Small angle proton proton elastic scattering at very high-energies (460-GeV**2 < s < 2900-GeV**2)

We have investigated the above processes at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR). Results show a marked change of the slope parameter b ( t , s ) = (d/d t ) ln (d σ /d t ) around − t ≈ 0.10 GeV 2 . The s − and t − dependence of b ( t , s ) have been observed over the interval 460 GeV 2 < s < 2900 GeV 2 and 0.02 GeV 2 < t < 0.40 GeV 2 .

Proton-proton elastic scattering has been measured over the angular range 7 to 16 mrad at centre-of-mass energies of 31, 45 and 53 GeV using the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. The results indicate that the diffraction peak has continued to shrink with increasing energy, but not as fast as suggested by the results at lower energies.

Anti-Proton-Proton Total Elastic Cross-Sections in the T and U Regions (0.69-GeV/c to 2.43-GeV/c)

Antiproton-proton total elastic cross sections at 21 incident momenta in the range 0.69 to 2.43 GeV/ c have been deduced by combining p̄p elastic differential cross sections over a c.m. angular range −0.95 ⩽ cos θ ∗ ⩽ 0.93 with forward elastic cross sections derived from recent real-part measurements and p̄p total cross sections. Two bumps are observed, at M 1 ⋍ 2.155 and M 2 ⋍ 2.345 GeV /c 2 , having widths of Г 1 ∼ 0.135 and Г 2 ∼ 0.135 GeV /c 2 . Corresponding structures in other p̄p reaction channels are discussed.

Anti-proton-nucleon scattering in deuterium below 1.0 gev/c

The p p and p n elastic differential cross sections have been extracted from the reaction p d→ p pn in which the deuteron breaks up. The incident antiproton momenta were 0.480, 0.735 and 0.940 GeV/ c , and the range of the momentum transfers was 0.04 < ∣ t ∣ < 0.7 (GeV/ c ) 2 . Both p p and p n differential cross sections are diffraction-like, with structure similar to the higher-momentum data.

MEASUREMENT OF THE P P ELASTIC SCATTERING SPIN PARAMETER C(LL) AT 11.75-GEV/C FOR THETA (C.M.) = 48-DEGREES - 90-DEGREES

Results are presented of a measurement of the proton-proton elastic-scattering spin parameter CLL=(L,L;0,0) at 11.75 GeV/c and θc.m.=48°−90°. The value of CLL is nearly constant and is approximately -0.16 in this angular region. This behavior is consistent with only one of the many models proposed describing the interaction via the hard scattering of two quarks.

Recent data are presented on spin-spin correlation parameters CLL=(L,L;0,0) and CSL=(S,L;0,0) at forward angles from 1.18 to 2.47 GeV/c incident momenta in proton-proton elastic scattering. Values for ΔσL (inelastic) are derived and are shown to disagree with predictions of theoretical models attempting to describe p−p scattering without dibaryon resonances. Finally, the CLL and CSL data discriminate among various phase-shift solutions, and will lead to a clarification of the p−p phase shifts.

Measurements of Triple and Double Spin Parameters in Elastic $p p$ Scattering at 6-{GeV}/$c$

Toward the goal of experimentally determining the p-p elastic-scattering amplitudes at 6 GeV/c, we have measured a number of triple- and double-spin correlation parameters over the ‖t‖ range between 0.2 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2. These new data permit the first nucleon-nucleon amplitude determination in the multi-GeV energy range. Polarized beams from the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron and polarized targets were utilized. The polarization of the recoil proton was measured with a carbon polarimeter. A total of 14 different spin observables were measured (five spin transfer, four depolarization, and five triple-spin correlation parameters). These have been combined with earlier results, resulting in a data set of typically 30 measurements of 20 different spin observables for each of six ‖t‖ values between 0.2 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2. A solution for the amplitudes has been found at each ‖t‖, and comparisons are presented with several different models. The spin-nonflip helicity amplitudes are found to be much larger than the spin-flip amplitudes.

Kaon production in pp reactions at a centre-of-mass energy of 540 GeV

Using the UA5 detector, the inclusive central production of Ks0 and K± mesons has been measured in non-single-diffractive interactions at the CERN SPS pp Collider at a c.m. energy of 540 GeV. The average transverse momentum is found to be 〈pT〉 = 0.57±0.03 GeV/c in the rapidity range |y|<2.5, which is an increase of about 30% over the top ISR energy. The K/π ratio has increased from about 8% at ISR energies to 9.5±0.9±0.7% (the last error is systematic) at 540 GeV. The average number of Ks0 per non-single-diffractive event is 1.1±0.1 and the inclusive inelastic cross section is estimated at 49±5 mb.
