Measurements of the cross section for exclusive virtual-photoproduction of rho^0 mesons from hydrogen are reported. The data were collected by the HERMES experiment using 27.5 GeV positrons incident on a hydrogen gas target in the HERA storage ring. The invariant mass W of the photon-nucleon system ranges from 4.0 to 6.0 GeV, while the negative squared four-momentum Q^2 of the virtual photon varies from 0.7 to 5.0 GeV^2. The present data together with most of the previous data at W > 4 GeV are well described by a model that infers the W-dependence of the cross section from the dependence on the Bjorken scaling variable x of the unpolarized structure function for deep-inelastic scattering. In addition, a model calculation based on Off-Forward Parton Distributions gives a fairly good account of the longitudinal component of the rho^0 production cross section for Q^2 > 2 GeV^2.

The Photoproduction of the b1 (1235) pi system

Blackett, G.R. ; Danyo, K. ; Handler, T. ; et al.
1997.
Inspire Record 447486 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.41646

We report on a study of the reaction, $\gamma p \to p \pi^+\pi^+\pi^-\pi^-\pi^0$, at an incident photon energy of 19.3 GeV. The most significant feature of this reaction is $\Delta^{++}$ production which occurs with a cross section of $0.6\pm 0.1 \mu$b. An upper limit is set for the cross section for the reaction, $\gamma p \to \Delta^{++}b_1^-(1235)$, and a search is made for resonances decaying to $b_1^\pm\pi^\mp$.

Inelastic rho0 photoproduction in the reaction gamma p ---> rho0 pi+ n

Phys.Rev.D 49 (1994) 2164-2168, 1994.
Inspire Record 377594 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.22550

Inelastic ρ0 photoproduction in the reaction γp→ρ0π+n is observed in the peripheral region |tγ,ρ0′|<0.12 GeV2. The data are consistent with the ρ0 production being due to a double peripheral mechanism which conserves s-channel helicity. The π+n produced in association with the ρ0 is also consistent with the same mechanism, although there is a distortion of the expected angular distributions in the π+n mass region of 1.3-1.5 GeV/c2.

Further results from charge exchange photoproduction

It is shown that the energy dependence of charge-exchange a2+ photoproduction (γp→na2+) agrees with a one-pion exchange mechanism. No evidence for the photoproduction of the a1+(1260) is observed. If the dynamics of a1 and a2 photoproduction are assumed to be the same, the absence of evidence for the a1 is shown to be consistent with either an extremely large a1 hadronic width or with an a1 of mass somewhat less than 1260 MeV.

This paper reports studies of the reactions γp→ρ π π πp and γp→ρ ρ πp. In particular a peak is reported in the ρ ρ π mass spectrum with closely similar mass and width to those of the ω ρ π peak previously reported in the reaction γp→ω ρ πp. The ratio of production cross sections is found to be ρ ρ π/ω ρ π=0.96±0.19, in serious disagreement with the expectation from Vector Meson Dominance. A possible explanation is indicated.

Charm Production in Deep Inelastic Muon - Iron Interactions at 200-{GeV}/$c$

Dimuon and trimuon events have been studied in deep inelastic muon scattering on an iron target at an incident muon energy of 200 GeV. The events are shown to originate mainly from charm production. Comparison of the measured cross sections with data taken at higher muon energies shows that charm production originates predominantly from transverse virtual photons. Within the framework of the photon gluon fusion model this indicates that the parity of the gluon is odd.

In diffractive photoproduction ofηπ+π−, the two-body substatesηρ0 andA2π are found to contribute significantly to the cross-section forηπ+π− masses below 2.4 GeV. From a spin-parity analysis the branching ratio, ρ′(1600)→ηρ/ρ′(1600)→, is determined to be <0.02 at the 68.3% confidence level. TheA2π component shows an enhancement around 1.7 GeV. The spin-parity analysis indicates a probable contribution to this signal from exclusive photoproduction of theg(1690).

EXCLUSIVE rho0 PRODUCTION IN DEEP INELASTIC MUON PROTON SCATTERING

Exclusive ϱ 0 production has been measured in 120, 200 and 280 GeV muon-proton interactions at high Q 2 (1 GeV 2 < Q 2 < 25 GeV 2 ) and W (6 GeV < W < 19 GeV). The photoproduction cross section decreases as 1/ Q 4 . A shallow t distribution, typical of a hard scattering process is observed and the ϱ 0 is found to be dominantly in the helicity zero spin state. The ϱ 0 s are mainly produced by transverse photons and s -channel helicity conservation seems to be invalid. The data cannot be described by the vector meson dominance model. These data show that at high Q 2 even exclusive ϱ 0 muoproduction is a hard scattering process and that the soft hadron-like properties of the photon have disappeared.

The photoproduction of the final state ω π+π−π0 has been studied as part of a survey of photoproduction in the energy range 20–70 GeV in the Omega spectrometer at CERN. The π+π−π0 system produced with the ω meson has a strongρ±π± component which is predominantlyI=1 andJπ=1+. For theωρ±π∓ state a spin-parity analysis favoursJπ=1−, and the mass spectrum peaks at 2.28±0.05 GeV. The fitted width is Γ=0.44±0.11 GeV. The photoproduction cross-section of theωρ±π∓ state, averaged over the energy range 25–60 GeV, is 150±50 nb.
