Differential cross sections dσdΩ for the inclusive reaction N14 + p→Z + anything (for 3≤Z≤6) have been measured at six laboratory production angles (θ<5°) for 7.3 GeV nitrogen ions interacting in liquid hydrogen. The angular distributions for C, B, and Be fragments decrease sharply with increasing angle, as expected for this type of peripheral reaction. The corresponding transverse momentum (pt) distributions for these fragments can be represented by Gaussian functions of pt. The Li distribution appears to be non-Gaussian, suggesting one (or more) different production mechanisms. The dependence of the widths of the momentum distributions on fragment mass is not consistent with theoretical predictions, and shows some evidence for an "effective" number of nucleons which determine the fragmentation spectrum of the nitrogen nucleus. Integration of the angular distributions gives partial production cross sections which are consistent with results at higher energy. This energy-independent behavior implies that limiting fragmentation is applicable down to energies of 0.5 GeV/nucleon. NUCLEAR REACTIONS Relativistic heavy ions; fragmentation of 7.3 GeV nitrogen on protons.

DIFFERENTIAL CROSS-SECTIONS FOR RADIATIVE CAPTURE OF PIONS ON HYDROGEN IN THE DELTA (1232) REGION: A TEST OF THE ISOSPIN STRUCTURE AND T SYMMETRY OF HADRONIC ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERACTIONS

Tran, M.T. ; Guex, L.H. ; Alder, J.C. ; et al.
Nucl.Phys.A 324 (1979) 301-334, 1979.
Inspire Record 147550 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.37080

Radiation capture of π − on hydrogen has been measured in the momentum range from p π − = 210 MeV/ c to p π − = 385 MeV/ c and for c.m. angles between 30° and 120°, covering the Δ (1232) resonance. The unambiguous separation of the events from the charge exchange background is based on precise neutron time-of-flight measurements. Detector efficiencies were carefully determined in separate experiments. The experimental results are in good agreement with those of the inverse reaction and with most recent multipole analyses. An upper limit of ±2% can be set on the contribution of the isotensor term to the transition amplitude. A time reversal violating phase, when added to the resonant M 1+ 3 amplitude in the Donnachie-Shaw model, is found to be consistent with zero.

Cross-section values or upper limits are presented for twenty-five two-body hypercharge-exchange reactions in K − p and π + p interactions at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . The 16 GeV/ c results are compared with some predictions of line-reversal plus exchange-degenerate Regge poles, of SU(3) and of the additive quark model. Agreement is found in all cases.

We present results of a K − d bubble-chamber experiment at four K − momenta between 680 and 840 MeV/ c . The validity of the spectator model for the analysisof KN interactions in deuterium is discussed. Cross sections are determined for the reactions K − p → Σ − π + , K − p → Σ + π − and K − p → Λπ + π − and are compared to those obtain ed on free protons.

Experimental Studies of the Neutron and Proton Electromagnetic Structure Functions

We have carried out an experimental study of the neutron and proton deep-inelastic electromagnetic structure functions. The structure functions were extracted from electron-proton and electron-deuteron differential cross sections measured in three experiments spanning the angles 6°, 10°, 15°, 18°, 19°, 26°, and 34°. We report primarily on the large-angle (15°-34°) measurements. Neutron cross sections were extracted from the deuteron data using an impulse approximation. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that the nucleon is composed of pointlike constituents. The variation of the cross section with angle suggests that the hypothetical constituents have spin ½. The data for σnσp, the ratio of the neutron and proton differential cross sections, are in the range 0.25 to 1.0, and are within the limits imposed by the quark model. Detailed studies of the structure functions were made for a range of the scaling variable ω from ω=1.3 to ω=10.0, and for a range of invariant four-momentum transfer Q2 from 1.0 to 20.0 GeV2. These studies indicate that the structure functions approximately scale in the variable ω, although significant deviations from scaling in ω are apparent in the region 1.3<ω<3.3. These deviations from scaling are in the same direction and of similar magnitude for both neutron and proton. The interpretation of the data in terms of various theoretical models is discussed.

Spin and Parity Analysis of K anti-K pi System in the D and E/Iota Regions

We have performed a high-statistics experiment on the reaction π−p→K+K¯0π−n at 8.0 GeV/c. A Dalitz-plot analysis of the K+K¯0π− system finds that the D(1285) is a JPG=1++ state coupling predominantly to a δπ decay channel, while the E(1420) peak consists mostly of a JPG=0−+ wave with a substantial δπ decay mode. There is little evidence of a 1++ resonance at the E mass.

We have observed 217 (66) events of the process νp→νp (ν¯p→ν¯p) with an estimated background of 82 (28). The neutral-to-charged-current ratios are σ(νp→νp)σ(νn→μ−p)=0.11±0.02 and σ(ν¯p→ν¯p)σ(ν¯p→μ+n)=0.19±0.05 for 0.40<Q2<0.90 (GeV/c)2, where -Q2 is the square of the momentum transfer to the nucleon. These yield σ(ν¯p→ν¯p)σ(νp→νp)=0.53±0.17. The neutral-current form factors at Q2=0 are GE=0.5−0.5+0.25, GM=1.0−0.04+0.35, and gA=0.5−0.15+0.2.

PRODUCTION OF PHOTONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE PSI BY 217-GEV/C PI- MESONS

Dimuon production is studied in 217-GeV/c π−-hydrogen and π−-beryllium collisions with a lead-glass array to detect photons associated with the ψ. The ψ−γ mass spectrum shows a 2.6-standard-deviation excess of events above background at ∼3.5 GeV. This excess, if attributed to the decay χ(∼3.5)→ψγ, implies that 0.70±0.28 of the ψ's are produced via radiative decay of one of the χ states.
