions have been parametrized by the quadratic exponential form dσdt=Aexp(B|t|+C|t|2) and the energy dependence has been described in terms of a single-pole Regge model. The pp and K+p diffraction peaks are found to shrink with α′∼0.20 and ∼0.15 GeV−2, respectively. The p¯p diffraction peak is antishrinking while π±p and K−p are relatively energy-independent. Total elastic cross sections are calculated by integrating the differential cross sections. The rapid decline in σel observed at low energies has stopped and all six reactions approach relatively constant values of σel. The ratio of σelσtot approaches a constant value for all six reactions by 100 GeV, consistent with the predictions of the geometric-scaling hypothesis. This ratio is ∼0.18 for pp and p¯p, and ∼0.12-0.14 for π±p and K±p. A crossover is observed between K+p and K−p scattering at |t|∼0.19 GeV2, and between pp and p¯p at |t|∼0.11 GeV2. Inversion of the cross sections into impact-parameter space shows that protons are quite transparent to mesons even in head-on collisions. The probability for a meson to pass through a proton head-on without interaction inelastically is ∼20% while it is only ∼6% for an incident proton or antiproton. Finally, the results are compared with various quark-model predictions.

The inclusive production of antiprotons and Λ's in e+e− annihilation has been measured as a function of the c.m. energy in the range 3.7-7.6 GeV. We present results on the inclusive distributions of final-state hadrons created in deep-inelastic electron scattering from protons and deuterons. Data were taken from all portions of the kinematic range simultaneously in an apparatus which had equal detection efficiency for both charge signs. A subset of the produced hadrons were identified with a threshold-type Čerenkov counter. We find that the charge ratio h+h− is a strong function of Q2, xF, and pT2, with little dependence on s. The ratio of production of h− from deuterium to that from hydrogen as a function of φ is flat. The invariant cross section for each charge sign and each target exhibits the seagull effect (a correlation in 〈pT〉 and 〈xF〉). The value of 〈pT〉 for data in the range 0.4<xF<0.85 increases slightly as Q2 increases. The exponential dropoff in pT for production of protons and kaons is similar to that for pions. The dropoff in xF for production of pions shows a definite dependence on Q2, but this effect is largely caused by the decay products of the exclusive ρ0 final state. Finally, f(xF) for π+, π−, K+, K−, p, and p¯ is presented for each target type.
