We report measurements of the two-photon processes e+e−→e+e−π+π− and e+e−→e+e−K+K−, at an e+e− center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV. In the π+π− data a high-statistics analysis of the f(1270) results in a γγ width Γ(γγ→f)=3.2±0.4 keV. The π+π− continuum below the f mass is well described by a QED Born approximation, whereas above the f mass it is consistent with a QCD-model calculation if a large contribution from the f is assumed. For the K+K− data we find agreement of the high-mass continuum with the QCD prediction; limits on f′(1520) and θ(1720) formation are presented.

We report on the first search with virtual photon-photon collisions for narrow, neutral resonances with even C parity in the mass range 4.5<W<19 GeV. The data were obtained via the process e+e−→e+e−γ*γ*→e e−+R with both the scattered e+ and e− detected. We find upper limits (95% confidence level) for the partial decay width of a resonance into two photons, ranging from 50 keV at W=4.5 GeV to 10 MeV at W=19 GeV. These limits constrain theoretical models involving neutral composite bosons.

We have measured the inclusive prompt electron cross section over a wide momentum range (P>0.5 GeV/c) with the PEP-4 TPC detector. The semielectronic branching fractions of thec andb quarks are (9.1±0.9 (stat.)±1.3 (syst.))% and (11.0±1.8±1.0)%, respectively. Theb quark fragmentation function peaks at highz with 〈zb〉=0.74±0.05±0.03. The axial couplings to the neutral current areac=2.3±1.4±1.0 for thec quark andab=−2.0±1.9±0.5 for theb quark.

The cross section of the reaction e + e − → π + π − has been measured in the energy range 2 E from 0.78 up to 1.34 GeV. The obtained experimental values of the pion form factor exceed notably the ρ -meson tail.

We report the results of a pion-electron scattering experiment to measure the charge radius of the pion. The experiment was performed in a 50 GeV/ c negative, unseparated beam at the IHEP accelerator, Serpukhov, and has been briefly reported in an earlier publication [1]. A magnetic spectrometer instrumented with wire spark chambers was used to record the incident pion trajectory and the angles and momenta of the scattered particles. Events are reconstructed by detailed trackfinding programs, and a set of kinematic and geometric cuts define the elastic sample. Electrons are identified both by kinematic criteria and pulse height information from total absorption lead glass Čerenkov counters. The final elastic sample consisted of 40 000 πe events in the region of four-momentum transfer squared 0.013 (GeV/ c ) 2 ⩽ q 2 ⩽ 0.036 (GeV/ c ) 2 . A full error matrix fit to the form factors of the pion gave the r.m.s. charge radius of the pion: 〈r π 2 〉 1 2 = (0.78 −0.10 +0.09 ) fm .

A large solid angle detector has been used to observe π + π − π 0 events produced, at the ω energy, by electron-positron collisions in the ORSAY storage ring. From the ω excitation curve we have deduced: σ ( e + e − → ω 3 π ) = (180 ± 0.20) μ b, Γ = (9.1 ± 0.8) MeV and with B( ω → π + π − π 0 ) = 0.898 ± 0.045 we have calculated Γ e + e − = (0.76 ± 0. 08) keV and g 2 ω 4π = 18.4 ± 1.8 .

FITTED CROSS SECTION AT OMEGA PEAK, RADIATIVELY CORRECTED.
Data were taken at the energy 2 E = 990 MeV to search for multibody events, with the same large solid angle detector which has been used for the measurement of the ϱ , ω and φ production by e + e − annilations. Assuming a π + π − π 0 π 0 production by the quasi two-body process e + e − → ϱ → ωπ 0 we give the correspondi ng cross section σ (e + e − → π + π − π 0 π 0 ) = (1.1 ± 0.5) 10 −32 cm 2 . Since no events with 3 and 4 charged pions have been observed σ (e + e − → π + π − π 0 π − ) ⩽ 1.5 × 10 −33 cm 2 .

A large solid angle detector has been used to observe two body events produced by electron-positron collisions in the Orsay storage ring.
